I'm so happy you talk about cotton paper. I was ready to give up on watercolors, until I watched your video on" Its not you, its your paper," It changed everything!!! I buy Arches on sale then I'll take it to Office Depot and they will cut it down, spiral-bound and put a cover for around $5.50. I made your Christmas cards and for my Aunt&Uncle their card was an illustration of them that I learned from you. They loved it and framed it. Thanks so much.😊
I get the 7 x 10 block Arches when it's on sale. I draw a line down the middle so there are two 5 x 7 pictures. It's great to bring outside to paint. I do one whole painting but put a focal point in each 5 x 7 section and then it's a set of two. A few years ago, quite a few of my friends requested that I do a set for them to give as gifts. They paid me around $50.00 per set.
Awesome 😍...... The thing I love about videos are 1. they way you present them 2. They are all real-time videos. Keep making good content videos like these. As I told you before, you are one of my guru in watercoloring. Wish you all the success in the world Emma.❤️❤️
Passing along a tip for brush drying - glue a clothespin horizontally to a surface such as the side of a storage unit. Now you can clip the handle of the damp brush to hold it with bristles facing down. Easy!
Thanks for another very informative video, Emma. I have learned how to paint in watercolor from watching your videos and can see an improvement in only a couple of months. So thank you for all your help and encouragement.
Thanks Emma, love that it's so simple and you've given options for supplies. I'm in Australia, so Eckersley's is the local good supplier but also Amazon supplies pretty much everything you've mentioned as well. Keep up the great work. Sending love and hugs your way xx
Thanks Emma. You real inspire me in a way, you stick to minimal supplies same brushes, same paints unlike most of youtubers how do you stop yourself buying diff brands...want your suggestion..
Thanks, very helpful! I've been using Canson (because I'm still a beginner) but after watching a bunch of comparison videos of paper, tried Arches just to see how different it is and now I don't think I can go back. 😥 The paint behaves so much better on good paper.
I'm also addicted to Princeton Snap brushes because of you, Emma! I have their Lauren line, too much "bend." Snap have the BEST control of any brush out there. I also bought a bundle of Etchr books thanks to your review! 1) Can you demonstrate how to actually USE a visual journal, because mine's full of good stuff & crap! Lol 2) What's the largest size paper you've painted on? Perhaps a tutorial on that? 3) Can you show us how to paint all of those lovely people in your Etchr book? 4) Do you mix/blend color in your palette, then apply; or--mix it on your paper? 5) Perhaps a tutorial on fall flowers: mums, tube dahlias, marigolds, etc.? 6) Where do you find your subjects to paint? You've gotten SOOO good! People, florals, houses. Inspiring! Do you draw/paint every day? I've learned more from you than ANY one out there, Emma, so thanks a million! Frances (Fanna) Turano Denver, CO
I think if I would have started with snap brushes I would have liked them more. But now that I’ve found DaVincis it’s hard for me to use them for anything except for swatching lol. Davinci is my ride or die brush brand. 🙌🏻 also fell in love with Sennelier paints and Daniel Smith. Expensive but cotman doesn’t blend as smooth as them. Sennelier glides like butter on paper.
Thanks for sharing this valuable info. After watching your videos I purchased the Cotman colors and the Snap brushes. I love them! Your videos are so informative and inspiring.....keep them coming 🤗. Thanks for sharing your talent with us!
Love your videos and your florals. ♡ Wondered if you would do a video showing us how you do your floral bookmarks? Sorry if you already have and I have missed this....would just love some videos on what you do with the offcut paper/bookmarks. =) ♡ x Keep up your Beautiful work, it has encouraged me to pick up the paint brush and start watercolours. =) x
Love your watercolor journey Emma; thank you for sharing yourself and for sharing about Princesnap brushes - awesome brushes! I would love to rock a dagger brush now; all the ones I have tried are duds... lol .. maybe I'm the dud ... anyway, any help in that arena is appreciated... cheers!
I am a beginner painter. I came across your videos and absolutely love you! You make thinks so simple!! Any tips on tower petals? I can’t seem to get them looking like petals they just look like lines. I try to flow what you suggest but I just can’t get it down. Thanks for all of your tutorials!
Here in Japan I paid like 2 dollars for Winsor & Newton Cotman tubes 🤩 professional one vary from 5 to 7 dollars each, but I decided to go with Cotman since I’m still learning
I bought some off of Amazon and I wasn’t impressed. Mine had very little texture and didn’t feel like 100% cotton. I like the Meeden Cold Pressed watercolor block. It’s better than Bee and cheaper too. I got a 7x10 block for $14.99, also Arteza 100% cotton cold pressed on Amazon is decent too. It’s slightly more expensive at $19.99
Great info Emma. Going to order the brushes. I love the way they look when you use them. Thanks for sharing all your favorite things to use. 💕☀️ Happy Day!
Thank you for this video Emma! I literally just looked at my watercolor brushes and came on here and your video was here! Absolutely love all of your videos! So fun and helpful! Definitely inspired me to paint a little tomorrow! And your illustrations in your hot pressed book are stunning!
I think the argument on brands of paint will continue forever. There are a couple of things that I think should never be argued about, and one of them is quality of paper. While I do have a few pads of cellulose-based watercolor paper, they are for practice. But once you use cotton paper, it’s really hard to go back, even for practice! I used to think that you had to spend a lot of money in order to have decent watercolor brushes, but since finding the Snap brushes, I’m sold. They work beautifully, and give me the same results as the ones that I spent too much money for!
