Africa's Cowboy Capitalists (Full Length)

  • For maverick entrepreneur Ian Cox, Africa is the last frontier of free enterprise. The former small-time hustler has been busting his ass on the continent for years, selling and moving merchandise. In 2012 he nabbed a lucrative United Nations contract to transport equipment from South Africa to South Sudan, a country on many countries' embargo list. The other problem: the journey north entails passing through countless checkpoints and dealing with bribe-happy officials and their nonsensical paperwork and regulations.
    Photographer and filmmaker Tim Freccia followed around Ian and the guys he hired for this job. "Cowboy Capitalists" documents their attempts to navigate the continent's dangerous roads and bureaucratic chaos.

    From Uganda and I recognize much of this . The terrain is now improved (mostly roads) . The people are mostly welcoming and friendly . South Sudan was just out of war war then , thus the hostility . However as Ian said there's lack of resources and gaping opportunities for any one creative and resourceful enough to solve even basic problems . And it wouldn't cost too much either as everything is affordable (even the corrupt guys) in most of Sub Saharan Africa .

    My father in law runs an import export business for artists brushes. He had a container of brushes that he was trying to get through Nigerian customs. They impounded it for no reason, so he had to fly down there to work it through, so he could sell it to the local distributor. When he got there an officer took his passport and threw it in a big pile of other passports. He then spent the rest of the day paying various people and officers to get his passport back. Once he had his passport again, he turned around and boarded the next plane home, leaving his container in impound. He then swore he would never do business in Africa again.

    That guy Ray seems like a hell of a resourceful type of guy to have along for this kind of work. Like others, I noticed how he adopted an accent when talking to some Africans. It's kind of funny, but I understand it. I've worked with Punjabi Indians, South Africans, and other folks who have a very distinctive way of coloring their english...and without even realizing it when you are in the midst of another culture you kind of adopt their accent while communicating with them. It's not exactly necessary to do this to be understood or anything, it's just something you do without consciously thinking about it.

    • @McTimmyFly
      @McTimmyFly 8 років тому +19

      +Mog Yeah man, it's funny. I used to think my father was demeaning people when he changed his word pronunciation and drastically simplified his syntax and grammar whenever we were out of the country. Now that I work outside of the US, I find myself doing it as well so that the locals can understand me more easily. Funny too is that the grammar simplifications change from country to country depending on how their native languages work.

U gotta remember it's not like driving across the US, Africa is a many independent countries which always make it harder for shipping and trade, plus a lot of curruption that still needs to be worked out..

      Fabio Augusto o I never have, nor did I claim that I did. But I do make it a point to educate myself and even the slightest research of Africa will tell you this. Of course not ALL of Africa, but a good amount of countries are underdeveloped due to MANY different reasons.. Read a book.

      I agree with you sir: Africa is a vast continent. Arguably, there are countries in europe where development seems just as stale. Listen bro it's easy to say things based on what you read and on what the media chooses to show (I know you know....) go to west Africa chill for 2 days and then let me know how it be. ''read a book'' xD books can only take you so far young man, if you dont touch things with your hands youll be just as ignorant as the next man.

    To me this story was not about Africa's cowboy capitalists. It was about one guy's mission to get some trucks from the South to the North, there wasn't even more than one story investigated. Super interesting story, (and I'm sure the filmmaking was as arduous as the truck journey) but it just wasn't what was "written on the tin" so to speak.

    These guys are smart, they may seem crazy but when you look at the richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote, he managed to make his billions because he had virtually no competition in the African markets. Now everyone is trying to tap into Africa when they see how fast his wealth is growing. In 2008 he was at 3.3 billion , just 6 years later he is now at 24 billion, if that's not progress I don't know what is. I don't mind if people think Africa is a shithole, in fact I love it, that means we don't all have to rush at once.
