    Now I want to make pants next. I stopped sewing many years ago when life got so busy with family and their activities. Then came grandchildren and taking care parents which was a blessing. Now the house is quiet and I have plenty of time on my hands so, I decided to return to sewing and sewing techniques are quickly returning. I am loving it. Now my family is going to get annoyed when I keep giving them clothes.
    Thank you so much for your informative channel. You always have a smile on your face and I love the way you include your family in your videos. BTW, I love what you are wearing. Great colorful print.

    Good grief! Wasteful fabric police? You addressed that issue with finesse. I say, fabric flags strung up high. Seriously, this is another great video, Vivmom. You're an excellent teacher. I'm learning so much as a newbie. And you're right, basics/foundations of anything/sewing is key. I appreciate your videos and your healthy attitude.

      People that spread plastic packages and palstic trash into the environment are a real problem, not sewing people with their straps of fabric.

      Talk about wasteful fabric. Joann’s throws away tons of fabric. By the bins. You can do whatever you want. I will never understand how people can be so negative. Your videos really help people. Delete everything negative.

    I know that this video is very old. But I like the way you commented when you said not your exact word but you can do what you want to do with your fabric when you buy it. Your videos are entertaining as well as educational and I enjoy them. People should keep their criticism if it's not constructive to themselves. I sew the way I was taught when I was growing up by my sister. Don't intend to change. I think your videos are warm friendly and real keep them coming

  • @dianajerzak2078

    Two suggestions: 1. You can actually sew the pockets when you sew up the side seams if you wish. Just stop where you want to start the pocket, backtack then continue the curve of the pocket without stopping. 2. You can also take a scrap of fabric and use it as a "leader" if you will. The threads are caught on the leader piece (it can be any fabric) and will not grab your garment and wad it into a big thread knot. Love watching your videos!

    • @jau2552
      @jau2552 5 років тому +1

      Diana Jerzak: thank you for your points. Point 1 - I was wondering about that exact thing, to stitch all at once; thank you for that option. Point 2 - so then if you do that, how do you get rid of the scrap leader fabric after sewing your seam, without taking the seam apart? Sorry I don’t understand that one.

    • @dianajerzak2078
      @dianajerzak2078 5 років тому +3

      You take a scrap of fabric ( any fabric) and sew across it and then feed in your fashion fabric after you get to the end of the scrap. It will hang like a little tag before your fabric that then you cut off ( there should be one or two stitches between this little piece of fabric and your garment). That way, your thread is on the piece of fabric and you won't have your machine eat your fabric. Usually when you quilt, you just feed each pair of fabrics in repetitively (chain piecing) that does the same thing, but in garment sewing, it is usually just one pair of fabrics at a time. Am I making it any more clear? If you watch a quilt video, you can see them chain piecing...this is a modified version of that.

    • @jau2552
      @jau2552 5 років тому +3

      Diana Jerzak: oh now I get it - it LEADS your fabric through the sewing machine but does not get stitched to the fabric. Oh wow this is awesome explanation; thanks bunches! And also what a great idea.

She doesn't have a whole lot of time because she works full time and has her granddaughter on the weekends. I am happy because of watching you will try to sew a little dress. Thank you Viv. Most of the time you can prevent fabric eating machine problems by holding both threads when you start sewing. I just wrap the threads around my finger. As we get older our fingers get dry.

      I was in the sewing aisle of Fred Meyer, the other day, and saw a young woman with a man (husband?) standing by. She sheepishly crouched down to the bottom shelf, and pulled out a box marked 'Sewing Machine.' She looked back at her companion, for approval, I gathered. They put it in their cart, looked so happy, and off they went. I love to make up the story of success; they seemed so thrilled. Seemed like a long thought through wish was coming true. I wish you well in reaching your dream too.

    I was taught in jr. high sewing class that after you get the fabric and pattern grainlines equidistant to the selvage(s), you should first pin the pattern piece to the fabric on the grainline, which keeps the pattern piece from shifting while the sides are being pinned. Then re-measure to ensure that your grainline didn't shift before continuing. Next, you should then start pinning the edges of the pattern pieces closest to the grainline pins, smoothing out the pattern as you pin around the piece. This is the most accurate method of pinning to keep the integrity of the fabric grainline. While it may sound like a very fussy method to cut out a pattern piece, but it works very well especially if you're working with striped fabric. Love your pattern reviews and sewing videos!!!! Keep 'em coming! 🥰

    I literally gasped seeing that fabric laid out! Wow that is gorgeous! You have the best taste in prints. An idea for small scraps? My local quilting store actually uses some donated fabric to make basically little pillowcases and gives them out as shopping bags instead of plastic. But the idea is put unusable scraps in and stitch it closed. You can then donate it to our local animal shelters for pet beds. I liked the idea

    I find your instructions are wonderful and the way you set up the layout for the garment you are doing so nicely your garment will be a winner. You are precise when you are cutting...to be anything less you would be disappointed with your end result.

