Fun fact about Silent Hill. The game originally never had fog in it but the developers got feed back from testers about the buildings and other structures not loading fast enough while walking around. So in turn they added the Fog to compensate for the slow loading but they never thought it would make this game much scarier.
NissanHyoryuLyfe wow! Never knew this mate! Thanks for sharing!
Fog definitely made it hella scarier!! Hearing things on that radio but not seeing where they came from! Damn that game shit the life outta me!
Yeah and many developers adapt to this kind of thing.
Yes. And now we couldn’t imagine a silent hill game without the fog. Funny how some things work out
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.
Silent Hill is NOTHING without fog
idk what's scarier, the game itself or the fact that this guy doesn't save every chance he gets
Right? Quite ballsy.
both are equally terrifying
Maybe he's using a PSX emulator on his PC, and he auto-save often with his keyboard ? I hope he does.
I think they do use auto-save, though the game is not so hard you need to save every chance you got.
Might of beaten this games enough to a point he doesn't need to save.
I like how he fights a giant lizard monster and is unphased, but then is shocked by there being a boiler room.
"A wheelchair? In an elementary school?" Harry has never heard of disabled kids either.
tbf boiler rooms are the most horrifying rooms in any art medium
Harry seems to be always bewildered by the most normal stuff but is completely okay with the fact there is demons chasing after him and crucifixon happening around the city.
He has those priorities straight
oh, the 90s.. when handgun bullets was just lying around in public schools
Whats changed?
Nice foreshadowing

This player knows the game better than the back of his own hand. It's so graceful to watch. And it's actually visually beautiful
I like how you're playing this game for us, I can tell you've played it before enough to be familiar with everything, and the way you manipulate the character to kind of react to certain things in the world really adds an immersive experience to this playthrough. Very movie like, great work man honestly
Its fleshed out more in the second game but the game essentially requires you to roleplay as the main character in order to get different endings. Its just a fantastic series
for real! he knew what would happen and made sure to react for it. amazing work
Can we all agree that he is WAY TOO calm about losing his kid? I would be freaking TF out!
90s voice acting, games had super low budgets compared to nowadays.
Guess ppl had different voice acting standards for video games back then.
Adam Yes and no, knowing how good were metal gear solid’s legendary actors like David Hayter.
Ceti Jovic Well his performance in the first MGS wasn't great, he became legendary for MGS2 and especially 3
Adam yeah you’re right, by today’s standards it wasn’t that great, but it was decent for the time in my opinion. And there were some really great acted moments like sniper wolf’s death scene
I remember this game becoming rare pretty quickly... at least until the greatest hits version was released. I rented it from blockbuster in 99, I was was 12 years old. I loved the game so had to save up $40 to buy it from doing chores. By the time I got the money I couldn't find the game anywhere in town. I started calling every game shop in my state until I found one obscure anime shop that had the game and was a 2 hour drive from my house. My dad was nice enough to drive me that far for a video game and that drive has always been a cherished memory. It was foggy that day as I drove with my dad to get silent hill 🙂
The Game is now hard to find for anything under 200 bucks, in fact a factory sealed copy could sell for a couple thousand
No way!! What a cool memory🥲
Thanks for sharing such an heartfelt memory in here ! 😊
I don't understand why the F Sony doesn't simply put all these games on PS store.
It was foggy, you say? How ironic 😏
😉
I’m not sure why, but the animation of the dog monsters jumping to attack makes me laugh. It’s so graceful and smooth.
That inherent PS1 jank sure was special 😂 it definitely gave older games some charm when you look back on them. So many good games from back then though, even if they are pretty dated
Great memories, I remember me and all my brothers watching my dad play this game and he was stuck on the clock part for months.. I went to school (elementary school at the time) and printed out a walk through (accidentally) printing out over 1,000 pages and used up all the ink in every printer in the school, just for the walk through to be in Portuguese 😂. That was the highlight of my childhood lmao! Tysm for uploading every silent hill, these videos are bringing me comfort during this pandemic.
lmao thats jokes XD
This is one of the greatest comments I've ever seen 😂
Sons witness father struggle on game.
Print guide to help, waste 1,000 paper.
Emptied ink for school.
Guide turns out to be Portuguese
(a language not understandable)
Lololol
Awesome story! I loled at the part being in Portuguese.
@@guanjun1178 You did not understand. The guy who wrote the comment is Brazilian (just like me and we speak Portuguese) and his father didn't know what to do. In Brazil there were magazines showing what to do from beginning to end of the games (in a pre-internet era accessible here). He must have taken a copy of one of these magazines with the game step by step. The 1000 copies part he added to make the comment funny since I doubt the school's printers were connected to each other.
the pocket radio is such an iconic element of this game. walking through the fog and just hearing the noise coming up, not knowing how close the nearest monster is... gives me the chills.
I love how his first reaction to being pinned by a monster is to check the map
I wonder how the monster feels about that
Apparently he’s Dora lol

I was about to watch some Netflix, but then the thought of Silent Hill randomly popped up in my head. I love watching playthroughs anyway, so hear I am. This was so scary when I was a kid. I can't believe I use to play it. I'm now 33 years old. Good times! I've beaten all these and the Resident Evils (not the last 2 Resident Evils though).
I have never played this game but I must say these old graphics are scarier than any contemporary horror game

Some indie devs like Puppet Combo and Chilla's Art are trying to recreate games like this now, with old looking graphics like this, they know what's up, their games are pretty great
If you like low quality horror games check out faith unholy trinity ❤
why are his footsteps so obnoxiously loud but also satisfying?

