I am definitely no artist but I will try designing a kamon. I have started in Kendo and Iaido and eventually want to place a crest on my uniform. My desire is to create something my own, honoring the timeless art of the Japanese kamon while respecting Japan by honoring myself and creating a custom kamon in-line with my own ancestral values, places, and things. Let's see how it turns out.

That's a good question. Unfortunately, there's no specific method to study, but you can get used to those patterns/design with a kamon catalog such as "Japanese Design Motifs: 4,260 Illustrations of Japanese Crests " amzn.to/2S0Vm4a or you can work on with "Traditional Japanese Family Crests for Artists and Craftspeople (Dover Pictorial Archive) " amzn.to/2PKqatd to create your own pattern. Excuse me, for asking this so abruptly, but are you two, Kyogen and Patternz, have the same design process and same price range to design a family crest? I know some of my friends would love a mandala-mon and other would prefer traditional kamon. Thank you in advance

Unfortunately, I can't say that our (Patternz) and Kyogen's design process and price range are the same since I don't know their current price range. You can visit their website and contact them to see how it works and how much they charge.

As you've mentioned, if you prefer a mandala-mon, you should go with Kyogen. If you prefer a traditional Kamon design, Patternz may be your choice.
