Will be 66 in Oct(2018), and proud to still be a hippie.....the music is still mesmerizing, gives me an inner peace....maybe walking on a beach, full moon just above the horizon, a taste of the salt air on a warm breeze......tokin on a just enough Panama Red.......the frosting on the cake!-----------just my 2 cents. Live long, Fred....even though I don't know you, I have a peaceful, easy feeling that you are alright in my book. Keep on rockin brother!!! Later.

Melanie and her music are still very special to us both after all these years. I remember hearing her for the first time on late night commercial radio that played underground stuff. I went and bought 'Born to Be' and that was the start of a life long love affair. Saw her live at the Isle of Wight and she was singing as the sun came up on that Sunday morning. That moment is very precious and I think it was the most magical experience I've ever had.

My heart, my soul, were so tragically mauled when I came back from the Nam, that I would never have guessed I would live to old age. US cities were burning, what few heroes left to me had bean assassinated, and hate washed into every crevice of society. It wuz a time of unspeakable tragedy. And yet, there wuz a a wave of writers and performers that not only found their voice in expressing the delima of those days by speaking to what some of us could only feel, but solidly put the light on those tragedies. Thatz why I survived my own terrified youth.

Wish I could find a good book
Will if I could find a real good book
I'd never have to come out and look at
What they've done to my song
La da da da da da da da
La da da da da da da da
La da da da da da da da
La da da da da da
Look what they've done to my song
But maybe, it'll all be all right, ma
    Maybe, it'll all be okay
Well, if the people are buying tears
    I'll be rich someday, ma
Look what they've done to my song
Ils ont change ma chanson, ma
    Ils ont change ma chanson
C'est la seule chose que je peuz faire
Et ce n'est pas bon, ma
    Ils ont change ma chanson
Look what they've done to my song, ma
Look what they've done to my song, ma
Well, they tied it up in a plastic bag
    Turned it upside down, ma
Look what they've done to my song
Ils ont change ma chanson, ma
    Ils ont change ma chanson
C'est la seule chose que je peuz faire
Et ce n'est pas bon, ma
    Ils ont change ma chanson
Look what they've done to my song, ma
Ma, look what they've done to my song
It's the only thing I could do all right
And they turned it upside down, oh ma
Look what they've done to my song

Childhood memories of hippy teachers who'd all just returned from the hippy trail to India, playing the guitar and singing in class with another brewing every variety of tea imaginable after returning from visiting Sai Baba's ashram and instructing us in meditation.
The school play even used Pink Floyd albums as backing tracks. (To this day I wonder if someone sat there next to the volume switch to edit out the swearing !)
Melanie sums up that entire period for me.

This gal was so hip back in her day! Her vocals were sublime, she was totally gorgeous looking, she was highly intelligent, and here's the best bit - she never ever took herself too seriously. That's why today's gals just so can't match her.

Really, that's a stupid comment. Why today's gals just can't match her? What is the point of that comment? And who says Melanie didn't take herself seriously? Of course she did. She was a serious musician. You think you're complimenting her, but it's really an insult. Here's a clue: women musicians, including today's, take their work seriously.

I met Melanie after her concert in Passaic NJ. My buddy Jerry Sasso opened a restaurant-hang-out in the vicinity and there she was joining us as if she was part of our little world. The music brings back a lot of memories.

Melanie Safka--face of an angel. Voice that belongs with a guitar and a campfire. Woodstock, Powder Ridge Rock Festival, Strawberry Fields Festival and the Ilse of Wight Festival. She was a shooting star in the late 60s through the 70s. Nobody seems to know how to make music like that anymore.
