  • This video explores one of North America's most fascinating cultural phenomenons: Eastern Christianity amongst Native Alaskans.
It is intended to gather support for the production of a feature-length documentary (currently titled "Arctic Cross") about the Yup'ik people of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The material was filmed during a fact-finding trip to Alaska in August 2011.
For a detailed description of the proposed film and to help fund this project, please visit "Arctic Cross: Phase 2" on Kickstarter at www.kickstarter.com/projects/t...

I’m also Orthodox. What’s truly beautiful is that, unlike the Protestants and Catholic missionaries, we never forced conversion upon anyone. The Orthodox Church led the Native Alaskans into faith of their own free-will, taking them by the hand in friendship and brotherhood.

Here is an excellent book in question / answer format for western christians, especially those with a protestant background. It is full of references to the scripture and it's the best book of it's kind that i have came across:

Came to the East from the west. There are over 35,000 denominations in the world today, and 10 new ones every day. Many of them are of only one parish. It seems that everyone wants to be Pope of his own little sect. However, The Holy orthodox Catholic Christian Church, founded on the Day of Pentacost in 33 AD, by the Holy Spirit upon the Holy Apostles and Desciples, is not now or ever was one of those denominations or sects.

Thank you. There are many Orthodox believers in the US (but certainly not as many as in Russia). I've heard that it is the fastest growing religion in the USA. It is certainly one of the fastest growing if not the actual fastest. I think my church has on average 20 adults baptised each year and they are almost all Americans (all different races though; not just whites). My family's background is Orthodox but i wasn't raised in the faith. I only started going to the Orthodox Church when I was 20 something so I guess I'm somewhat of a convert also. I always look to Russia as our mother in the faith because Orthodoxy came to North America from Russian Empire. I love our Orthodox faith and I love Russia very much also!

I watch your UA-cam video many times and each time I enjoy it more.
I, too, am I convert in 2006 to Orthodoxy from Lutheranism
I have been lucky enough to hear Father Michael in person once and I have watched several UA-cam videos where he speaks; believe it or not I find UA-cam such a blessing for me to hear and to have shared Orthodox information, Orthodox Chants and discussion of the Icons and Saints.
My Grandfather immigrated from Germany in the early 1900s so I'm basically 3rd generation American; what America is wroth on other cultures of Native American is beyond belief and other cultures, also.
During World War II US government imprisoned the Japanese from California in concentration camps; white Germans were not put into concentration camps but US government took away their rights to hunt wild game, to farm as they wish and to worship where they wanted.
Praise the Lord for Orthodox Alaska and it's Native population who have always believed. Lord grant me such faith.
    Glory to Jesus Christ!

Like chidren, people always think thier's is the most beautiful. I think that fact is just fine, loving your home better than anywhere else. Home is where I am now, 3 miles from where I was born. Yea, she also says something like "Sobakat", which is like the Russian word for dog. Chai is the Russian word for tea, so I'm thinking that these are probably Russian loanwords in her language. Since tea would have been introduced by the Russians, it makes sense that their word would be used for it. I know this is true of the word for tea in Labrador Inuttitut, which is "te", pronounced almost exactly like the English word.

Protestants in traditionally Orthodox lands are contamination from the heterodoxy and cacodoxy of the west. This confusion of denominationalism

Most of the Aleut culture died during WW II, however, with the relocations. 10 years of forced relocation can kill a culture.

But Orthodox Christianity is NOT another denomination! On the contrary. It is in fact simply THE HOLY CHURCH! We are indeed pre denominational. Last time I studied math, a denomination was the product of division. The very Body of Christ can not be divided. People and groups can become apostate and seperated from the Holy Church just as cells in the human body can die and be eliminated from the body in various ways.

Hamza Tahir, there are not many aspects of worship, customs, rituals, etc. I appreciate your meaning well, but Jesus is absolutely not a prophet, He is consubstantial with the Father, meaning He and the Father and their Holy Spirits (merged into 1) are all one. The Holy Trinity. Mary gave birth to Jesus the man, for He walked and lived among us. Islam does not believe any of that. Your prophet was a very violent and brutal man, who wrote a very violent and brutal book. Jesus, Son of the Living God was as peaceful as they come, preaching and teaching love and nonviolence is the only way to live.
A Muslim has the right to do anything to an infidel, confiscate his property and have his way with their women. Customs??? Orthodoxy does not confine women and girls in clothing, freedom to shop, have a Male doctor and to do as they need. We do not have Sharia Law such mandates stoning women for being raped while freeing the rapist. Neither do we circumcis girls. Etc., etc. No, I beg to differ, we have very little in common with Islam.
By doctrine, Orthodoxy and Islam are 180 degrees apart, incompatible with each other.

