    I have the Pearl PFP-105 with the wave headjoint and it's a perfect piccolo, especially for a university ensemble! My director said that his ensemble hasn't had a flutist with a high-quality piccolo in a long time so he was so happy that I have one!

    Recalling the process with included input from my then private teacher and playing with a school Gemeinhardt 4SH and my teacher's wood piccolo (forgot the model), I ultimately choose the Gemeinhardt 4P 1) since my lips felt more comfortable with a headjoint with no lip plate on the embouchure hole and 2) I was in both concert and marching band in high school (switch to piccolo in Marching Band during my Junior year after).

    Straight up! Just DON'T play a wood piccolo outside, or ANY wood instrument. If you have a wood piccolo, accept that if you're an indoor/outdoor player, you're gonna need two piccolos. Honestly, you need 2 flutes. You need to play a crappier instrument outside than indoors.
    Go all composite/all plastic imho. Good enough sound for inside/not as loud as the metal. Safe to play outside. You can get buy with one instrument. Especially if it has OMNI pads like the Pearl 105E. Great option for a first piccolo. It will stop you from having to buy two instruments. This is pretty unique to the piccolo, though, and pretty unique to a select few piccolos.
    Other than that, your outside instrument, no matter what it is, should not be your inside instrument. If your student instrument is the only one you have for both purposes, you may have to send it to the shop twice a year. It might be cheaper to buy 2 instruments, even if they are both student. The newer one inside, the older one as the outdoor/beater.
    I showed up to a band camp once and one of my clarinets was marching his Buffet R13 and my piccolo was marching the school's 4W. I took them away. I made them march air horns for a little while until we found the plastic horns in the band closet. Only one of the clarinets got to keep their wood horn outside, and that's because it was irreparably cracked.
    Don't play a wood horn or your good flute outside! Please!

    I love this rich warm stone of the very low register of the flute, specifically from F all the way down. So I figured why don't I try out Alto Flute. So I've been wanting to try Alto Flute for a while now but, before I go start looking for flutes. I would like to research the Alto Flute, a little bit more. I am currently in band now and I absolutely love listening to Professional recordings our Concert Band Music. But I can never find any pieces with Alto Flute featured in the score. I'm curious as to what pieces, Alto flutes would be in and what types of parts (lines) they would play.
    Do you happen to know any Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, or Orchestral pieces that have the Alto Flute in the score, and do you also happen to know any pieces that feature the Solo Alto Flute or Chamber group with Alto Flute, where the Alto Flute plays the main melody regularly and is not constricted to the confines of the low register? Thank you so much for your assistance in this matter.

      I believe Daphnis and Chloe flute section has an alto solo in it after the famous flute solo

    • @fanchon8305
      @fanchon8305 4 роки тому

      It's probably going to a difficult find for regular band (i.e. school band) music to contain alto flute parts. Most composers probably (understandably) believe that average middle/high school students don't often have the more unusual instruments, as they can get quite expensive. Your greatest selection will most likely come from more advanced orchestral pieces, which your band teacher may or may not consider, based on the skill level of the other players in your band.
      If you're looking for something to practice on your own, other than playing your band pieces on the alto (and really, when you're by yourself, it's not an issue), there are Etudes by Keller, Debussy Variations No. 8, Music for Mother Bear (Donals Erb) and others. If the class is advanced enough, there's a nice solo in Holst's The Planets V - Saturn. There are also some very lovely Stravinsky pieces that contain alto - Requiem Canticles - Lacrimosa and Scherzo Fantastique Op. 3. For chamber music, I would look at Benjamin Britten's The Prodigal Son, Op. 81. For a wind ensemble, most flute choir pieces would have parts for both alto and bass flutes.

    I don't play wind instruments because I don't have the lung power for it, but I love the sound of the oboe and piccolo and flute. My favorite instruments are organ oboe piccolo and flute. I am an enthusiastic amateur organist. The smallest pipes on the organ sound like piccolos.

    The Piccolo Flute you have is a C Piccolo, sometimes they can also be pitched in the key of C-sharp (or Db) just by shortening (tuning) them up a half step which have been ideal for band. Guo does make plastic Piccolos. The lowest note on a Piccolo is D above middle C, sometimes piccolos can play down to middle C just by using a C extension joint.

    I am a beginner on the flute so a piccolo is not yet an option but are there any metal (silver) piccolos you would recommend? Also when do you think is the best time to start the piccolo when learning the flute? Would the flute practising be advantaged or disadvantaged? Thanks very much 😀

    • @GinaLuciani
      @GinaLuciani  6 років тому +1

      I would recommend all of the piccs I played in this video. As for time to start the piccolo, it depends on the player. You should feel very comfortable with your flute embouchure before starting piccolo (since you will have to adjust it for piccolo). I would say to ask your teacher for the best time to start piccolo

    Hi! Nice video :) very useful information. I have a question regarding your embouchure, is it to the side like more to the left because it is a special technique or something, or is it because that is simply the way it is for you? :)

    • @GinaLuciani
      @GinaLuciani  6 років тому +3

      Great observation. I get this question a lot actually. Everyone has different embouchures since everyone has different lips. I had what is called a teardrop when I started flute (many young kids have this and I started when I was 4) and so that was the best way for me to make an embouchure at the time. Eventually most of the teardrop went away but my muscles had already developed that way so I didn't change my embouchure. Hope that answers your question :)

    Hi, Gina. Just tried the Lyric, which is a new offering, so glad that you played it here (I like it!). The Pearl PFP165 is also a piccolo with a great tone - do you have any experience with it? I have recently tried the Burkhart Resona (not as nice as the one you played here in your video) and I found the tone to be pitchy and varied greatly across the range of the instrument. I'm torn on buying a mid-level pic or trying to spend a bit more to get to a higher end piccolo like a Yamaha 81/82. Any thoughts?

    • @GinaLuciani
      @GinaLuciani  6 років тому

      Hi Doug. I actually haven't tried the Pearl. I'll have to try that at the NFA convention. I'm not sure where you are in your flute journey, but if you have the money to spend and feel that you sound a lot better on the higher end piccolo then that might be the better choice. I hate to tell people to spend more money, but ultimately, if you will have to upgrade in 2 or 3 years, it actually saves you money to invest now (hope that makes sense!). I'd recommend playing the piccolos for either your flute teacher or at the flute dealer to get a second opinion on what you need at the moment. Let me know if I can help you with anything else :)
