honestly, this is the first "pro reviews cheap flutes" video that doesn't just say "yeah just go and buy a $1000 flute instead" as if anyone looking at an under $100 flute even HAS the money to buy a yamaha It really made it seem like the only way you can even get your feet wet on the flute is if you have a grand just lying around for an instrument you're not even sure you like playing, and it's very discouraging. I really appreciate you actually talking about these flutes as serious options. ...on a completely different note, the Mendini sounded much better lol
Thanks so much! I totally get that many people don't have a lot of money to spend on flutes. I have definitely been there before. However, we can always try to make the best of what we have. I tried to take this philosophy when working on this series. If under $100 is the only option, you can still play the flute and get a decent sound.
He had more upper register issues with the Glory so pick the Mendini. I bought a Mendini Sax and it wasn't very good. A better test would be for an intermediate player to try it. Having a pro play a cheap flute is not a realistic test.
Yes! Thanks so much for the video. Sometimes I kinda tired of hearing that don't buy cheap flute if someone is serious about learning it. So, poor people don't deserve to play flute?! Yet, to me, apart form the tone quality, maybe the response of the flute also matters and sometimes even more to beginners.
At the same time, it’s nice to see that these instruments *can* make an acceptable sound. I’ve gone for a second hand TJ 10XE at the ~$200 price point; partly because I suspect I could get the $200 back for it if playing isn’t for me. But it’s really nice to see that even a sub-$100 flute can sound really quite beautiful in the hands of a pro.
Am going to be the odd one out here and say that while the Mendini sounded more refined and polished, I preferred the sound of the Glory. It was cooler-toned to me, a little more haunting. But you played both beautifully, thank you for this very helpful video!
This makes my day! My hope for this video is that people would be able to come to their own conclusions from the side-by-side play test. Mendini Hands down. The tone s richer. 4 years in HS band 2nd chair. The band always tuned to my C. Now at 55 I want to play again for my "smokers" lines, my lung capacity, my mental well-being and a self improvement challenge. This time I hope to make 1st chair!
First I preferred the Mandini. After a while I thought the Glory was better in the low register. After listening a little more I will prefer the Mandini. It is amazing that it is possible to produce such flutes for the low price.

I’m learning to play the Flute and I wanted a Flute that was good but cheap since I don’t have the money right now to buy a thousand dollar flute. So watching the three videos really helped me. I was considering buying the Glory flute but changed my mind when I heard the Mendini Flute. I’m trying to learn the flute so I could join my high school marching band so I wanted to get the one with a better tone. And the Mendini also had an open hole version.
Definitely Mendini for me! I was shocked at the sound of that one altogether. The Glory one to me sounds a bit airy even after the adjustments you made. I had to help one of my niece's friends with her flute 'not working'. I would warn to check for anything sticking that shouldn't be as well as springs that are out of place or not even there. My niece's friend's flute all had just a couple loose screws and one screw that was tightened a bit too much on the D#/Eb right pinky key where it was barely moving freely. All in all, Mendini by Cecilio has improved since I first heard of the brand. Would I use it if I was a professional flutist? NO! The brand now has become a good brand as an 'intro to flute' type of brand.
Thank you so much for this review! When I was in jr. high, I was in marching band and played the clarinet. In the last few weeks, I keep getting the feeling that I am to pick up the flute and learn it proficiently. I have watched both your Mendini and Glory reviews separately and even had my husband listen to you play both. I am looking to make my flute purchase by the end of this week (12/10/2023) and honestly, both have a great, distinct tone. Glory is definitely more stable but warmer while Medini has a really amazing sound that you would hear a flutist playing in an orchestra. Both also seem to come with their own set of pros and cons.
I agree with the comment that Gabe C. had a few months back. I really appreciate the efforts you've gone to in order to actually review the flutes for what they are - which is bargain basement beginner flutes. Too many of the self-styled experts/teachers/players just point their finger at the instrument they're *cough* reviewing, and dump all over it. You obviously put a lot of thought into the true use points of these flutes, and tailored the review for that. Will they replace a hand crafted Muramatsu "James Galway" special? No. But both of the flutes you reviewed will certainly get someone through their first year of Junior High (Middle School) band, or even just some re-education. Really, they sound no worse than my Gemeinhardt. How instruments have changed in 40 years. Over the years, I've lost track of how many little bottles of oil I used on my instruments, how many screws were adjusted back and forth (or replaced), the head joint crown, and so forth - I definitely put my vote towards a video on "Basic things to look at on your flute". As well as what you _shouldn't_ do yourself, such as glue the screw heads in place. Or expect that any glue on a pad will be anything more than a 'get me through the night' fix.

