Amazing that a sensory experience once only available to the wealthy class in China can now be shared and loved by almost everyone in the world. I worry sometimes that we treat music as cheap and disposable because it is so freely available, when it still takes passion and mastery to create.

thepeacefish I like your comment it stirs up curiousity in me and gratitude. I saw these instruments being played in movies like Kung fu hustle and red cliff which i found to be fascinating on how they where used in a deep reflective and emotional expression, which transports you into another time and culture.

@@brendancwc6188 the koto is an instrument that is derived from the Guzheng. The various chinese cultures had a massive impact on the entire south-east asian sphere so many instruments, foods, weapons and customs can be traced back to there.
Apart from the sound, you can usually tell by the number of strings. While 21 string Kotos exist, a regular Koto will usually only have 13 or 17 strings while modern Guzheng start at 21 strings upward.
Apart from that, speaking music alone, the melody is very chinese.

A SPRING EVENING, ACCOMPANIED BY THE RIVER, THE FLOWERS, THE MOON
Originally by 【Tang Dynasty】 Zhāng Ruòxū
    Translation by MIRANDAJHJ2022
The spring river rises and falls, blending in with the ocean
A bright moon peaks out, surging with the waves
Waves shimmer under the moonlight, stretching into the distance
The moon and the spring river accompany each other
The river wraps around the vegetation filled plains, flowing
Flowering bushes refract the gentle moonlight, covering every surface
The real fog is hidden by the fog of light, blending into one
The white, fine sand on the beach melts into the moonlight, seamless
The sky and the water become one shade, not a grain of disturbance
It is lonely, yet the moon hangs in the sky, brightly shining
Who was the first to see the moon by the river?
When did the moon above the river first shine upon us?
Generations of people come and go, never-ending. Yet
The moon shines brightly each year, like it always has
We do not know who the moon is waiting for
We can see the flowing river, sending water far away
Like parting clouds, young travellers disappear over the horizon
They leave behind only the sorrow of women waiting for their return
Which traveller is leaving by boat today, floating into the distance?
In which room is she, the one who is thinking about him?
I pity the shifting and ever-present moon, like the sorrow of those waiting
Shine upon their desks, the moon should, take away their sorrow
The sorrow, it refuses to leave their curtains
The sorrow, it refuses to leave their clothing boards
We are both watching the moon, but I cannot hear your voice
I wish to follow the moon so I can shine on you as well
The wild geese fly non-stop, but they will never leave the moonlight
The fish and the dragons jump out of the water every now and then, leaving ripples
Last night, flower petals kissed the surface of pond water in my dreams
How unfortunate that spring is already half gone, yet I cannot return home
The river flows on, with it goes the remainder of spring
Above the river, the moon is descending westward again
The tilted moon slowly descends, hiding behind the mist
There is a long distance to go, seemingly endless
We don’t know how many people can return before the moonlight runs out
Only the moon rocks with longing, lighting the forests by the river

A Moonlit Night On The Spring River by Zhang Ruoxu
In spring the river rises as high as the sea,
And with the river's rise the moon uprises bright.
She follows the rolling waves for ten thousand li,
And where the river flows, there overflows her light.
The river winds around the fragrant islet where
The blooming flowers in her light all look like snow.
You cannot tell her beams from hoar frost in the air,
Nor from white sand upon Farewell Beach below.
    汀上白沙看不见。
    No dust has stained the water blending with the skies;
    江天一色无纤尘,
A lonely wheel like moon shines brilliant far and wide.
Who by the riverside first saw the moon arise?
When did the moon first see a man by riverside?
    江月何年初照人?
    Ah, generations have come and pasted away;
    人生代代无穷已,
From year to year the moons look alike, old and new.
We do not know tonight for whom she sheds her ray,
But hear the river say to its water adieu.
    但见长江送流水。
    Away, away is sailing a single cloud white;
    白云一片去悠悠,
On Farewell Beach pine away maples green.
Where is the wanderer sailing his boat tonight?
Who, pining away, on the moonlit rails would learn?
    何处相思明月楼?
    Alas! The moon is lingering over the tower;
    可怜楼上月徘徊,
It should have seen the dressing table of the fair.
    应照离人妆镜台。
    She rolls the curtain up and light comes in her bower;
    玉户帘中卷不去,
She washes but can't wash away the moonbeams there.
    捣衣砧上拂还来。
    She sees the moon, but her beloved is out of sight;
    此时相望不相闻,
She'd follow it to shine on her beloved one's face.
But message-bearing swans can't fly out of moonlight,
Nor can letter-sending fish leap out of their place.
Last night he dreamed that falling flowers would not stay.
Alas! He can't go home, although half spring has gone.
    可怜春半不还家。
    The running water bearing spring will pass away;
    江水流春去欲尽,
The moon declining over the pool will sink anon.
    江潭落月复西斜。
    The moon declining sinks into a heavy mist;
    斜月沉沉藏海雾,
It's a long way between southern rivers and eastern seas.
How many can go home by moonlight who are missed?
The sinking moon sheds yearning o'er riverside trees.

      K Ryu
The culture is different even in different parts of Britain.
I've had cat in China; civet cat at least, which is an animal with cat in its name. Tigers are occasionally in the news for appearing on the menu in China too, so it's a little misleading to say no Chinese eat cats.
Dogs are eaten far beyond Guangdong too. I've had dog dishes in both Nanning and Liuzhou cities in Guangxi province and have seen it available in Sichuan and Yunnan too.
Guangdong even had a bit of a human baby eating problem at one point just a few years ago, if we must make a list.
Many insects are excellent food. They're just a subset of arthropods, which also includes shrimps among other things. I've only had them pickled in high strength spirits though in China. These are quite commonly available, so insects *are* much more routinely consumed in China than you imply.
You're right about the variety of food. Guangxi province alone has more dishes than I could try in a life time. Even Nanning city alone probably does.

