  • Just another average day in my life. We headed out to recover a stuck 5 ton with another 5 ton wrecker recovery truck. The recovery went suspiciously easy until BOOM...the wrecker sinks! This is real, raw, and unscripted content documenting what actually happens to us on a regular basis.

After 1000's of recoveries I can say with confidence that those kinetic snatch ropes/straps are by far the most effective way to recover in a situation like that. As long as the recovery vehicle can build up some speed and the stuck vehicle isn't on the verge of falling off a cliff or something, those snatch ropes almost always work the best.
They even work great with light recovery vehicles pulling out heavy ones. I've used my 1-ton 7,500lb Chevy square body to pull out a 75,000 lb loaded 18-wheeler and the whole tractor was down to its axles in mud. To make matters worse my truck was on wet, sheer ice and I didn't have my chains on. To get the 18 wheeler out I backed right up to it and accelerated all the way at the verge of spinning (with axles& center locked, Detroit's front&rear). The guy driving the 18 wheeler said it felt like that was the fastest acceleration that 18 wheeler had ever experienced when that 80,000 lb rated bungy tightened up and finally got him out. The scary part for me was I would get up to about 40 mph, smoothly go from that to zero over about 4 feet (as there bungee tightened) and then be sprung backwards at what felt like 40 mph back towards the 18 wheeler. The first few pulls didn't get him all the way out and I feared I was going to spring back all the way into him. Pull #3 got him all the way out of the mud and back up on the road.
The recovery shown here you could have left the Subaru on the bed and pulled the 5-ton out using a 1-ton pickup with a good kinetic recovery strap.
I find as long as the recovery vehicle can get up enough speed that you can pull out something that weighs about 10x the recovery vehicle using an appropriately sized kinetic strap.
Using a winch on the other hand you need to tie the recovery vehicle to a tree or something for anything even close to the same weight.

I found this story quite by accident but....I do a LOT of photography out on the island and I have seen these vehicles in the quagmire next to the causeway several times and even stopped to take a few images, all the time wondering what the real story was. Now I have some insight into it.
I was so intrigued by it, I couldn't stop watching it until the end! Thanks for sharing it.

We use Yakum ropes at home. 2-1/2" rope pulls out our loaded 80' air drill with 1200 bushels on board. Add the weight of a quad track 600 and you have close to 180,000lbs of dead weight. That rope has pulled it out more than a dozen times in the last 3 years of use

Another awesome recovery. Thank you for all the showing of the wet mud causing the sinking of truck. I have always been fascinated with mechanics and how engines work. I helped my kids dad rebuild a 1982 Mercury Marquis engine in the late 80's. He told everyone that if I had his strength, I'd have been a better mechanic than he was because I understood everything back then. Lol. I may be old but still love all this.

Man you so right about that red rope very impressive I used to work in the oil field we used to run 10,000 acres and sometimes 25 2 + acres for labor charges delete pipe in the Gulf of Mexico when you when you ain't got nothing to hook up a winch to a good saying anchor buried in the ground gives you something to dip when it's off of that won't come up and hit the vehicle saying Acres always have to be trip from the backside of the anchor to flip it up out of the sand after it digs in can pull a whole lot of weight off of it imagine a lie barzilay in 36 inch pipe pulling yourself along the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico the same concept for your big recovery vehicle would be to add an anchor to it when you ain't got none too wet on but that type of vehicle you going to have to build a big saying acre or find one big enough for the job appreciate the great content keep up the good work and by the way that red rope how big around is it and could it be braided together with other big red ropes would make it really really strong LOL

I am thoroughly impressed with how well this recovery went. I just recently started getting into off-roading. After seeing this video, I think I need to add that rope to my gear. I'm curious to see what it takes to snap that rope.
