    Thank you for the explanations of these mods I'd only read about! The guided-tour video answered a lot of my questions.

    Just want to say thanks for this video. Fantastic and easy to understand mods. Bought the same crybaby you have from the 70's with the 03 sod inductor. Sounded good when I got it. Now i sounds great. Found some info on the net for those who are about to mod their wahs. I don't take credit for any of this information.
    Possible mods;
    - Change 33k resistor to 100k for McCoy spec
    - Drop 33k resistor, change 100k resistor which is in parallel to 4uF (BP) cap to 82k, and change inductor from 500mH to 250mH and bang! Grey spec
    Some transistors need to be changed, as for example:
    - v486 2N5172
    - McCoy BC109 or BC173
    - Grey wah 2N3707 or BC150
    As per parts used in original 486;
    - in place of .22uF's often we see tropicaps, others are common
    - .01uF's are Ducati small radial styroflex's, I can't find ANY small radial styroflex caps, only axial, maybe you'll have more luck, if so let me know, I'll gladly take some from you for fair price
    - 4uF bipolar cap is also pain to find, no mention Ducati's :D I'm sure standard 4,7uF will do just fine

    I've found the 100K ICAR taper to be the most forgiving pot out of all of them. I found the Dunlop Hot Potz just to be too subtle. with a 100K ICAR, 0.047uF sweep cap and Yellow Fasel, I was getting some good Bad Love Clapton tones.

    thank you i appreciate your time and know.edge. I have the wah fever. my freind has a 1967 vox clyde and with the trash can inductor and a 1968 vox stack of dimes the best sounding wahs i have ever heard.i know there are a lot of variables. my goal is to get a wah that sounds like that. i just bought a tdk crybaby. its cool but not as quacky or splashy and actually kind of harsh when compared. i just bought and Italian 60s crybaby with the stack of dimes i cant wait to get it. i also just bought a chicago stack of dimes.the chicago has a true bypass so i will be expirementing with some of your mods. i was very suprised to hear you say the inductor isnt as important as we think.
    i have two five year old vox wahs with the square white caps and the round black plastic inductor . i actually prefer them over the tdk i just got.none compare to my freinds clyde mccoys. what about swapping out the transisters for the bc109c or switching to mullard tropical fish. i wish i could desolder his whole wah and take meter readings on every part ha ha. maybe i just need to buy a 1000 dollar clyde ha ha .im looking for the splasy liquidy overtones on the high end but still quacky. any suggestions . Also who makes the halo inductor you bought and where do you buy them. have you tried a whipple?

      @thebrainard  9 років тому +1

      lol.. not tried the whipple ... the halo was in a broken wah I bought for parts .. I have pretty much settled on having a red and yellow fasel on a switch that allows me to use either or both in parallel ( 250mh ) that combined with the outboard variable bypass is the stuff ...FOR ME
      . the bypass resistor is the key to getting the max out of any inductor .. that is why I put a 100k pot in place so I can fine tune it WHILE PLAYING...
      .. I like the sound of the 109c very much and they are best for the 'vintage' sound but some pots don't taper right with them ..but I prefer the 5117 or equiv from the old Thomas as it is a bit 'harder' but not as hard as the new versions
      when I started experimenting I put trim pots in place of the mid volume and bypass resistors .. after much tweeking I found what I like the best ..
      HAVE FUN

    Hey man great video about the crybaby mods. I have a old thomas organ crybaby and was wondering how I could get more quack but at the same time get "less" growl and have it sound really "clean" but fat and quacky. Would I raise the input resistor to lower gain and then boost the Volume at the end of the circuit to make it cleaner? And I would do the vocal mod to 100k for the added quack I assume. Your thoughts?

    • @thebrainard
      @thebrainard  10 років тому +1

      in my opinion inductor wahs are not going to be really clean.
      do the vocal mod first ..go to 50 or 68k for more quack.
      if you are not up to unity with your bypass drop the volume resistor from 470 to 360
      if you want cleaner still swat the transistors for MPSA18's and go with a red fasil inductor
      that will be about as clean as I have found ...hope that helps

    A bit late to the party, but is the 500k trimpot going from the switch to the output on wah-pot a 3-pin? If so what is configuration? Thank you for the fantastic video btw!

    • @thebrainard
      @thebrainard  3 роки тому +2

      it is a three pin .. one side input , one side ground , center tap is output . it is configed just like a guitar vol pot

      @@thebrainard awesome thank you kind sir!

      pretty sure i used 500k .. you want a high value ... not use i mentioned the value in the vid... been a while

      @@thebrainard I believe it was 500k... lowered gain to 330 on my TDK and it actually sits pretty well, might still lower input R and do your 500k pot. I also put a .015uf as my sweep. That seemed to be the magic number for me.

    Hi Roger! Which inductor has that unique "colored" tone that can't be found with resistors and caps mods?

    • @thebrainard
      @thebrainard  6 років тому +1

      question of the century... IMHO they all do ... each is a little different .....i am not an circuit designer .. but as i understand it what the wah does is a result of how the circuit works and the inductor is an important part of it .. long ago i had a Mutron vol/wah that is non inductor and it did sound pretty good .. .. but it was a clinical like an eq .. the slight grittiness, character and of the 'coil/transformer/magnetic' thing the inductor has doesn't seem to happen with a circuit only ... and each inductor 'likes' to be tweeked in its own way ... the much maligned TDK ( more hi fi ) sounds pretty great if you have a lot of signal going thru it .. the yellow fasel (softer ) sounds best ( to me) with less output ... the bypass cap (vocal mod) is also pretty key to dialing it in to what you want .. hope that helps

      i am circuit designer and modded over 150 modern wahs and all of them sound regular and linear, so are there special vintage inductors that are nonelinear at all to make sound sweet. Do we need to hunt them?

      that is super ... try some of the smaller shop reissues of the halo type .. i heard one of those that sounded a bit more vocal ... the dunlop reissue is weak imo
