  • This piece is called "Dancing Song of the Yao Tribe" and is the first track on the CD "Masterpieces of Chinese Traditional Chinese Music (Chinese Instrumental Ensemble)". The CD is still "in-print" and I recommend it highly. Simply a fantastic recording produced by Wang Sheng Di. The recording features Chen Jiebing on Erhu. I do not own any of the content of this video.

My parents got me this CD as a child. I was a little white boy obsessed with ancient China. My parents were Christian, but they understood that wisdom has many sources. My dad even took me to a Buddhist temple when I was 12, because I was considering converting and he wanted to support me!
It always saddened me growing up in a predominantly white suburb in Australia when other kids and even adults were racist against the Chinese population. Through museums, books and music, I was exposed to their cultural roots from a young age and just could never understand why people never saw the beauty of China. Now, all grown up as a cultural historian, this song brought me right back to that place of wide-eyed wonder and innocence. Sure, maybe I romanticised the culture a bit when I was a kid. But I maintain that it never hurts to incorporate other cultures into your life, as long as you do it in a respectful way and take time to understand it.
Encourage kids to learn about histories and cultures that are not their own! That's my PSA to all parents and teachers (particularly of white western children).

    Many nights we prayed
With no proof, anyone could hear
In our hearts a hopeful song
    We barely understood

      Now we are not afraid
Although we know there's much to fear
      We were moving mountains
Long before we knew we could

Been around the world, only missing Japan, New Zealand and Australia.I must say however China is a beautiful country rich with history culture and an ever growing society ready to embrace change, this music describes how life there works, slow and peaceful yet fast and diverse. If anyone takes their time to read this it is the best place you can visit. Sorry for going on but thanks for reading :)

It is not your imagination. The first 18 notes from 'when you believe' are borrowed from the Dance of Yao People.. Actually the melody is based on a folk song of Yao people dates back to thousands years old.

@thojmoto69 This is a traditional Chinese piece that has been covered by many artists. The version that I posted is from 1994 recording sessions. The Oliver Shanti version is from 1999 and is a shorter version at 2:05 minutes. Good catch and thanks for the post. cheers!

Many "Shanti" songs are just tracks copied from other CD´s. Specially B&B #1 and #2.
Get a greater feeling with "Zhang Fu-Quan" or "Yang Xiu-lan & Ouyang Qian".
And yes, my entrance to asia musik was about OS too.

Sorry dude, if it's about culture, asians definitely have more traditional culture than westerner, China has 50 ethnic with different culture, language, music, etc, so we have more variety. But I love European culture, I've been several times to EU and US, and I love EU. I enjoy my time in Scotland last year and Ireland, their traditional music and dance is fun, UK and Holland also has lots of old buildings, I love that style. In US only Indian culture I like, sorry if you're from US ;p
