I’ve heard someone describe Let Down as all of the instruments crying into a beautiful serenade of music. That’s the best description of it I’ve ever heard
When Let Down clicks, it becomes the best song on the album.
definitely agree, it's crushing
The repeat of "One day I am gonna grow wings" makes me wanna sing at the top of my voice.
Referring to it as "prom music" felt like a bizarre comment since for me it's a track that feels so isolated, a harmonic presentation of the precise sorrow that lingers not when a lot has gone wrong but instead when so little is going right. I couldn't imagine something that burns in this emotional way appealing to me on a night designed for fun.
That’s true, I think I meant more sonically than lyrically you know? Somebody who’s never heard the song before and doesn’t know the weight of the lyrics might just find it easy to slow dance to hahaha
@@DougAraujo that's fair. I enjoyed your commentary on the album overall, so I'm not throwing heavy criticism at you. I just found that particular comment at odds with my own view. In terms of initial reaction to the instrumental aspects, with it's gradual, delicate approach I can actually see where you were coming from. I have to bare in mind myself that on my first listen I wasn't moved much by Let Down. Today it might be my favourite ever song.
While In rainbows is great you need to do Kid A next - to follow This up With such a creative departure is not
Only important context to their impact on pop culture … it’s also helps understand the band themselves and their pursuit of art and growth over everything else. okc and IR are my favs but Kid A is the one I respect the most for its integrity , artistic statement and bravery.
Pausing Let Down when you did broke a million Radiohead fans’ hearts.
fr I almost cried when he did it dude
it's cool to live in a time where i can watch someone else react to one of my favorite albums for the first time
And forget that music is still being made 😂
dang you picked up on the last track tying into the first one so well, that's why you're the best Doug!
Thanks so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!!
After years of being obssesed with Radiohead I did not notice that xD That was a good one.
I'm almost certain that Happiness is a warm gun, A day in the life and even The Who were bigger influences than Bohemian Rhapsody...
Spot on. Jonny and Thom have both cited Happiness is a Warm Gun as the key inspiration for Paranoid Android. Kudos to the producer (Nigel Godrich) who spliced three separate ideas together in such a seamless way.
Yeah I’ve heard a lot of fans compare it to Bohemian Rhapsody, but I don’t think the band themselves has ever said the song was inspired by it
"Exit Music (for a Film)" was written for Romeo + Juliet.
There's a great documentary on the tour of this album called MEETING PEOPLE IS EASY. Totally worth watching.
"Exit Music For A Film" was based on the plot of Romeo & Juliet because Baz Lurhman asked them to write a song for his 1996 film version of it (hence "For A Film"). Thom Yorke was always upset by the story because he never understood why Romeo & Juliet didn't just run away together so the lyrics reflect that sensibility which is why the final lyrics have such bitterness to it.
This is an awesome reaction. I’m going to school right now for Music Technology- hopefully working in a studio/with live music, etc. It’s great to hear someone pick out all the production aspects that makes this album so special.
expecting a typical reaction but this was fantastic. it's good you let them flow seamlessly and you didn't pause a lot. not to mention a breakdown and critique you did it perfectly well done.
Thank you! I never know if I need to pausing more or less because you can’t really please everyone in that regard lol sometimes I feel bad talking over the music, but I also feel bad constantly pausing and interrupting it, so I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
I bought this the day it was released, walked to the store in my lunch hour. Back at the office I read the lyrics in the booklet. I was shocked and amazed. I had a crappy boombox. That evening I lay on the floor with it behind my head. I was transfixed. It’s an amazing album. A work of high art beyond anything I’d ever heard before
They get “trippy” in later albums…It has its trippy moments but they embrace that even more down the road. Your only getting started. Very blown out drums… I think (Ministry/ Skinny Puppy?) preceded that blown out sound. I’m sure that others used it…the Beatles even, but you hear it very well on Flaming Lips ‘The Soft Bulletin’, which you should also visit.
They can pull all of it off live; the production, arrangements and execution is just unrivaled. The sonics man, the sonics! Each album is its own universe. Always melancholic, but you feel like you’ve had a good cry or catharsis so I’m always strangely uplifted….and aliens, lots of alien references. That and car crashes. They 8 times out of 10 subvert what you expect next.
