He flew the 747 that transported the shuttle, and the B52 that launched the X15, so he was familiar with large aircraft, but I couldn't say if he was familiar with the specific type.
It was certainly an interesting test. Out of curiosity, can I ask why you no longer respect them? I'm aware of some ill will towards them, but I've never really looked into such things.