The Mendini has a nice, warm tone. The Mendini did seem to struggle just a tiny bit in the high register. Although the Mendini sounded the best. I was listening with noise canceling headphones. 😂 Give yourself more credit! What kind of flute do you play? It's probably all silver tubing...? Trust me, you can tell the difference with the precious metal content. However, I just wanted to show that these cheap flutes actually can sound good with a little TLC!
@@LanceSuzuki actually I just bought a bamboo flute at a thrift store about a month ago and I really like it. I'm still working on consistently producing a clean tone.
I haven't played a flute in YEARS and have been wanting to pick it up again, but don't want to invest heavily just yet. Both sound wonderful, and the Glory had the better tone in the lower range, but I really liked the warmth of the Mendini in the upper range. Mid range both were comparable. Thank you. I'll probably purchase the Mendini and start from the almost beginning again!

I got the Mendini for free on Amazon a while back. I thought it was a “throwaway “ unto I saw your review so I took it to a flute repair shop to check things out as much as possible (loose screws, etc) and he was surprised at the sound as well. I think he thought it would have a terrible sound given the price.

Lance Suzuki yes I did ! For applying for their credit card. The amount off that I received covered the entire price of the Mendini flute. Since I have the Cecilio viola that has served me well I gave the flute a try. I agree with others that the Mendini has the warmer tone. Also... you could play a carrot and make it sound beautiful!😂

Music-making should ideally be open to all, but, sadly, the price of a lot of "student" or "entry-level" orchestral instruments will put them out of reach of many. So, it's nice to see playable sub-$100 instruments getting fair, intelligent reviews.
I have yet to pick a side yet, as I'm still listening and wishing to pick one that feels right to me But as I listen to you play both of them I realized something while reading comments below The glory does have that almost haunting tone, yet as you play it feels to me like it plays to sort of move around you, to try to become the air on the crowd so to say Where as the mendini is slightly sharper and focused, more of a push into you, like you bumped into someone as you walk by them, it tends to push your focus rather than have this envelope feeling, more of a I'm the focus here eyes on me feeling.... Idk if either description makes much sense, but I feel if I play mendini I would wish to solo play and try to entice and excite listeners like at a rally for a race (maybe nothing that big lol) Where as if I played glory I think I would wish to try to play to the heart and try to show emotion and connection to them, wanting to show it's ok to be there even if your not as focused as mendini or as energetic as a race rally, more like watching a campfire burn with friends around the fire.... I think this video may have me bend to want to get myself a glory, but I'll need more flute research before I finalize it, maybe next time I see your videos (I subscribed to you as you yourself have a more welcome tone that invites those to open up) I'll possibly update you if I ever make a choice and wether I regret or not Thank you for your time and effort and I hope I make my own correct choice for my own possible flute
I ended up buying a Glory open holed B-foot with all the things. I've had it over a year and I love it. Will I upgrade to a more expensive flute? Probably at some point, definitely if I keep playing. But as it is now, this one suits me well. I keep it out on a stand and that reminds me to practice, it's not hugely expensive so if I have to replace it I can. I pick it up multiple times to practice something. Finger placement. Scales. Or fingering on a piece of music im working on. Just small technical things that I can do when I would otherwise be scrolling aimlessly on my phone. And when I actually have a window where I can practice/play then I can focus on tone and that because some of the brain work has already been done. I have at least 300 hours of play time on it total and everything is holding up well, and as I improve my technique it sounds better almost each time I pick it up. Lol. The B-foot with the gizmo really stabilizes that high C well. Also have taught myself how to make the key adjustments (cause if you learn an instrument you should be able to perform some minor maintenance if you want to keep playing and I got too aggressive with a polishing cloth and popped a couple springs out of place which would have made this impossible to play) . At this point if the repair place won't work on it for a pad change or cork change because it's a "cheap flute" I'll gladly save my repair money and do it myself.
Just a warning, he can definitely make these sound better than you probably can. I have not tried these but recently upgraded from a Nuvo to Geminhardt and the Gemeinhardt is much easier to play in tune consistently. Someone who has been playing for a long time will compensate for intonation problems. For the record I still like my Nuvo because it is lighter, can get wet, and unbreakable. Playing the Gemeinhardt has helped my tone on both though because my embrasure seems to settle in the correct position easier and I can transfer that to the Nuvo. All that said I'm sure these 70$ flutes are probably as good as multiple hundred dollar flutes 20 years ago.
You're definitely right that there is some skill involved. However, in this experiment, my playing is the constant and the flutes are the variables. I am not treating these flutes any differently than I would a $700, $7000 or $20,000 flute. You will have to take my word that I didn't make any crazy adjustments for intonation or tone above anything that I would do on a fine instrument.
My feeling is: Glory - more possibilities for tone color and the general sound is bigger and warmer but it is much less refine and a rougher sound. Mendini - More closed off sound and not many possibilities but it is a clearer and more refine sound. I prefer the glory flute.
This is great my old flute died a few years back and our music store closed. I’ve been looking for something to just have and it’s the perfect price for dabbling and getting back into it. The mendini sounded beautiful for the price like someone else said, richer fuller tone and better high pitched sounds.

