  • The police were called to an Essex council meeting after an argument over whether to stand during a minute’s silence for the late Tory MP Sir David Amess.
The Maldon District Council forum descended into chaos on Thursday night, prompting councillors to walk out in protest and abandon the agenda.
At one point an elected representative cried, “you have no authority over me”, after the chairman asked him to leave, as insults of “idiot” were hurled.
The scenes drew parallels to the disorder faced by Jackie Weaver during a Handforth Parish Council meeting in February which became a viral sensation online.
The row flared at the beginning of the Maldon meeting when a member challenged the decision to remain seated during a minute’s silence to remember Sir David, the MP for nearby Southend West who was stabbed to death.