Queen is a green touchstone. The kind of record you remember where you were when you first heard it. Do Kid A if you want to get weird, Hail to the Thief if you want to rock, Amnesiac..when you don’t feel good and you don’t know why, In Rainbows for some beautiful version of neo-soul, King of Limbs for total groove pushing boundaries, Moon Shaped Pool -remembrance, The Bends for teenage bliss; Then bust out THE Smile for total prog with a kraut touch. A complete well balanced diet.
Brother, you are a very lucky man to hear this band for the first time. I envy you. I hope you keep listening to more of them, they are different. Nice video!!!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it
Hey. Glad you enjoyed this-it's one of my favorites all-time. Radiohead is one of my favorite bands, and they are the soundtrack to my life. In 2017, they released a 20yr reissue with a second disc of previously unreleased tracks that weren't included in the original, but are worth a listen. Man of war is one of the tracks that I really enjoy.
Love watching you enjoy this album. I wonder if the time signature comment in Let Down is referring to the electric guitar pattern being in 5/8 over the rest of the band’s 4/4. Pretty dang cool how natural they make it feel.
Been a RH listener since '95 and a complete fan since '97, when OKC was released. If I were you I would listen next to their previous release, The Bends, which is a good 90's rock album and allows you to appreciate how their sound evolved so quickly. After that, give OKC another listen and just follow their discography. It's a hell of a journey. I envy you man 😁
It always amazed me that No Surprises was such a hit while being one of the top darkest Radiohead songs. I'm glad more people don't 'get it' because it (...) sucks. When a person -accepts- their final decision they can get a profound feeling of relief, calmness...peace? It's literally all right there.... no alarms (not waking up) and no surprises (no more trauma) please. I find a lot of people are misdirected by the such a pretty house/garden part. Its more of a take on how people will say "oh but look how beautiful everything is! how can you be sad when they house is pretty?! and the yard, you must be so lucky" ....yes. They can see it. Doesn't fix things. Sorry for being so down with this comment....I realy did enjoy your reaction. Great job!
45:42 its funny how you say its a left turn because after this album, Radiohead tuck a complete left turn and made Kid A (an album ranked higher on the rolling stones top 500 albums than OK Computer). They quite literally have the title of "the greatest left turn in music's history".
In exit music (for a film) it’s not really a synth but a mellotron. It’s also what Beatles use in ”strawberry fields” etc. The keyboard trigger small cassette tapes with samples of flutes, strings etc. It’s cool and very much used in 60-70’s prog. :)
Ahhhhh that’s incredible, I love the sound
cant wait for u to see their other albums. theyre such different sounds and it seems like whatever genre radiohead tries to do they can do it perfectly
Great stuff. Found this looking for new Radiohead reactions. Will definitely check out more of your stuff. Their progression musically through the albums is really interesting. Would love to see you dig into In Rainbows down the road. Keep it up!
Saw a magazine's title about radiohead in the 90's: "Punk Floyd". So true.
Enjoyed hearing you discover Ok Computer, and for me a re visit to a massively impactful album
Keep up the good work. It's really a pleasure to her comments from somebody who seems so "educated" in music. Will certainly love to hear your reaction at Dark side of the moon !
Unfortunately that reaction’s a Patreon exclusive since UA-cam blocked the video worldwide :/
That was an amazing concert tour, brilliant gig, The hail to the thief gig was my favourite gig to have attended in Glasgow,
I’ve just rediscovered Radiohead’s music this week; I’m familiar with their hits but All the other songs are amazing! I’m watching their 1994 live at Astoria video. Watch this when you can just enjoy the performance- when they were younger and really rocking out. I haven’t listened to Ok Computer-Where have I been!?!
They were definitely on ecstasy during that gig too, jaws wobbling all over the stage. It's probably why they play so hard.
Hi Doug, may I suggest you listen to their albums in the order they were released following this one? I think you may like how their sound developed and why they are regarded as one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time.
I hope I can join you on your Radiohead journey. Awesome reaction
The Tourist though..? So good.
Indeed it is. A perfect counterweight to the “Airbag” of the opener, with its plea to “slow down”.
Great reaction, i just experienced this album yesterday ❤
Funny you mention Twilight for climbing up the walls, if I remember correctly their movie soundtrack featured some Radiohead. Also I really hope you continue this journey, Radiohead is really what got me into the album format when I first started exploring music. Best discography of all time in my opinion, they really do a fantastic job at switching soundscapes and doing it so tastefully (unlike so many bands who try to venture outside of their sound)
. A band perfect for the masses and for pretentious music heads.
