Being a Black Bull Rider in a Majority White Sport
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- In the heyday of America's Old West, roughly a fourth of the cowboys were black. But today, the world of professional bull riding, a sport rooted in ranching culture, is predominantly white.
On this episode of 'MINORITY REPORTS,' VICE sent Lee Adams to Texas to meet Neil Holmes and Ezekiel Mitchell-two black bull riders at different points in their careers-to find out what it’s like as a person of color trying to make it in the predominantly white world of professional bull riding. Holmes-an accomplished pro on the eve of his retirement-explains how he got into bull riding, and talks about leaving the sport as the only black pro ranked in the top 100 bull riders. Desperately trying to fill Holmes's shoes is Mitchell, who's struggled with the funds to travel, and has experienced racism in the sport first-hand.
We look into why one of the most popular sports in America has so few professional black athletes at its highest levels, and explore some of the barriers to entry that have made black representation difficult in the sport.

@@Hamsterman691 honestly I just moved out West and I know a few cowboys now. You wouldn't believe what these guys get paid for 7 days on. A lot of these guys supplement their income from cowboying with rodeos and even then they make an extra 1000 a month off of two or three rodeos. Rural poverty is a big thing in America and 85k goes a long way out there.

This video perfectly depicts the poverty trap and how hard it is to get out of it. A man as talented as Ezekiel Mitchell had to put his career on hold just to pay for repairs to his house. There are people worse off with as much or even more talent who have to completely sacrifice their dreams just to survive, so sad.

I’m sorry to hear that he’s experienced racism in Texas. We lived in El Paso, Texas for 10 years and were as white people, we were the minority. We moved to South Carolina and again, we were the minority. It’s taught my children a lot. And I’m sorry this incredible young man has gone through what he has because he’s quite an interesting young man.
Oh stop pandering Jessica. I’m white and I’ve experienced racism in Texas. Stop taking the bait.
Yeah, the western part of the state is different. The culture is very much Hispanic. The Rodeo circuits here are mixed between White, Mexican and Brazilians. The actual cowboying on ranches is mostly Mexicans, or healthy mix from white and Mexican. But you don't see African Americans very often. You'd get looks from both, but just because you dont see it often if not at all. But you'd get encouraged because people want it to grow.
Whatever you need to think, the race card is played for sympathy and MONEY.

either that or he's the last...if blacks don't want to be a bull rider...so be it. Same thing as Golf with Tiger and Bubba in Nascar. Whites have to fight harder in NBA. I just say so what. Color doesn't matter...When I played at College in Basketball and was the the only white boy I got a lot of disrespect or racist....until I showed off my 37 vertical jump and I was only 6'2' and blocked the main star at 6'6" or 7".
@@ajaxslamgoody9736 There aren't many whites in the NBA not because the league is racist but rather Black people have superior athletic genes...
I'm so glad Ezekiel didn't back down against his peers when they were talking about race. And I wouldn't have blamed him if he had. I've definitely had moments in majority white spaces where I've ultimately decided to end the conversation. It can be absolutely draining to try to have a discussion with someone who does not plan on listening to you. Crazy how the one guy can acknowledge he is not coming from a black perspective, but also deny his own "friend's" experience.
I hope Ezekiel has community that will listen to him and raise him up. Need more people to understand that you don't improve racism by ignoring its presence.
And yes! Everyone in the comments who is saying they don't care about the color of the rider is missing the point. You may not. Doesn't change the fact that many still do.
When people are telling you they aren’t racist, listen to them. Whites are tired of being told they are racist.
When people react a certain way to you, it’s because you have an abrasive personality. Not because you are black.
You don’t have to be black to understand discrimination. There are people in this world that just don’t like “you”, wouldn’t matter what color you are. Is every white person I’ve had conflict with over the years a racist? .. no. The only people that make it about being black are black people. The real, reality is most black folk are good, just like most white folk, asian folk, hispanic folk, etc., etc., are good. The reality is there are just bad people in this world. Cowboys don’t see color only the man. If you don’t believe that, you’ve never met one.

