An old-school pitcher chucking 120 pitches, averages 6 2/3 inning per start, and hurls a no-no against a line up with a quartet of prodigal youngsters.
That's what makes baseball unlike any other game. History was made yesterday, and it will only get better over time. It's not every day when you watch a player join an elite group of five pitchers with 3+ no-hitters.

This and another CY punches his ticket to Cooper's Town.
The stats are there, they'll be better before he's done, but JV is the most dominant pitcher of his generation.
Scherzer's doesn't have the years on top, and no one else has JV's durability.
He's been on the IL once, and had off season surgery once, this hampered him for a season.
But for 15 seasons he's been a horse and an ace, those two things don't always go together.
2 seasons with less that 200 IP: rookie and 2015 (injury).
    He's struck out over 200 9 times.
That longevity of consistent excellence is HoFer.
All the other contenders, might have a few of the hallmarks of dominance, but JV has them all.

The last time any MLB pitcher reached three no-hitters was 45 years ago with Nolan Ryan in 1974. Of course we know Ryan went on to get 4 more after the three. Still not a record easy to achieve especially with all the home runs and great hitters these days.

  • @jerrybrownell3633

33 pitchers have thrown at least 2 no hitters. With his 3rd Verlander joins Nolan Ryan(7), Sandy Koufax(4), Cy Young and Bob Feller. At age 36 he might have at least one more in
that aging right arm. Good job Justin.

    • @jyu467

Koufax with 4 is mind boggling considering that he had a short career.

@@jyu467 Sandy only played 11 years (1955-1966). His first 5 years he had that devastating fast ball but he couldn't get his breaking ball over the plate. He struggled with mediocrity trying to stay above the .500 mark. At one point he thought of quitting but then with the help of his pitching coach he learned to throw his curve ball for strikes. His last 5 years was the greatest stretch of pitching excellence in league annals. He won the pitching Triple Crown( wins/ ERA/Strike outs) 3 times. Averaged 26 wins. Won 3 Cy Young's and threw those 4 no hitters. He retired with 165 career wins but 103 of them came in his last 5 years.

I love Verlander, but does anyone else think it’s suspicious that he is having his best season at 36 years old? I’m a Tigers fan and I’ve followed his career closely and it was awesome to watch his prime, in which he won an MVP and led a stacked Tigers staff. But then he declined big time. He really struggled for a few years and his velocity was way down, but then for some reason his velocity returned and he peaked again, and now he’s dominating everyone. Now he throws a no-hitter with 120-some pitches, still throwing 97mph in the 9th. People don’t usually peak a second time in their mid-30s with an increase in velocity naturally. Verlander is one of my favorite players, and I really hope not, but it sure seems like he’s getting help from PEDs.