I know one of the Twilight films had the song Hearing Damage which was part of Thom Yorke’s solo project.
@@SilentInferno yep the other was 15 step
I believe:)
Very good react. Excellent work.
The rabbit hole is deep with this band.
They experimented with so much sounds and evolved to music geniuses.
Listen to in rainbows. Or hail to the thief’s
DOUGGGGG U GOTTA DO KID A AND IN RAINBOWS NOW
you should totally do kid a by radiohead next. one of my personal favorite albums of all time
Let Down is constantly voted by Radiohead fans as one of their favorite songs. When you listen to this record a few times, it will unlock. It's not as straight forward as you think. One guitar is in 4/4 and the other is in 5/4. It creates these complex harmonies throughout the song that you probably don't notice the first couple of times through. Then one day, it hits you and suddenly it's your favorite song on the album. It also presents some of the core themes of the record, the alienation, the dissociation with the modern world... "One day I am gonna grow wings from a chemical reaction, hysterical and useless."
Ahh..to have never listened to Radiohead, and listen to them the first time, I so am jealous.
Go chronogically from here
🫡
@@cathalgantley4949he better go back to the bends tho
climbing up the walls is my favorite track on the album
also believe it or not, most people who listen to radiohead don't really like electioneering much. i kind of understand in the context of the album since it's sandwiched between two songs that are very different to it feeling-wise (fitter happier and climbing up the walls). as a standalone song though, i like it a lot. probably would've worked out better towards the beginning of the album
Which is weird because I prefer "Electioneering" to "Airbag."
The wall behind you made me convinced that my PC screen was really dirty
hahahaha I apologize. I'll be decorating soon and the room and walls will look much nicer!
Thanks foe this, its a great album. You shluld check out Thom Yorke and Jonny Gdeenwoods sife project, The Smile. They just released their second album, Wall of Eyes. Its an instant classic. The best rasiihead side project. Genius!
So happy to see some Subterranean Homesick Alien, it's my all time favorite Radiohead song
'In Rainbows' is even better IMO
in radioheads discography? debatable, but to a casual listener who has never listened to Radiohead before? absolutely
@@duffylmao The only song on IR that isnt rlly that accessible is Videotape i'd say
Kid A >>
What this person said
@@duffylmao I totally agree with that you said.
This album, The wall and Moving Pictures are 3 of my favourite records of all time. From beginning to end, just absolute bliss !!!! It's a rare thing when albums don't have a single weak song and flows from start to finish in a cohesive fashion.
They have 4, 10 out of 10 albums IMO, this is one of them..... but I think they're side project The Smile might have just released a 10 out of 10 as well in these last couple of Months, its stunning, they are musical geniuses.
Many people have called this the modern Dark Side of the Moon.
just found your channel.. hopefully you reacted to the Radiohead album that preceded this one, The Bends, because based on your tastes- the songs you really liked on this album- I think it's definitely be more your speed.
Welcome to the mighty, mysterious, wonderful, soul enhancing world of Radiohead.......
Crazy thing, there's basically no consensus on best Radiohead album among fans, most people will probably say one of the 5 albums from OK Computer to In Rainbows but with the possible exception of their first album they are all strong contenders
Damn you're young. Bought this album the exact same week it dropped. Had it on a loop for literally that whole summer and beyond. I was 17.
The lead singer is called Thom Yorke. You should listen to his solo projects, one called Atoms for Peace and the other is called The Smile. The band members of Radiohead are Thom Yorke, Colin Greenwood, Jonny Greenwood (brothers), Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway.
The Smile and Atoms for Peace are not solo projects.
@@thewebadventurer2958 Solo project, side project. Does it really matter how I worded it. I was just suggesting you listen to The Smile and Atoms for Peace that's all. You don't have to be so condescending.
OK Computer is - among its other exceptional aspects - the perfect soundtrack to the original Star Wars. Futuretro!
Martin
Really enjoyed the reaction - amazing you were only just born when the spaceship landed. My advice would be to go via planet Kid A first - it will be a better play out of my life’s journey through Radiohead.
Listen to Let Down again and don’t interrupt yourself. Considered maybe one of their greatest tracks of all time.
