I grew up in Alaska but never heard of him until passing an Orthodox church bearing his name in Hudson Ohio of all places.

Grew up Eastern Orthodox but I'm no longer religious, this almost brought a tear to my eye. To be so dedicated to something is admirable

I did a presentation on the book “Orthodox Alaska: a Theology of Mission” to my “The Church and indigenous peoples” class (canadian catholic university) and gave a detailed history on the Orthodox philosophy of evangelism and the historical occurrences of this, with Sts Cyril and Methodius to the slavs, the russian monastics to the natives in Alaska. It’s all very interesting history, no force, no imposition of language. Rather learning the language and customs, then translating into the local language. And it organically grows in the people. When Alaska was sold, and protestant missionaries came, they did a 180, forcing english, and trying to make the natives into “anglosaxxons”. Saint Herman of Alaska pray for us, in North America that we may be made worthy disciples of Christ, through our lives though we are unworthy to allow the Faith to be spread ❤

That class must have learned nothing and completely dismissed you as, from this comment, you've seemed to completely disregard the fundamental aspects of the colonization of the Alaskan region.

Imagine you live in an isolated society for time immemorial, then suddenly a giant wooden ship bearing beings that bear an oddly different appearance than yours, dressed in alien garb approaches your land with technology and theology beyond your society's understanding. These people must know of a power that could grant such immensely useful items and theistic knowledge, right? This alone creates a giant divide in a society and you're dismissing those who reasonably questioned outside forces primarily focused on the cultivation of this land.
How can you say there was no force while completely skimming over the direct request of St. Herman for defense for the natives against the violent Russian colonists (including the priesthood that he refused to join)? Are you stupid or willfully ignorant? Of course people would side with those who are willing to destroy them. You cannot take the words of those under persecution as gospel. This is not just a flaw on you but the author who is also okay with downplaying the violent aspects of this religious organization.
As for the miracles and teachings of St. Hermain, I believe. However, I am not afraid to look our sins in the face as you are. You have utterly dismissed these people through your blindness and I condemn you for even introducing this thought process to anyone.
As a now getting older history nerd with religious interests, I keep thinking I’ve heard all the stories like this, then you get a very pleasant surprise and discover a story like this. You made my morning, and maybe my week. Thank you!

This is one of the most selfless most humbly beautiful souls I've ever heard of. This story made me cry as a Christian most Christians do not follow Christ the way the Bible says we should we do not love him the way we should we do not pray enough.

Aleksandar - i was actually born in Alaska and my family came to the US from Yugoslavia in the 1950’s. I grew up speaking the language with my grandparents, and I was really fascinated with the region. When I was at university, I spent 6 months living and studying in Belgrade - an awesome experience! One night, I was smoking a cigarette on Kosovska Street, near the parliament. A guy in his late 20’s came up to me and asked if he could borrow my lighter. We got to talking, and somehow it came up that I was from Alaska. He proceeded to tell me all about Hermann and said that he is held in very high regard in Serbia. I had never even heard of Herman before this and I was so surprised!

So divisive and nonsensical in my humble opinion and leads one to see them as simply allegories. It would seem that this decision detracts from all our humanity. I talked to a older man named Rocko that lived there for a time and was also raised as an alter boy in Kodiak at the Orthodox church who talked about the light that was seen when he passed and also a man in Iliamna who told me of the light they saw in the village there, the villagers immediately knew who had passed, and the Mohawk St I mentioned is Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

I lived in Kodiak for a year and missed my chance to see Sprice Island
His primary fest day on August 9th this year was the first time I'd ever been to an Orthodox divine liturgy. His story is beyond inspiring and one of the reasons I want to join the Eastern Orthodox church.
I am beyond moved by the actions of Saint Herman. Thank you Harmony! I am recovering my faith and hope to visit spruce islands before my time arrives!

My indigenous grandfather from Anchor Point AK told me this story from a slight shift in perspective where the natives knew the small sland was in the lee of the larger Kodiak Island and storms blew past it and Herman was trhe only Russian worth saving

Amazing! Please make one on St. Sergius of Radonezh one day, if possible. We wouldn’t have saints like Seraphim of Sarov and Herman of Alaska if it weren’t for him. Heck there wouldn’t be a Slavic Orthodoxy without him.

St. Charbel was one of those. (1828-1898) He was from Lebanon was pretty cool: he prayed for everyone. Muslims even name their children for him today.
Apparently, over 26K miracles are attributed to him, but I just like how he treated folks the same.
@@mortalclown3812 Charbel was a Maronite Catholic who was full of pride and prelest. His Church is built on the bodies of dead Orthodox Christians killed in the Crusades or in the many ethnic conflicts that occur in Lebanon, there is nothing holy about that.

Herman, is a derivation of Hermann which basically means „German“ or „Sir-man“ so he may have been simply a Volge German, nicknamed „the German“.
No it comes from the Greek name Germanus. He was not the first saint with this name, in fact he was named (when he became a monk) after the founder of his monastery, St. Herman of Valaam.

@@Josh-j8e2f its a youtube channel that the creator of this channel ran and almost destroyed before starting this one. its pretty good but they are more focused on stories about hackers/cyberpunky topics and very high quality production budget. Completely different “aesthetic” than this channel but the way they tell stories is very similar