Thank you for these videos. They are really helping me in my effort to purchase a flute for my 4th grade granddaughter to use at school. However, I wish on this last video that you would have compared the Glory to the Mendini before you made the adjustments that you said made the Mendini sound better as there is no way I would be able to make any adjustments to a flute. In any case, I don’t think there is enough of a difference for it to matter. But I will buy the Glory because you didn’t have to adjust it as much to make it sound that good. Thanks again!
My first flute was a Mendini, it was actually good for a beginner but after a year or two, it sort of fell apart and wasn't matching my skill level anymore (if that makes sense). I don't remember the exact problem but I think it had some loose screws so the keys were falling apart- I managed to fix it myself but it kept unscrewing over time. I took the whole thing apart after I got a new one :p
these videos really helped my decision. the mendini sounded better, but for my needs i think i will choose to get a glory. it was really cool to hear them side by side.
Honestly, these are not bad at all. I was listening but not watching the screen and forgot I was listening to cheap flutes. I have a semi-professional flute, but I'd definitely get one of these as a backup or for questionable playing conditions.
The flute was my first instrument at 13 years old, haven't touched it since probably about 15. Im 28 now and just chose the Mendini because of this video. You're never too late to learn an instrument.
The mendini has a warmer, tighter sound, which is lovely in its own right. The glory, however, has a more airy and playful vibe. In my opinion, it's like comparing singing styles, right? For more traditional/folk pieces I would choose the glory. For something a little more modern and refined, the mendini might better lend to the result one might want.
I've watched many comparisons of different flute brands - mostly of higher-priced models, and I don't think the tone quality of any of those were as good as the ones that Lance just demonstrated, but that is probably because of the player, not the instrument. I am a flute player. I liked both of the flutes, but, again, that's probably because Lance was playing them. Hey Lance, do you give online lessons?

The Mendini sounds remarkably good for the price, especially considering the quality of some of the other instruments they make. Your playing makes one wonder why anyone would spend more than $100 on a flute.

Lance Suzuki I’ve only had my flute since approx March this year, it’s a second hand Trevor James 10x something, can’t remember without looking, and I’m finding it hard to slur between low and high registers? If that makes sense, the notes aren’t clean, and I end up pushing too much air through, I think,to reach the higher note as it gets a lot louder, lol!. Like I say I’m a complete novice really, and an impatient one as I just want to be able to play something. I have found some Gariboldi flute exercises here on UA-cam that I practice with, but other than my original first Tune a day book, I don’t know where to go from there. 🤷♀️. Also I need to learn the theory side of music too . I just love messing around with it, I’ve always wanted to play flute and it’s my one regret in life. Could you give me any advice on practice pieces/books to get or exactly what I should be practicing please? Thank you 🙏
Hi, I just bought an open hole Glory flute. I used to play but haven't played in years. I'm wondering if you have any experience with the open hole version of Glory's line? Now that the Mendini is around the price of $110; do you believe that the flute is still one of the best on the market for this price point or do you believe there is another flute around this price range that does better?

the Mendini def has a more vibrant lower register. I can hear the harmonics better with the mendini but the glory is a little brighter which will probably sound better to blend in elementary and middle school band.
I`m not a flutist, but I preferred the mendini for Its clear and richer sound, Even though they sound almost the same. The glory lacks a little bit fines specially in the high notes.
Yes sir mendini is much good than glory it sounds very well. And I also think that there is an airy sound in the glory which is very minute but seems like making sound in mendini is too much easy and no airy sound is there. Preferably the Mendini flute is the better choice.

If we are able to get a used Student Bundy or Gemeinhardt for the same price as the cheap Amazon one, which is preferred? They say the Bundy and Gemeinhardt 2SP are in "Good" condition. Are used, older branded ones better than new cheaper ones? Thank you.
Hi Gina, This is an excellent question. However, there isn’t really a good answer because it really depends on the actual instrument. I would not buy Bundy (even though my first flute was a Bundy). Gemeinhardt could be okay depending on how old it is and the condition. Regardless, those flutes are not necessarily made for resale. I have a Buescher from the 1980s and it’s not the best flute. But it’s still playable now whereas I bet these Amazon flutes won’t be usable in 35 years.

