Thanks for the shout-out as always! I'm so glad the WAGO connectors are working so well. Also, glad you did feeders on both ends of every switch, perfect improvement for reliability at slow speeds. Never worry about making mistakes on your railroad, model railroads are living documents and should be consistently iterated/improved. It's always SO COOL to see this layout come together.

I painted the windows inside and out. Then used Tuck Tape and covered one side. Then mixed small amounts of epoxy. I used epoxy dye to make different colors. Then took a toothpick and place different colors in each little square and then finish the rest off with clear. Makes it look like different panes were replaced over the years.

You could hang a small shelf above the switching knobs to prevent the catching. I often find it very handy to have a small ridge in front of the layout to put things on when your working it.
For those three knobs itself you could do a white striped pattern on a black base. Every track it’s own stripe and then paint the corresponding stripe (the track that contains the operated switch) red f.e.
Hope that makes a bit of sense, because I’m not a native to english, sorry 😬

Safety yellow knobs would look pretty good, especially with a dark fascia

Dear Approach Medium, cool vid. Love the way you show your work.
On the Bullfrog buttons; when you’re going to airbrush ‘m, maybe be it’s a good idea to put a turnout symbol on ‘m for their direction and a small colored dot for the thru route.
Think your water attempt is already looking pretty good, at least on the video. Some more GAC500 will do the job.
On the Walthers’ industrial kitbash, opening up the structure may add another dimension to the layout.
Getting the window apertures to look better may indeed be a challenge. Of course you may be able to do this with styrene. Nevertheless, to figure out the how and what paper may be just as useful and effective.
    Cheerio

Color coding the switch pulls can be as simple as a black line for the track position and and light colour for the rest of the knob.
The furthest switch will have the black line on the top most of the knob, the nearest track will have the black at the knob's bottom, and the middle track will have the black line I'm the knob's middle with the higher colour on the top and bottom.
Great layout as the workload is varied and manageable. 😊

Wow, I’ve never heard of anyone else modeling the New York Cross Harbor. I’m really looking forward to seeing your progress on this layout!

Your video makes me homesick. 😢
For 25+ years I lived in walking distance of that railroad. And before that, while I was attending Xaverian, that was the first railroad I railfanned.

Great work so far! Looking forward to following your progress! Given your NYC Setting, if you DONT wind up color coding those 3 bullfrog knobs, painting them yo look like rivets could be a fun way to extend the setting of your layout onto the fascia. Just a suggestion! Thanks for sharing!

So many details and nice weathering! Took me a second to realize it is N scale.

Idea: add some kind of small particular scenery next to each switch, like a tuft of grass, a rock, or some kind of piece of scrap metal scenery. And then, on each knob, have little depictions that correspond to the tiny little detail pieces and their corresponding switch

Wonderful progress Approach! Keep up the good work. Wonderful routes you make including my favorite, the Hudson and Western.

Nice layout. I haven't touched my real N-scale models in 20 years. My Atlas/Kato RS-3s never ran particularly well back then and tended to stall when running in reverse. Your large number of feeders is an excellent idea given the number of switches and sidings on this kind of layout. As you know, it's places like that where the locos always stall and need help from the big hand from above.

Fantastic layout I look forward to seeing it progress. If you don't know who big Bill is he also models this area on his South Brooklyn Railroad. He also worked this area as a motorman. He is a fantastic resource.

If you find the best location for any buildings is on your joint(s), you could just put it on a base that is removable.
    Anyway, nice layout!

on your locomotive that has troubles in one direction, check your gauge of each wheel. one of wheelsets is probably too narrow or too wide. Great start on your layout though!

Could be the same as the numbers, but maybe F, B, M for front, back, middle?

Maybe place a track diagram on the fascia with the turnout being controlled above the knob.

  • @jamesolthof8286

Make a schematic on the fascia and either paint or number the turnouts on the schematic and the switch machine to correspond with each other