Yesssss, Electioneering slaps so fucking hard!! 😭✨
Airbag is my favorite, very underrated imo. Also if you think this is experimental you've clearly seen nothing yet lol this is one of their more conventional album by far.
would love to see you react to Kid A, huge departure from their previous music
Plughole is english for bath/shower drain.
The choir sound in Exit Music (For a Film) is from a Mellotron (an original one, not a synth or sample)
of all the music reaction channels who view this album, you're the one i LEAST expected to have never listened to radiohead before
Growing up in a Christian household with a worship leader for a father who only lets you listen to Christian music will do that to a man lmaooo I’ve only been listening to other music for 10 years, shits crazy
@@DougAraujo wow i been following you for a while but didnt know that, thanks for the insight :)
Yeah man, I’ve got lots of classics to catch up on!
brazil mentioned 50:26
Can't wait for Kid A
Without Radiohead, we don't see bands such as Muse as they are seen today at least. They really opened the door for alot of bands wether they were directly inspired by them or not. Radioheads success helped other bands that were off the normal path boom
Man your gonna love In Rainbows
I'm so curious about your pc motherboard. What product do you use? The sound is really good
lucky is amazing
Let down played.... at Prom?
Exit music for a film - it’s Romeo and Juliet
Let down is the sort of thing you'd here at a Prom, Really.. lol Did you listen to the lyrics.
LOL yeah, he was not paying much attention to the lyrics during Let Down, and I don't blame him he was probably lost in all those beautiful sounds.
I don’t think it was an insult or negative thing, more comment on the soundscape.
i started tweakin when u stopped let down at its climax
13:22 "Happinees warm is a gun" The Beatles ............INSPIRATION
Hope he does In Rainbows one of their best albums
Jumped the gun with Let Down.
Are you Brazilian? His surname is Araújo and I'm from Brazil and this surname is quite common here
This album is a very dark and empty melodic take on the early 2000s and the way the future was (and is) heading. Blew me away in my late teens, doing a computer science degree.
My guy called let down romantic, its literally about how thom feels like he is a let down, like he is hystarical and useless. its one of there saddest songs just based on lyrics. the vibe not as sad, but the lyrics very sadl
I can’t interpret Exit Music as being about anything else but two people taking their own lives, likely by inhalation of car exhaust fumes (“Keep breathing, don’t lose your nerve, I can’t do this alone…and now we are One, in everlasting peace.”) The title and lyrics seem pretty unambiguous to me. No Surprises seems like another final goodbye song, “My final fit, my final bellyache”, literally via “A handshake of Carbon Monoxide.”
Incredibly sad songs.
One huge difference in your musical philosophy to mine, is I don't like to read the lyrics as I'm listening to a song for the first time. I actually think that limits my imagination and the focus on the sonic aspects. Don't try to "make sense" of a song the first time you hear it. Just let it wash over you, so it leaves its impression as an article of sound...then....if you want to carefully study the lyrics and the meaning, go for it, but that way you have a boundless communion the first time with the sound itself.
Ok computer is the bible
Lucky the dog 🐶😊
Please more Radiohead sir!
Of course!
Great great reaction. Highly recommend In Rainbows next
Karma Police reaction was ruined by Pink Floyd questions 😢😅
Let Down, a song about homeless suffering.
"This song can be played at the prom" 😂
Kid A next please
Hype i recommend in rainbows because imo its better, bot to downplay ok computer because it changed everything but in rainbows is just an evolution
Let down is so underrated.
Green day and foo fighters do prom songs, not radiohead
31:20 "A DAY IN THE LIFE " .........The Beatles .....inspiration
Don't go right into In Rainbows please. You gotta go through their experimental ambient phase with them.
You have to React to YEAT-2093 !!!!!
Already did, it’s going on the Patreon in a few minutes and it’ll drop on UA-cam in the near future
The purple text on the blue background was not legible my man. React to In Rainbows next, you will love it.
33:14 "sexi saydi" THE Beatles ..............inspiration
You seriously have to stop saying project. Haha. It's an album.
Do the catalouge, skip pablo honey...
u kinda look like an arabian drake ngl
Lmao? I’m Brazilian hahahaha
@@DougAraujo i know im just playing dude😂
Let down is FAR from straight-forward!!!
Yeah…..In Rainbows is better.
Radiohead has never made anything that wasn’t top notch.
It would be way better if you just did a reaction to the album without the live dumb comments.
I get the sentiment, but I have more fun this way! Thanks for watching