When I was 14 I swam the length of the San Marcos river in Texas early in the morning. I happened upon largemouth bass, lots of turtles, and randomly deer drinking water. The first breath of the river the ripples of the current were moderate and at some places I passed tons of duckweed and floated at the top to keep from getting tangled. Then there were beavers slapping their tails to alert my presence. I saw egrets flying overhead. Below some snakes. The ripples of the water was music to my ears. I passed by fishermen in their boats as I swam against the current. I waved to one because he was my uncle. He knew I was supposed to be at school but kept quiet and softly said hi, (so as not to disturb the fish). Not too much further down the gators we’re sleeping under the second overpass. Then I came to the dark waters of the whirlpools. I stayed clear of the embankments so as not to be drawn in. More egrets looking at me. This is where you cannot see the water below and the chill of dead souls lingers as though something bad happened there long ago that only the river remembers. I walk out the shallow water under the third overpass. another uncle is netting crawdads for bait. He says, girl your supposed to be in school. I dig into my shirt and a couple of small fish are stuck in there and throw them into his bucket. I hope you catch something I say as I walk up the embankment past the waterfall and swim to the other side. Lovers are staring at the water as college boys swing off of a rope and summersault into the river. I pass the concrete bridge to the little island and dive in and catch a baby turtle the size of a small potato. The sun filters through the water. In the oxygen bubbles and the coolness of the water against the warmth of the sun I am happy.
Thank you sincerely for the beautiful music that helps me remember all those moments.

it's made under the 12356 pentatonic scale law, like most of Chinese traditional instruments. Every string is fixed in a certain pitch of note, you pull the string with your right hand to make it sound, and to the left of the saddles press the string with your left hand in case you need vibrato or a note out of the pentatonic scale, e.g., 4, 7, etc. So generally speaking it's easy to play in comparison with many other instruments.

      Translation:
      Spring Moonlight Night
      Zhang Ruoxu
The spring tide is accompanied by the sea level, and the tide is on the sea.
With the wave thousands of miles, where no spring moon!
      The river flow turns around Fangdian, and the moonlight forests all look like a ripple;
The dripping cream wasn't felt flying, and Ting's white sand was invisible.
Jiang Tian's color is not dusty.
Who sees the moon on the river? Jiang Yuehe shines at people at the beginning of the year?
Life has been infinite for generations, and Jiang Yue looks similar in the years to come.
I do not know who Jiangyue will be, but see the Yangtze River to send water.
The white clouds will go long and the green maple will be overwhelming.
Whose boat is tonight? Where is Acacia Moon Tower?
Poor upstairs on the moon, should leave the makeup mirror.
The Yuhu curtain won't go through and the anvil on the anvil will come back.
At this time, they did not hear each other and would like to visit each other on a monthly basis.
The geese fly in long distances, and the dragon dive leaps into the water.
Last night, the dream of idling in the lake fell, and the poor spring half did not return home.
The river flows to the end of spring, and Jiangtan falls to the west.
Oblique moon heavy sea fog, Yanshi Xiangxiang Infinity Road.
I do not know how many months to return home, falling moon rock full of trees.

do not apologize for background noise. thats what makes the recording exceptional. anyone can listen to sound snuffed guzheng. it's not complete until cars drive by or whatever else is going on in the background. remember they have frequency and vibration as well. give them the justice they deserve.

I play traditional germanic instruments (tagelharpas and kravik lyres) however the beauty of traditional chinese instruments is enough to move me to tears. I will never touch one of these instruments out of respect for the culture and the poetry it embodies. This music is deeply tied to time and place. However, I, like many others, can recognise beauty when I see and hear it. Be proud of your heritage and express yourselves fully. 🙌

The strings of this instrument tug at one's soul. Freeing whatever tears are lodged within the Rocky crevasses of one's heart. This instrument brings one to a garden of refreshing lotus flowers and gentle river blabbering, or a breeze blown foresr, gently swaying almost dancing in the wind. This is truly inspiring and calming music. Thank you.

    • @hansmahr8627

There is no language that can express more than others, all languages are equally expressive. Some have a long literary tradition and a classical language like Chinese, Arabic or Greek, others have only been attested for 200 years or so (like Lithuanian) but that doesn't make them less expressive. It also doesn't depend on the number of words.
The 12 million number is ridiculous anyway, this myth is based on an article by a guy who tried to calculate all the possible roots in Arabic, i.e. it includes a large amount of roots that don't exist. If you look at the number of words in Arabic dictionaries, you'd get a more reasonable number of 200.000 words. But counting the words of a language is not as straightforward as it seems: do you count earlier forms of the language (Old and Middle English for example) or just the modern form? Do you count rare words that are only attested once or twice? Do you include all the different dialects? Basically, it's impossible to come to an objective answer. And in the end, it doesn't even matter because no one uses or knows all of those words anyway. Even Shakespeare, who made use of an unusually large vocabulary in his works only used 30.000 words. And they were more than enough to express the depths of human psychology.

Maybe it's because the ancestors of the ones who made these combinations got those sounds from natural sounds for example what water sounds like and what other things from nature sounds like. These combinations are oftentimes passed on from the ancient times. Some are more based on nature then emotions. But some others are more massed on emotion then nature. I guess this balances out some things.