The Mendini was actually fun for me to play and I think it has some nice tone colors in it.

I haven't played a flute in YEARS and have been wanting to pick it up again, but don't want to invest heavily just yet. Both sound wonderful, and the Glory had the better tone in the lower range, but I really liked the warmth of the Mendini in the upper range. Mid range both were comparable. Thank you. I'll probably purchase the Mendini and start from the almost beginning again!
I'd choose the mandini too, because I prefere the warmer and clearer sound. The lack of quality in both shows most in the high register in my opinion.
I agree high register is where the problem starts for me.

I got the Mendini for free on Amazon a while back. I thought it was a “throwaway “ unto I saw your review so I took it to a flute repair shop to check things out as much as possible (loose screws, etc) and he was surprised at the sound as well. I think he thought it would have a terrible sound given the price.

Lance Suzuki yes I did ! For applying for their credit card. The amount off that I received covered the entire price of the Mendini flute. Since I have the Cecilio viola that has served me well I gave the flute a try. I agree with others that the Mendini has the warmer tone. Also... you could play a carrot and make it sound beautiful!😂
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. Music-making should ideally be open to all, but, sadly, the price of a lot of "student" or "entry-level" orchestral instruments will put them out of reach of many. So, it's nice to see playable sub-$100 instruments getting fair, intelligent reviews.

But as I listen to you play both of them I realized something while reading comments below
The glory does have that almost haunting tone, yet as you play it feels to me like it plays to sort of move around you, to try to become the air on the crowd so to say
Where as the mendini is slightly sharper and focused, more of a push into you, like you bumped into someone as you walk by them, it tends to push your focus rather than have this envelope feeling, more of a I'm the focus here eyes on me feeling....
Idk if either description makes much sense, but I feel if I play mendini I would wish to solo play and try to entice and excite listeners like at a rally for a race (maybe nothing that big lol)
Where as if I played glory I think I would wish to try to play to the heart and try to show emotion and connection to them, wanting to show it's ok to be there even if your not as focused as mendini or as energetic as a race rally, more like watching a campfire burn with friends around the fire....
I think this video may have me bend to want to get myself a glory, but I'll need more flute research before I finalize it, maybe next time I see your videos (I subscribed to you as you yourself have a more welcome tone that invites those to open up) I'll possibly update you if I ever make a choice and wether I regret or not

I ended up buying a Glory open holed B-foot with all the things. I've had it over a year and I love it.
Will I upgrade to a more expensive flute? Probably at some point, definitely if I keep playing.
But as it is now, this one suits me well.
I keep it out on a stand and that reminds me to practice, it's not hugely expensive so if I have to replace it I can.
I pick it up multiple times to practice something. Finger placement. Scales. Or fingering on a piece of music im working on. Just small technical things that I can do when I would otherwise be scrolling aimlessly on my phone.
And when I actually have a window where I can practice/play then I can focus on tone and that because some of the brain work has already been done. I have at least 300 hours of play time on it total and everything is holding up well, and as I improve my technique it sounds better almost each time I pick it up. Lol. The B-foot with the gizmo really stabilizes that high C well. Also have taught myself how to make the key adjustments (cause if you learn an instrument you should be able to perform some minor maintenance if you want to keep playing and I got too aggressive with a polishing cloth and popped a couple springs out of place which would have made this impossible to play) . At this point if the repair place won't work on it for a pad change or cork change because it's a "cheap flute" I'll gladly save my repair money and do it myself.
Just a warning, he can definitely make these sound better than you probably can. I have not tried these but recently upgraded from a Nuvo to Geminhardt and the Gemeinhardt is much easier to play in tune consistently. Someone who has been playing for a long time will compensate for intonation problems. For the record I still like my Nuvo because it is lighter, can get wet, and unbreakable. Playing the Gemeinhardt has helped my tone on both though because my embrasure seems to settle in the correct position easier and I can transfer that to the Nuvo. All that said I'm sure these 70$ flutes are probably as good as multiple hundred dollar flutes 20 years ago.
You're definitely right that there is some skill involved. However, in this experiment, my playing is the constant and the flutes are the variables. I am not treating these flutes any differently than I would a $700, $7000 or $20,000 flute. You will have to take my word that I didn't make any crazy adjustments for intonation or tone above anything that I would do on a fine instrument.