    Hi Viv - I 💙 your pants! Awesome fabric. You are so good at seeing a fabric and knowing it will look great as whatever you are making. They look 🏝 beachy and I love that. 💝You are the best teacher. You really explain things perfectly. I’m always excited when I see a new video from you. You always make me smile. Enjoy you so much. Have a great weekend! Hugs🤗🧵 🏝🦜🐈🐾🐱🦋

    Thank you for adding the pockets. It's very enjoyable following along as you sew. And if the cats aren't interested in supervising then it probably isn't worth doing!

    OMG! That fabric is ka-razzy! Soon as I saw it on your table I thought "ocean wave"! Turned out so cute on you. You're a good teacher. I love that you brought out importance of ironing everything. Makes such a difference in the finished garment. Your kitties made nice pattern weights😍.

      That’s great news, Janis! If you’ve never worn wide leg pants like these, I can tell you they’re very comfortable. The ITY knit makes them feel very fluid and soft. Highly recommend!

    Thank you for this video. I’m a pretty new sewest well I’ve quilted but just very recently started with apparel. I don’t know why but I could not wrap my brain around how to do pockets until watching this video. Thank you. I love your channel. Congratulations on your new union with Fabic Mart.

    I donate gigantic bags of my small scraps to a school that has a sewing class. They have a ball!! When I went to Parson's for Fashion Design I loved playing with the scraps that the mfgs donated. Never throw them away. Donate them. You use super cool fabrics that would make doll clothes, purses and a million things! Kids would do backflips for your other scraps!

    Once again you have given a great fix. I'd never thought to put the material on my shoulder. What a great way to aid in feeding the fabric. This is s great de-stresser! I'm having a bit of a sewing binge. My second grand baby is due any time and of course I procrastinated . I also wanted some company my thought went to you. (Thus the reason for this late reply.) I thought I start from your very first show and go forward from there. May God continue to bless and keep you.
    Thanks for the wonderful company.

    I love the appearance of your gorgeous cat! Mine would have gone into crazy mode - ears back, eyes wide, whiskers thrust forward and then pattern ripping, pins flying and chaos ensuing. :)

      Trix is usually in that exact mode around my sewing, which is why I sort of dread to see him coming. Zig, on the other hand, is my Crown Prince who wouldn’t dream of causing chaos. If only Trix would take lessons from Zig.😸Thanks for writing, Nemie!💕

    This is such a great video in many ways but when you addressed the "wasting fabric" issue I was hooked! I don't intentionally waste fabric but have suffered the pangs of conscience when tossing some scraps left from cutting a pattern. Now I will relax and smile knowing Vivmom tosses hers, too. Ha!

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 років тому

      Absolutely, Helen. I do understand wanting to eek out every available inch of fabric, because fabric is beautiful and we love it. However, I do not want to hoard scraps. Sometimes I think, “oh, I’ll keep this and make sleeves out of it.” The reality is that I won’t make sleeves out of it, and it will start to pile up. So my policy is: out with the scraps. I’m lucky to have my quilting sister because she takes all of my leftover woven fabric (they do not want knits.)😃

    Thanks! Your sew-along is great! Gorgeous pants! I especially enjoyed your pocket application - your placement method is the best I have seen - so much simpler than marks or notches.
    I shall take a leaf out of your book - I have pieces and scraps of fabric that will never be used - from now on I will give or throw away any leftovers after each project instead of allowing them to clutter my sewing room. Happy sewing!

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for this excellent note, Kerstin. It makes me feel good to know that you found this helpful. I don’t feel guilty about tossing little scraps anymore. I mean, I adore fabric and never want to waste it, but I have to be realistic about keeping leftovers. Am I really going to make short sleeves out of some wild print? Nope. I’m not. Out it goes. A little more space and organization in the sewing room is always welcome.😄👍

      Thanks, Jubee! It started to almost escalate in one of these construction videos and I ended up having to delete one woman’s comments who was disgusted with me because I don’t ride public transportation to thrift stores to buy my fabric. Not kidding. She was put off by my apparent privilege and waste and it got ugly. Oh well. Can’t win them all!