@@AutoSearPin I guess you missed the part where they said they've faced racism in the sport.
When Neil said he looks around the stadium to see faces that are similar to his I FELT that. IDK what it is, but I myself find myself looking for familiar faces when I walk in a room.

Small hats...controlling the narrative in America for decades. If "they" can't convince you to hate your 'whiteness', then they'll train your children to hate you.

If you take just a few minutes to look up who the top executives and owners of these companies are (Soros Fund is pretty obvious, Yeah, the same Soros funding BLM riots), you'll quickly realize that there is a common thread, from Google (UA-cam) to Facebook, Walt Disney to Vice, the largest advertising agencies to their control of the smallest ones (and if you don't know that advertising plays a huge part in controlling the narrative, then you aren't paying attention)...the levers of power are in the hands of a very small minority of people that are fond of small hats...and hate Christian based White Western society.

I really appreciate the diversity in this video. all of us white boi's from Texas ain't racist....
@David Leighton Both sides play on identity politics because race is a reliable characteristic of their electorate. I think there is racism in all communities more or less depending on the areas but it is inaccurate to say anti-white racism is the most common in the us. For example, the populations that are the most targeted by (reported) hate crimes per million residents are by far the jews, then blacks, then muslims, and several other groups comes before the whites. Im not saying it necessarily shows the bigger picture, but it certainly gives a trend.
abagond.wordpress.com/2011/01/22/hate-crime-rate/
I think racism is a complex issue and is not as simple as how conservatives and liberals generally says it is. Constantly calling the other side 'racist' is not going to solve any racial issue.
Never thought I would hear a bull rider say "this is where my homies were raised at". Just funny for some reason

There are some fantastically talented black cowboys here in the south. Cowboy up and cowboy code.
He's got some very wise words, especially the " if you can't control it, it ain't worth worrying about"
It reminds me of when I moved to Tennessee and was playing football. I was one of 3 non black players and it did feel weird. But the first practice when I burned the defense and scored that first TD and everyone at practice stopped and all just clapped, I never once worried about being the minority there anymore and then After that I just played ball.
You played with BBC balls? Dang bro, you got the video?

It’s much different. Most people in This sport has never seen a black man competing. There are plenty of white football players. It doesn’t take away from you experience but what he is doing is groundbreaking and makes a difference for young black men who may want to try this sport. Being white in a black space is not the same as a black man riding up in a historically ALL white sport. Especially in the south.
At least he got to retire in one piece🙏🏾
He retired?
thegoatplays yep, still young too
Neil was a damn hand and It Is a shame he retired with so much potential still
Eric Silva he said he did it for 15 years.
Eric Silva nah man he was number 10 in the world he retired a legend dude
My cousin Steve Reagor is the only black calf roping champion in Oklahoma. That side of my family are all accomplished cowboys and cowgirls and Im proud of all them.
That’s very cool! Sounds like a talented family you have
Crazy how as soon as he spoke up around his friends they verbally got on him...it was fine when he just shut up an rode bulls though...weird but to the folks that respect ALL riders ...respect
So they are just supposed to ignore bullshit that is comming out of his mouth
@@zacktaylor4239 funny how white folks never want to be reminded of there own racism...want everyone to shut up and go along....smh
@@zacktaylor4239 they're suppose to allow him to speak his opinion because unlike all those boys talking he's the only one that's black. If they can't respect that and let him talk then they aren't his "friends".
Maybe they don’t like talking about race. They all get a long and love the sport that unites them. Then here comes this reporter to stir up the pot and everyone’s got their own opinions that they’re entitled to. It may cause arguments but it seems that they all agree on one thing and that’s color doesn’t fkn matter. Where I see they disagree on is if people are racist in the sport. Zeke said he’s experienced it. The white kids haven’t so they disagree but they acknowledge that they’ve never been black. Either way I’m sure they are just glad to be friends.
@@bernieee12 See the difference between the reporter and Zeke is that Zeke brushes off on it by not playing the victim card.
bull riders have probably the tightest brotherhood, if youre willing to strap on to a bull you'll be accepted no matter who you are.