My feeling is:
Glory - more possibilities for tone color and the general sound is bigger and warmer but it is much less refine and a rougher sound.
Mendini - More closed off sound and not many possibilities but it is a clearer and more refine sound. I prefer the glory flute.

This is great my old flute died a few years back and our music store closed. I’ve been looking for something to just have and it’s the perfect price for dabbling and getting back into it. The mendini sounded beautiful for the price like someone else said, richer fuller tone and better high pitched sounds.

Thank you for these videos. They are really helping me in my effort to purchase a flute for my 4th grade granddaughter to use at school. However, I wish on this last video that you would have compared the Glory to the Mendini before you made the adjustments that you said made the Mendini sound better as there is no way I would be able to make any adjustments to a flute. In any case, I don’t think there is enough of a difference for it to matter. But I will buy the Glory because you didn’t have to adjust it as much to make it sound that good. Thanks again!
My first flute was a Mendini, it was actually good for a beginner but after a year or two, it sort of fell apart and wasn't matching my skill level anymore (if that makes sense). I don't remember the exact problem but I think it had some loose screws so the keys were falling apart- I managed to fix it myself but it kept unscrewing over time. I took the whole thing apart after I got a new one :p

Honestly, these are not bad at all. I was listening but not watching the screen and forgot I was listening to cheap flutes. I have a semi-professional flute, but I'd definitely get one of these as a backup or for questionable playing conditions.
I purchased the Glory about 3 years ago because it was on sale; However, I preferred the Mendini for sure.
I prefer the precision in all the registers of the Mendini. It also sounds less airy.
I have zero knowledge about flute. But I’m fascinated about them. And always wanted to be able to how to play.

The flute was my first instrument at 13 years old, haven't touched it since probably about 15. Im 28 now and just chose the Mendini because of this video. You're never too late to learn an instrument.

The mendini has a warmer, tighter sound, which is lovely in its own right. The glory, however, has a more airy and playful vibe. In my opinion, it's like comparing singing styles, right? For more traditional/folk pieces I would choose the glory. For something a little more modern and refined, the mendini might better lend to the result one might want.

I've watched many comparisons of different flute brands - mostly of higher-priced models, and I don't think the tone quality of any of those were as good as the ones that Lance just demonstrated, but that is probably because of the player, not the instrument. What concepts/skills are you finding the most challenging right now?
Lance Suzuki I’ve only had my flute since approx March this year, it’s a second hand Trevor James 10x something, can’t remember without looking, and I’m finding it hard to slur between low and high registers? If that makes sense, the notes aren’t clean, and I end up pushing too much air through, I think,to reach the higher note as it gets a lot louder, lol!. Like I say I’m a complete novice really, and an impatient one as I just want to be able to play something. I have found some Gariboldi flute exercises here on UA-cam that I practice with, but other than my original first Tune a day book, I don’t know where to go from there. 🤷♀️. Also I need to learn the theory side of music too . I just love messing around with it, I’ve always wanted to play flute and it’s my one regret in life. Could you give me any advice on practice pieces/books to get or exactly what I should be practicing please? Thank you 🙏

How does the lazarro flute compare to the mendini and glory flutes
Hi, I just bought an open hole Glory flute. I used to play but haven't played in years. I'm wondering if you have any experience with the open hole version of Glory's line? This video is now 2 years old, so I'll understand if you don't see this comment. My mom's flute was an Armstrong open hole with a silver head but I don't have it anymore 💔
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to try the open holed one. However, I imagine that it would be similar to the closed hole.
Now that the Mendini is around the price of $110; do you believe that the flute is still one of the best on the market for this price point or do you believe there is another flute around this price range that does better?

This is helpful, i was wanting to just buy a cheaper flute for outside concerts, i have better flutes, but want one for outside, i like the Mendini i think
the Mendini def has a more vibrant lower register. I can hear the harmonics better with the mendini but the glory is a little brighter which will probably sound better to blend in elementary and middle school band.

I`m not a flutist, but I preferred the mendini for Its clear and richer sound, Even though they sound almost the same. The glory lacks a little bit fines specially in the high notes.
Is the third register intonation fine? I have another off brand called muslady and it's rather out of tune up there.

Yes sir mendini is much good than glory it sounds very well.
And I also think that there is an airy sound in the glory which is very minute but seems like making sound in mendini is too much easy and no airy sound is there.

I have a Buescher from the 1980s and it’s not the best flute. But it’s still playable now whereas I bet these Amazon flutes won’t be usable in 35 years.