How zealous and faithful to Traditional Orthodox Christianity the simple people of Alaska have shown themselves Roto be! GOD BLESS THEM! Down here in the lower 48 the OCA buckled down to the World and bent over to accept the Revised Gregorian Calendar. Here we're ashamed of our Russian Orthodox Faith. THERE they adhere to it without question!

Here is an excellent video presentation on the falsely called 'revised-julian' calendar *which is in truth the gregorian calendar* merely retaining the Orthodox Pascha. i am rather polemic when it comes to this issue, so forgive me. but the talk itself is very non-polemic and you can forward it to any friends you have that like to defend the 'new calendar':

also there is a Russian Version of the same talk:

I know this is three years old, but I wanted to say this. How, does what calendar we use is necessary to our salvation? Because you say it like they have committed grand heresy, even though using the same calendar as the rest of the world is like agreeing with the world. By your logic, we should not drink the same water as the world, as if somehow we take some bad spiritual energy from it. Please do not mistake pettiness and pride for piety, as that is the road to perdition. Thank you, and God Bless you

mrdoishiman - That sounds like self-assuredness, not humble honesty about one's own sinfulness or CONSTANT need for Christ, which would lead one to embrace His BODY, The Church, you cannot separate the Incarnate Son from His body, he's not a Ghost or the founder of a philosophy. Without the Eucharist in the Church He founded (over and against all the modern sects founded in the West), no matter how much "head believing" one does, they do not abide in Christ nor have Life in them (John 6:52-58).

Orthodox is mostly Roman , Ottoman and Turkish Culture . Bible is written in Anatolia , so it is mix of Arab culture from Throat and Roman Culture from Anatolia , the Orthodox one must be the root Bible as it is totally includes Anatolian Roman and Ottoman culture , as Orthodox style chanting of music called "Nihavend " has been created in Ottoman's Sultan Fatih time (It is de crease , fates and then in crease to happy end as it express the relive ! , Nihavend's word meaning is Huge Door , and there is a City in Iran with this name ) and Sultan Fatih was also the saver of Orthodoxy as when he conquered Constantinapol and made it Istanbul , he learned that Catholic Church , short time ago , shot down the Orthodox Church and got all it's followers to itself , than Sultan Fatih signed a new Patriarch to Orthodoxy Church and gave it power much more than it had in Byzantine Times , Orthodox church became a Divan member of Ottoman with the Wezir statue , which was the highest position some one can have after Sultan , so all Orthodox Priests started to wear Sultan or Ottoman Soldiers "Yeni Cheri " like head wears as they were the Church of a strong Empire and has a highest position in it , Sultan was even stricter the population of muslims in Istanbul Ottoman started to be sheria muslim after Yavuz Selim but the Power of Orthodox chores lasted to it's last years . There was humors about Sultan Fatih was a Christian , but Fatih was attending both Masque and Church so no one can know the truth . According to Turkish historians Turks were already living an Orthodoxy Islam as Baptize was being performed at homes under the name "Kırklama " , Easter was celebrating under the name of Çiğdem Aşı with the same time and tradition like Christians do painting eggs with onions and visiting neighbors with yellow crocus and eggs in chants . A pan full of wheat , candles on it having an half glasses of water at the center was put in front of the muslim prayer , an incense was fired in front of the ceremony house , no need to mention about our Tree belief , all these Orthodox traditions are performed by Turks from Central Asia to Balkans through Anatolia

I've been to a Russian Orthodox Church... A Saint Hermon's one anyways... I don't want to sound rude, but I was raised to seek after God fully every since I was a boy, I grew up worshiping God through the gifts of the Spirit and music... When I visited the Russian Orthodox Church, I was very depressed and I cried afterwards... Their was no life... and ever since then, I have had a negative view on Orthodoxy. If a church does not have life within the service, then it's just a dead congregation.

Emotional services and inspirational music that also stirs emotions doesn't mean that there is life any more than being exited at a football game makes you a pro football player.
      Emotions are fickle.
Any religion that is directed at man and not God you should question. Never seek entertainment or what you want from God. Focus outside your own desires to God.