Yep I'm proof
True, the bull doesn’t care who you are.
SaltyBro he said Pro top level bull riding not your average day Joe pall
Dirty Grandpa I think they meant in media, movies, history books etc.
Extraordinary video!!! Neil Holmes’ name should me more well known for sure! Much respect for his passions and his yearning for sharing his knowledge with the youth. Craig Jackson as well…
"I'm going to fit in, weather you like it or not I'm going to be here" I love it!
Ezekiel is very blessed.. He literally rides and when the bull bucks him off Ezekiel flawlessly appears to just hop off as if its nothing.. He even has his own back.. Hes precautious and quick.
He's not blessed, he's talented.

Riding a bull in America as an African American -- A metaphor for living life in America as a Black person!
U know you´re really country when you say: -"All the girls love bull riders"
I doubt they are trying to keep black people out of the sport of bull riding. I'm just guessing most black people really just don't wanna ride bulls.
Don for the ones that do want to ride it's very tough.
+Jay Dial hopefully you are speaking from experience
Yes sir. I dont ride bulls but I know exactly what he is talking about my family has a couple bull riders. I know the struggle.
Hahaha that's probably the truth. I don't think majority of white ppl who grew up outside of south would care too much about bull riding neither.
Bull riding seems like a white people sport, like polo on horses💀
Much respect and love for the brotha and everyone involved in his life.
I like how they talk about race issues or situations without getting offended or butt hurt.

This show is literally called minority reports, why tf are you mad that theyre talking about racism
Because minority =/= racism. You can be a minority without it being a bad thing. So for them to constantly try and make this mans whole career a fight against racism. The man just wants to bull ride. And the fans love him. The incident he had wete strangers who dodnt know him or care to. Nothing involvong bullriding. Its unrelated.
Too Late To Care but being that most minorities in America face racism, what is your point?

I’m very glad this is surfacing. Being in the industry I know that it is hard for anyone that is different to be comfortable in that atmosphere. There are a lot of racist elders that haven’t died off but I see change happening. In a lot of circumstances due to the new outlooks on diversity- I’ve seen people of a different race blow up because they are unlike the others. I love it and hope it continues. I know some bad ass cowboys and they all represent different races and nationalities. I encourage anyone with guts to go after that glory!
This wouldn’t be such a big deal if people let go of stereotypes I wish we as people could accept that regardless of race people love to do what they do stop putting a color on things my husband loves big trucks mud grips and shocks he’s a welder and he gets the most flack from our own race sadly they love to tell him that he’s trying to be like white boys this issue is putting a color on everything I know plenty of men in trades of all races that love big trucks shocks and mud grips and even duallies for rig welding. My husband just doesn’t like rims and flashy cars he prefers his truck plus it makes him money

There probably not mad he has a truck like the white boys but are jealous of his success and has a skill that pays very well. #WELDLIFE$$$
Black people remind everyone of race and stereotypes by saying things are racist if we stopped saying these things then everyone would forget that we are different
you gotta stop stereotyping people. I have liberal friends who enjoy guns, trucks, and a good steak.
And then there's all the Brazilian riders who have made absolute names for themselves over in their home country and here in the states as well, this is why I will always love bull riding and the world of Rodeo as well.
And I'm a proud Hispanic
Lots to be proud of buddy!
I’m almost 60, when I grew up I had mates (friends) from everywhere globally, despite my parents racist attitude, today I enjoy a lot of friendships with those same people, during my career I’ve had the opportunity to move my family to India for 4 years, I just can’t understand why people place so much importance on skin colour, at the end of the day I’ve raised 4 “colour blind” kids, all these stories from the states are just unbelievable
Mad respect to you. exposing someone in different cultures does open someone's mind. I really don't get why some have to hate someone for being different. it only takes a few seconds to have a decent conversation.