Silent Hill was the first memory I have about ASMR. For me footsteps in old video games always were so nice to listen to. I very distinctly remember the footsteps from Tommy Angelo in Mafia City of Lost Heaven and Harrys from SH.
ASMR
When he walks over the metal..
Thanks god I'm not the only one
I love how Harry's reaction to seeing the strung up bloody corpse is more "hmm I think someone needs to be written up for a health code violation" and less "OH SWEET JESUS FUCK"
For me, this game is still the benchmark horror genre. Still scares his silence ..
Nobodys done it better! This game scared the shit out of me when i bought it when it came out, but i couldn't put it down.
Truly *the* legendary horror game, move over Resident evil
@@Adam-cj2jg fact!
Prolly set the benchmark for a lot of people's nightmares for a while there too.
I was gonna start the HD collection, although I remember how disappointed I was playing 2&3.
I've just watched a couple of reviews , they were basically negative, so I decided not to play it the HD collection.
But this original is just freakin awesome, a masterpiece, I'm literally furious why developers can't realise how a humble, simply upgraded remake of this legend would set up a barrier for the 2nd time in gaming history 😁
Probably that's the reason at the same time, I'm dare to say a Silent Hill 1 remake with graphic enchantment only would expose the whole gaming industry for the current gamer generation.
What device did you play it on?
Still one of the scariest games ever, graced with a soundtrack that's just utter insanity.
Back then Silent Hill 1 made Resident Evil feel like a peaceful walk in Disneyland.
An absolute milestone in the horror genre.
Sadly I didn't stress half of that I did with re1(and I said sadly cause when I first played this game I had high expectations),RE caused you paranoia through the whole game and the enemies werent as easy to handle unlike silent hill where the gun itself destroys most of them and melee is even a viable option for most. I'll give silent hill the acting point tho.
The original RE was a much harder game I think, but SH was infinitely scarier.
RE: you get machine guns, shotguns, grenade launchers and bazookas.
SH: you get a crowbar, a kitchen knife, a single gun and a shotgun with scarce amo

We need a current gen Silent Hill. Still mad the Kojima’s Silent Hill’s didn’t work out.
Fucking Konami kicked Kojima so we have a one chance
Death Stranding
To be fair, I'm pretty sure a Kojima made SH would turn out less 2 and more 4.
Kojima is a hack
sadly, I don't think even Kojima wants a return for the series. He said that he wants to work on another horror game that isn't Silent Hills... this dude got more ideas than anyone can afford

When i first played the demo i thought it was made by some sort of sick cult
@Gabriel Barnada You just haunted by the power of Silent Hill.
16 times for me. Love SH1.
I could not play this game at night or with the lights truned off i dont care what anybody says my brother could not be in the room while i was playing as well i maybe finished this game 2 times and not to mention the puzzles are freakn hard and the riddles back when it was hard without any cheats or too much info swirling around lol good memories though
You know what I like about this Silent Hill game? You are no longer afraid of the creature in the beginning because you've faced worst. Your brain create a defense mechanism on its own to face what's more upcoming. And at this point, you are using all your sense quite well. You are focusing on your hearing, sight and your surrounding. Making you more alarm. Solving puzzles and connecting all the dots while enjoying the story plots is an extra. Kudos to the creators of this game. You did a great job.
20 years on and I'm still amazed at how well constructed the whole opening section is. The way the game guides you with the sound of distant footsteps or glimpse of something shrouded in the mist, or the way your are subtly introduced to gameplay mechanics such as the radio static near monsters... it really has an amazing cinematic quality that shines through the aging graphics. This and metal gear solid ushered a new era of story telling in video games and you can really appreciate this with these slow paced / no commentary playthroughs
Imagine SH get a remake like RE2...
Yeah, eff you Konami.
It will be a pachinco game
This game is fucked...it actually hurts.
that will be amazing news but sielnt hill didn't even get a sepule so it will be a long time before we see a remake
Silent Hill: Detroit Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry Series
If they did than this game would smash RE2 remake like hell :) I'm a RE fan from the beginning but also a SH fan from the beginning...that's why I dare to say that a remake of SH1 would be the ultimate survival horror game!
This game still sends chills down my spine. And I’m 41 years old

This game isn’t scary at all, idk how anyone could ever think it was.
As much as i would love a remaster of this i think the old graphics give the game it's charm, even the monsters are more creepy as you can barely make out what they are, leaves a lot to the imagination.
Honestly I think so too. I like the game as it is 😋
The remake/remaster doesn't need unreal engine, just refine the bad stuff and maybe do it by hand or something? Otherwise this is still a great game.

