The oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a species of fish from the cichlid family known under a variety of common names, including tiger oscar, velvet cichlid, and marble cichlid. In tropical South America, where the species naturally resides, A. ocellatus specimens are often found for sale as a food fish in the local markets. The fish has been introduced to other areas, including China, Australia, and the United States. It is considered a popular aquarium fish in Europe and the U.S

I had an aquarium when I was young. It had guppies, zebras, neons, mollies, and a few other types. Then I went to a big department store pet department in Pittsburg and the salesperson talked me into buying a small Oscar. I took it home and dumped it in the tank and it started eating all my other fishies almost immediately...lol

Yup, to some extent. I guess it depends on the type of fish you are keeping and the environment. Ideally, you have more control of the water temp if you keep an aquarium, especially if you live in a very cold place. :)

Do you heat the pond? I think an Oscar pond is a fantastic idea since if you have more than one they just get too big for the average tank. It makes me want to set up a pond for my Oscars.

In the phillipines the coldest it gets is 25 Celsius and that's very rare you would need to worry more about the heat than the cold

My pond is 6feet x 4feet and it is 20 inch deep. Those are juvenile cichlids, I somewhat connected 2 ponds and they share the same biological filter. :)

Yeah, I never had a jaguar because they have a very bad reputation of eating smaller fish!!!! Maybe better to separate both and wait for the oscar to grow..... Happy fish-keeping!

would you kind share inputs on the filtration system? particularly on how you deal with Oscar waste, did you syphon clean regularly or work on some other magic? mines are poop machines, wanna figure out a good way before I putting them into my pond

They do fight occasionally, but not as much as if they are in a small environment. I think if they are in a fairly large tank/pond then it lessens their aggression.
Territorial disputes are the main cause for oscar fight...... This one is a large pond with lot of hiding spaces.... Lucky oscar.... Luckier than mine....

Im surprise they aren't chasing and eating the small fish.
I have noticed that they get tired easily. They do not bother chasing the small fish because they pond is big enough for the small fish to easily escape.....PLUS, my oscars are LAZY FISH!!! LOL
They should be harmless so long as they are not starving.

Yes. I had them when they were a little-over-an-inch long. Then they were transferred to various tanks because they keep on growing! haha

Ahhhhhhhmmmmmm, not really. I would imagine that you know what you're doing since you decided to upgrade to a pond. So long as you are enjoying the hobby, you're good!!!! :)