I say, RESPECT! that is dope. we need more brown and black surfers, skaters, motocross riders, snowboarders, and bull riders out there. no sport should be about color. if you good then you good, that simple.
FOG Bloodbought, I feel they would be more respected in those sports than bullriding. Bullriding has nothing but people who believe the civil war was about state's rights.
No, no we don't. We need more people of ANY color to do ANYTHING they want. Why do they have to be brown? Don't you realize you're the one being racist?
lol....this guy MUST be a WHITE guy that just don't get it....like those white bull riders in the vid...lol
Black should stay do rep, run for ball and be dope 👍🏻
If you feel that way why do we “NEED” more brown or black people if it shouldn’t be about color
I wish ol boy happiness and success!!!! It’s cool he’s trying something even though people look at him different! I have respect for him
This was sad, enlightening, fabulous , beautiful, shameful. I am so proud of these Black cowboys for their heart and fight.
Yeah I love them too we need more people like them
I grew up on the Great Plains and Native American cowboys were known to be among the best cowboys in our area of the country. Not just in the rodeo, but in life. They were well respected for their skills, but I'm sure they dealt with a good portion of racism.
Our hired hand was Native American and his son, Roland, was the only guy my dad would call for help with a horse behavior issue. He was a very talented horse trainer.
Whenever Roland was in a rodeo nearby we'd go to support him. I'll never forget how handsome he was in his white hat. 😍 I had a bit of a crush on him, actually, lol, starting when I was 4 or 5. 😁 I saw him recently at a funeral and we had a good laugh about what a nuisance I was. I told him I wasn't a brat, I was a woman in love. 😂😂
You freak stop typing about your lust
This was really good!!! Kudo's to all of these young men both Black and White for their honest conversations as well as their talents!
i think many people are missing the point of this series. its about how race effects stuff in ways you wouldnt expect. THATS why his race is mentioned.
Cheese race didn't affect them, the finances did. White, black, Asian, or Hispanic, if you lack the money, you won't go nowhere. I didn't see any institutional racism holding them back. There was individual racism, but that doesn't matter, if the individual can block it off.
Jesus-Pierre Miguel III but some of those financial issues are INFLUENCED due to their race. Stop trying to erase what exists.
Sharmaine washington Can you give any examples of institutional racism where the state is discriminating a group of people based on race, because it looks to me that the only problem in America regarding race relations is actual racists, both white and black. Everyone has the same opportunity there are white people living in poverty aswell
Keith Lynch agree and disagree with that. Sure it is actaul racists pushing racism and anyone with half a brain (which sadly isn't the majority in the US anymore) knows that. So I agree with that. As far as equal oppertunity well I sort of agree with that. On paper that is true but in reality there are so many racist out there that it isn't fair with some business owners or other persons of power pushing for certain races to succed within their organizations. And up until very recently even on paper it wasn't equal. Not to mention years of segregation under the pretense of equality have further divided the nation and haven't been undone with the effects still felt decades later (ex. The segregation policies that allowed development companies to develop houses for certain races in certain neighborhoods to push out the others while banks could deny loans to 2 people of all the same financial background based solely on race).
Jivan Grewal Yea I’m probably wrong there about opportunity, over here in Ireland we’re told time and time again about the American dream. Ah well it’s good to see people agreeing over the internet and there looks to be no sign of endless debate so that’s a bonus.
I am so tired of hearing racism. Ezekiel is talented and competes and wins on his own merit.

Serious Question: Are there people out there breeding bulls in hopes to knock one of these crazy dudes off? Like thats their own separate competition?
I was thinking that same thing
Yea they get paid for it the better the bull the more you get paid at each rodeo so there trying to breed some crazy a** bulls hoping it can become the top bull of the year.
The bulls and broncs are athletes, too...
Yup. Bucking bulls have pedigrees and are specifically bred to buck.
Looks that way. Looks like this sport was bred out of boredom and entertainment in some town that needed it. Who wants to ride a bull as a sport?
