City Wah! Take a order prease?!?! - Improving and modding Crybaby pedal

- Sorry, couldn't resist.
Anyway, here's the entire process of turning a shitty Crybaby into a great one.
Mods done to it:
- Range adjustment
- "Vocal mod", basically a slight increase of the Q factor on the bandpass filter
- True bypass conversion
Some helpful links:
- All you need to know about how these work, plus common issues and modding: www.geofex.com/article_folders/wahpedl/wahped.htm
- Some extra, because even though I said "all you need" about the previous link, consistency has never been my thing: www.electrosmash.com/crybaby-...
- A nice article on the bypass thing, way better explained than anything I can mumble on my own: stinkfoot.se/archives/546

I see you're solving two problems we all have. One hand the range and frequency of the filter and on
the other hand the ground, since it's a quite noisy pedal.
I did altered the frequency once, but I would've never thought about doing THAT.
You're my hero! 😄😄
There's definitely a lot of room for improvement on these things, and basically for free!
You’re the Juan!👍
I be me. (Edit: I just got it, apparently I'm the slow as well).
Great vid!
Thanks!
@@lonerjuan today I did the first mod you're recommending, finding a more suitable range for the pot, already sounding better. Then shaved off some of the rubber under the bass side of the wah to increase the range of motion, making sure that the pot doesn't hit the end of range. Will definitely do the vocal mod, and the bypass mod if I find a good schematics! Great video, me encanta
@@faustobrusamolino6345 I'm glad you found it helpful. I'm sure through trial and error you'll dial in your perfect sound. One thing I'd recommend for the vocal mod is , instead of swapping resistors, using alligator clips and a 100k potentiometer. That way you can test infinite values until it sounds right, then you measure the resistance on the pot and get the closest possible value for the resistor.
Ground loop is the noise,, I had same issue, I need my Cry Baby modded or just take the plunge and buy another Patrucci Wah
Ground loops should be taught in school. Fuck learning how to read, you can learn on your own, but ground loops can ruin a life.
hp2 pot has dead zone in the taper. All your doing is reducing the range at the toe down position by adjusting the pot like that, not really moving the lowest frequency down. Now, in some cases pot adjustment is viable option to move the range down but not with stock cry baby.
I don't know what you've read on forums, but that was not the case with this particular pot. I wouldn't have have uploaded the video otherwise. Besides, you can clearly hear how that how particular resonant frequency appears after the mod, a resonance which wasn't there before because it was out of range.
@@lonerjuan well, then that particular wah has very limited physical travel.. And if that’s the case it’s good option to lower the switch and/or swap the grommet under the heel to shorter one. Or cut slice of the grommet. Hp2 (and hp1 and the earlier clarostat/allen bradley) pots have limited travel AND a dead zone on the heel down. The other end does not have dead zone so you want to use all the travel you have there. Hook up multimeter and see what’s what. I’ll ignore that ”what you’ve read on forums”. It was kinda cute but I’ll leave it at that. Funny how on the internet everyone can pretend to be whatever and I’m sure in the real world this discussion would be quite different.
@@vl292 Well yes, I'll have to agree it would be quite different discussion in real life considering it's been ages since anyone told me to grab a multimeter without some laughs being exchanged (I might be an electronics engineer in that real life you speak of, so talk about being cute!).
Either way, like I said earlier, you can hear the change in sound on the video, so feel free to talk limited travel and dead zones all you want, but I was the one who laid hands on this wah (and yes, a multimeter as well) and no dead zone nor travel limitations played a part on the result of this fix. The fix worked as expected, the end.
I'm not trying to be a dick, but you're kinda arguing for the sake of arguing, especially when the before-and-after difference is so clear.
@@lonerjuan You seem to be happy with your tweaks, so it’s all good.
i had to click just for the title! lol! I have my junior crybaby arriving any moment today!
I knew someone would get the title! It was all worth it! Enjoy your wah!
I think its your stink sneaker
Oh I'm sorry! Should I have dressed up for you? What did my sneakers ever do to you anyway?