Since this is your latest I thought I'd reach more people here than on an older posting about flowers. As a newby often I'm stuck for ideas for simple flowers. A couple years ago my daughter gave me an adult coloring book called "World of Flowers" by Johanna Basford. These are pen drawings of realistic and fantasy flowers. Some are by themselves and some are in arrangements. Check this book out for wonderful ideas and clear pictures to see what goes in front or behind what. I can't wait to get started! Thank you, E, for your generosity. Please start a Patreon account so we can support you in a practical way.
Just cut down what was left of a huge sized block of arches paper...you inspired and encouraged use of good paper (even for beginners)...using cheaper paper might feel less extravagant but it’s frustrating when trying to improve skills, watching wonderful tutorials (like yours ) and the results are sort of “blah”.....also love those snap brushes (got them a while back at your suggestion in a tutorial )
Hi Emma, I was wondering if you (or others reading this!) have noticed a difference between using a hair dryer, using a heat tool, or allowing watercolor to air dry. I have a craft heat tool as well, and use it sometimes, but occasionally think it is moving the pigments around and making the final painting a little different than it would be air-dried.
I know this is an older video, but I find DeSerres has Arches paper cheaper than Michaels or Amazon. They are out here in Eastern Ontario, but you can also order online. :-)
Great information Emma. I really enjoy all of your videos. I just wanted to tell you a couple of things. Sometime you should venture out and try some Daniel Smith granulating paint. (If you enjoy granulating paint.) Look at their primatek colors and watch some videos here on UA-cam about them. They are sooooo amazing! I love them so much and don’t know of any other paint that can compare. I just want you to know that there is amazing paint out there just waiting for you to discover it. It’s especially good for landscapes - it’s made from real rocks and minerals. Also, there is a masking fluid (I can’t remember the brand) that has a point on the end to use as you apply it. Then it plugs the hole as you close the bottle so your fluid doesn’t dry up. I like it much better than my Windsor and newton and was glad to discover it. I like to share that information as I discover new things.
I just completed 2 huge waterfall paintings using the DS "Lunar Line." I have 6, and used Lunar Black, Blue & Violet for the huge rock walls on either side of my waterfalls. THEY ARE GORGEOUSLY GRANULATING COLORS! I'm a die hard Da Vinci Paint user, but there are times when we all need a bit o' magic on certain parts of our paintings. And the masking fluid you speak of is also made by Daniel Smith. Comes with several point sizes so you can switch for a thicker line or thinner line. Amazon sells all of what I mentioned. But yes, the granulation that occurs with the DS brand blew me away! Winsor & Newton sells a granulation medium if one is highly resistant to trying other colors. :)
I got kind of addicted to your videos recently. There are some supplies(those brushes) that I can't get where I live so I even tried to order them for international shipping. Hope I receive them ASAP!
Hi Emma, Could you please link where I might find the large rose gold clamp you show in this video? I can't seem to find the extra large ones anywhere. Thanks 😊
Thank you for this video. Very informative and now I’ll definitely buy the heat tool. I tried my hairdryer but it was a bit of a nuisance going to the bathroom every time I need to use it when I was painting. Does it matter which brand you buy, I’ve seen some on line that look like the “WOW” brand but are a bit cheaper. I’m always a bit wary of the things like that. If anyone can advise me I’d love to hear what you have to say. Thanks. Renate.
I don’t have a store but the supplies are listed in the description with links! If some (like the paper) seems a bit off it’s because they may not be available anymore.
Great video, super helpful! I'm looking on Amazon to buy the snap brushes and I see there's white or golden hairs, do you know if there's any difference? I couldn't find any🤷🏻♀️ Thanks alot!!
Great review of materials!! As an alternative to Arches I have good success with Fabriano Artistico which is also 100% cotton and is a bit easier to find now. I find a lot of supplies for good cost at Jerry's Artarama online.
Cotton paper is the #1 necessity. I do not like Arches, at all, however :-|. I love Cheap Joe's Kilimanjaro (especially the 16-sheet, 11" x 15" sample pack for $11), and Legion Stonehenge. They take a beating, and are the least expensive I've found.
The main difference between student and artist grade paint is - student grade contains more ‘filler’, whereas artist grade contains more pure pigment 😊
Please make all your videos with close caption notice this is no9ne for this and I am not the only one having problems But I am hard of hearing and I need this or make a list of the supplies. I am using my IPAD at times it is a pain!
LOL Erica! Yes--"are-SHUSH" for me. My favorite carbonated water "La Croix," isn't pronounced "La Croy," rather "La Cr-AWW! LOL I don't live in France, so I'm always torn how to say these words!
I think the problem is widespread with many items, not just art supplies. Production is more difficult because people are either sick with the virus or they were laid off because the plant was closed for awhile. Suppliers are having the same problems, so it’s a domino effect.
Companies and factories shut down for awhile so there was a long pause in the supply making through companies! Hopefully it will be back to normal again