Fact! Ageed 100%
Silent hill 2 is a little bit better.
id say its the best horror game series, but the best game from the franchise gotta be silent hill 2, followed by the first.
AMEN to that
There’s a reason Silent Hill is in a whole different realm of horror compared to other popular games like resident evil.
Not only does it not rely on cheap, generic jump-scares with the same tired, overused enemy types like zombies - but rather it warns you ahead of time that there’s something scary ahead with the master class use of the static from the radio. It almost feels cocky and boastful in a way, as in “not only did we make the most viscerally horrifying game of all time, but we did it while warning you of the approaching horror before you even see it.”
It feels very counterintuitive for a horror game, but it turns the normal jump-scare, which creates only about a second of actual fear in the player, into a dreadful, agonizing march towards something horrifying. It isn’t fear caused by something that you didn’t expect suddenly appearing before you. Its fear caused by knowing that something terrifying is somewhere ahead of you, and it’s up to you to willingly walk towards it.
Resident evil is quickly ripping off the Band-Aid, Silent Hill is pulling the Band-Aid off as slowly as possible.
Because Resident Evil always was a Sci-Fi. Not supernatural shit. But the "fans" don't realize that and kept asking them for more horror and less action resulting on that lastest games that are GARBAGE.
It's like Stephen King's distinction between horror and terror, the latter is the one you described of the sense of dread that something terrifying is approaching and that's the feeling that horror writers always strive to induce, i think silent hill is the master and father of horror games in that sense.
@@badbot223 What do you mean, resident evil 7 was great.

I have played the 2nd and 3rd Silent Hill games myself and Silent Hill 3 is one of my top 10 favorite video games. Up until this point, there had never been anything like Silent Hill.
A classic.
And dare i say it? Never has been one since
That beginning was such a masterpiece of horror.
I’m 30 years old, love horror movies, know nothing about Silent Hill, and played this game for the first time recently.
Thinking about that opening sequence and the school section kept me awake all night. It was partly me being genuinely spooked by the content and partly my mind racing in amazement at just how effectively terrifying playing Silent Hill still is in 2023.
The experience of playing is infinitely more terrifying than even the best horror movie. Hats off to Team Silent for creating a masterpiece.
that The Shining reference tho 1:15:00
That and "bauchman road", bc Stephen King also released some books under the pseudonym Richard Bauchman
What a masterpiece! The sound direction, the atmosphere...so incredible. Thank you so much for this, and here’s hoping you do the whole series!
The soundtrack always reminds me of winters in Seattle. Always cloudy, always raining pretty much. It was perfect when you were struggling to wake up and go to work. Also riding the bus helped bring the silent hill vibes.
I live in Seattle and completely agree. I like listening to the soundtrack of various Silent Hill games when walking outside on a rainy day.
I played this series in my youth and adored it. It still holds up and is long overdue for a remake. Also the cop giving detailed instructions on safe gun handling was a nice way to make it feel real. This is my 2nd favorite game franchise ever.
Cybil and Harry after they escaped: 👁👄 👁 👁 👄👁
1:29:13 begins the best build up to a horror scene in the history of gaming.
When I was a kid what made me more anxious wasn't the monsters but walking alone into the darkness and that sense of desolation. Due to this game I had hundreds of nightmares related to that feeling of being in the middle of the darkness in a completely abandoned place, to this day every now and then I still have nightmares and feel that anxiety. Silent Hill made me feel that anxiety for the darkness the same exact way Jaws made a lot of people feel anxiety for the ocean

To this day I haven't played a horror game with this much atmosphere. The music and even the outdated graphics all worked together to provide an experience that was unmatched. If a remake is ever done I hope it lives up to the psychological horror masterpiece that was SH1.
You're awesome (which I have said before) but anyway you're one of my favorite UA-camrs and you've never said a word lol. How I came across it one day years ago was that I typed in no commentary because so many UA-camrs just constantly talk and talk ok during gameplay I can handle but when you talk through cut scenes that's when I draw the line. I don't mind a little feed back every once in a while but some people just take it to the extreme and about nothing. With that being said thanks for the good work.
i got this masterpiece for my 11th Birthday, it scared the shit out of me, especially at the end of the game when the face of the nurse lisa was covered in blood.
Imagine getting this game when you're 7 years old. You would think your PlayStation is cursed and the game is going to kill you.
Thanks for the upload. I can't help but express disappointment in the fact that this entire video is plagued by an emulator bug that is causing the background music to play extremely fast. It's a nitpick, but it might actually affect how some people perceive this game if it's their first exposure to it. For me, it takes me out of the immersion completely, but that's just my reaction. For the record I really like this channel.
I'm so confused, the entire run was going great like you knew where everything was and you knew where to go. As soon as you got to the amusement park it's like someone else took over because you ran around in circles for ages
I honestly think the voice acting is the scariest part.
Hahahah
it's the nineties, man. i think the "bad" voice acting adds to the uncanny feel of the whole game personally