Brilliant! My husband will be happy to learn this, as he gave me a sable set for my birthday this year. Going to try this!
I just got into watercolor painting and have found your tutorials to be the best! Thank you, Emma.
So useful to have all of this information consolidated in one place. And loved the glimpses into your sketchbooks!
Thanks for another very informative video, Emma. I have learned how to paint in watercolor from watching your videos and can see an improvement in only a couple of months. So thank you for all your help and encouragement.

So interesting! I use Canson too! The "XL" 90lb book. I am really starting to feel like it holds me back. The watermarks are atrocious!
Your videos are so hepful!! A big thank you ❤

that’s the first time I have seen your illustrations, wow! I love them.

I use and hanger with tiny rubber bands to dry my brushes

I've told Emma this same thing several times! As an instructor, she deserves to be paid. Agreed HH!
But not ads in the middle of the tutorials, please!
The ads aren’t Emma’s responsibility. UA-cam does that instead of a paid subscription (which, I fear, is coming).

'More pricy' or 'pricier'. Not 'more pricier'. Love the flower paintings.

I've seen some (online) paintings recently using the Daniel Smith Primatek paints and am dying to get a couple!

Maybe you’ve already answered this, but do you have an Amazon store? With all your recommended supplies in it?
I don’t have a store but the supplies are listed in the description with links! If some (like the paper) seems a bit off it’s because they may not be available anymore.
Great video, super helpful! I'm looking on Amazon to buy the snap brushes and I see there's white or golden hairs, do you know if there's any difference? I couldn't find any🤷🏻♀️

Delta Art Supply Edmonton. Is is much better buy for paper than Michael's
Thx for the video... After finishing the painting, what do you apply on the top the give it some shine or yo preserve the colours?
Thx again🙏
I don’t do anything to them 😬

Try Jerrys Artorama for art supplies
Emma, I know you were sent it, but where is the best place (in Canada) to buy the Etcher sketchbook? Likely, Amazon...
I actually purchased some after they sent me the one and I got it from their website.
Great video!! But I was wondering, how loud is that heating tool? I always thought they were very noisy!
It’s similar to the sound of a hair dryer
You mentioned 2 favourite watercolor artists . Could you share who they are ?
Stephanie Fehrenbach and Jenna Rainey!
If you were only allowed one pink which would it be-opera or the permanent rose.
permanent rose! Opera rose is too neon for me... I don't really use it
@@EmmaLefebvre Thankyou!
Opera
Please make all your videos with close caption notice this is no9ne for this and I am not the only one having problems
But I am hard of hearing and I need this or make a list of the supplies. I am using my IPAD at times it is a pain!
I agree that paper is #1. I almost gave up using Canson and other wood pulp papers. Canson owns Arches (ARE-chh pronunciation). 😊
LOL Erica! Yes--"are-SHUSH" for me. My favorite carbonated water "La Croix," isn't pronounced "La Croy," rather "La Cr-AWW! LOL I don't live in France, so I'm always torn how to say these words!
Do the heat tool damage watercolor paper?
No, I use mine on low and high with zero damage. Just keep the nose at least 3" away from the paper surface and keep it moving.
Emma what is the name of the paper you can use both sides?
Etchrlab.com !
Can we get these on Amazon??
It may be a silly question, but why did a pandemic cause a drop in the supply of art products? Because everyone stays home?
I think the problem is widespread with many items, not just art supplies. Production is more difficult because people are either sick with the virus or they were laid off because the plant was closed for awhile. Suppliers are having the same problems, so it’s a domino effect.
Companies and factories shut down for awhile so there was a long pause in the supply making through companies! Hopefully it will be back to normal again
@Emma Lefebvre @Betty Heath
Thank you for your reply. I got it.
Yes, we hope the early recovery of normal world 😢
Hello beautiful
Hello. :)
Never buy art supplies from Amazon
I get your sentiment but Jerry's and Cheap Joe's take forever to ship
Why Mary?
