    I prefer "self sewing" than "selfish" but I admit I needed to learn to be selfish in sewing. When people found out I was sewing I was asked all time to sew something for others. For free of course (because it was my hobby!). People don't realise how time-consuming it is. I became selfish and learnt to say "No" and I can finally sew for myself and my beloved ones. And I dont feel bad about it - I feel great :)

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 років тому +12

      Absolutely don’t feel bad about it, Marta! If saying “no” is selfish, okay, maaaaybe I can buy that, but I still think it puts another onus on women. We have enough burdens without being stuck with a negative label!

    Totally agree with you about that term "selfish sewing". Why would anyone ever attach such a negative term to sewing for yourself. Women carry enough silly guilt around,..Do we really have to attach it to our joyest hobbies!!!

    Thank you for this video. I actually tried and successfully made a knit fabric top. Your video showed me that knit fabric isn't as intimidating as I always imagined.

      That’s great news, Pearl! Congrats on your success!! I was intimidated with knits, and I haven’t been sewing them very long, just about a year. I think you’ll find that you make a lot of progress very quickly with them; the projects tend to go faster and it’s fun to have a garment sooner. Keeping all the various knits straight can be a challenge, but we know this: they all stretch!!😄👍

    Isn't it funny how there is always someone out there who just has to put a negative spin on anything fun. Sewing is not only practical but creative, fun and enjoyable. And we dressmakers/seamstresses create, yes, create things that cannot be purchased in a store. Our clothes also fit our magnificent figures. How wonderful is that? Love, love, love your channel. It is just wonderful that someone with your skills is sharing with the world and encouraging new dressmakers worldwide. Looking forward to seeing what you create next. Have a wonderful weekend.

      Thank you, Linda! I’m telling you, the support and kindness of everyone here leaves me amazed, encouraged and refreshed. I seem to think I have nothing to offer, but I am told otherwise, and it is so generous!!😄💕We just aren’t going to pay anymore attention to the “selfish sewing” phrase because it doesn’t fit. It’s annoying and it doesn’t fit, so it’s out.👉A hobby that taps into creativity and resourcefulness, problem solving, math, precision, beauty and fulfillment isn’t a selfish and therefore negative thing. No way!! Thanks again for writing and giving me such a lift.

    You did great Viv and that was really a nice video for beginner sewists. And thanks for touching on that topic of 'selfish sewing'. Who in heaven's name out there thought that one up or is it some kind of generational thing? Selfish is not wanting to share your M&M's. Sitting down at the machine and making yourself something pretty or trying out a more difficult pattern is not selfish. It's called creative time and we as women are creative by nature. It does have a nasty guilty connotation and why would anyone promote that? I don't hear anyone saying selfish painting or selfish knitting...you're right, that's one phrase we should 86 ASAP.

    • @kpcntry

      Actually the term selfish knitting is a thing. It is encouraged when a knitter is constantly being asked to create things for people who do not appreciate the time and effort that it takes to complete a project.

      Here’s the thing, Kelli: let’s just call it self protection. If someone is taking advantage of another’s skill, and wanting to use that person thoughtlessly for their own gain, THEY’RE the ones being selfish - not the knitter or sewer!

    I am becoming addicted to your videos despite having been sewing for 62 of my 75 years. We can always learn something new. Here is something I learned a few years ago: SILK organza (white or ivory) makes the world's best press cloth. It can take high heat and you are able to see through it. On complicated pressing pieces it is very helpful to see what lies under the cloth. I serge the edges so the silk doesn't ravel. Remember polyester does not work (it will melt)...only silk will do.

    • @vivmomsews4962

    Thank you , thank you, thank you! I’m so happy that you showed how to make this top. I learned so much. I didn’t know single notches were on the front! I didn’t know you could you non stretch woven bias binding even though I knew bias stretched. I thought it had to be a knit. I didn’t know you could use a non stretch stitch to sew it up. I definitely will try this pattern. I use to sew in middle scans high school. Then got away from it from going to college then a work career. Then I got into quilting. I’m 61 with a thyroid condition and my weight fluctuates so much I thought I’d make clothes that could accommodate the fluctuations. This top does it. You have no idea how happy you made me. I wish I could give you more than one thumbs up! You are giving me the courage to get back into sewing clothes. Your choice of patterns and fabrics are wonderful as well. Again, thank you so much.

      Yay! It’s Francine!! I was hoping you’d stop by, my dear.😄I’m happy this video helped. The filming was pretty bad but I promise to improve!👍I got smacked down in a sewing forum for using purchased bias binding, but I continue to use it and really like the finish it gives. It’s fine to use on knit necklines, provided they’re big enough to get on without stretching them. I wouldn’t use them on a turtleneck, though. A binding made from the knit fabric would be a much better choice in that case.🌸I returned to sewing after being away from it for years and it is SO GREAT to be back!! Here’s to your sewing success! A toast to many smiles and well fitting clothes!🥂

    Selfish sewing must come from people that don't sew or don't want to sew. I had ladies that thought because I sewed I could sew for them. Most of them thought it should be a favor. But I also had some lovely people that offered to pay. No sewing used to be a necessity but when I sew it's a joy. For the life of me I don't underst!understand! How anyone can do without a working sewing machine in their home if for nothing else but hemming and repairs. You have an amazing channel.

    Love the tunic pattern and really love to watch the actual sewing part. Wish you would do that more often. Love to see your techniques. I’ve been sewing a long time but have never used the binding on knits before. I WILL BE TRYING this. My wide necklines usually stretch too much and fall off my shoulders and gets to be irritating after a while. This would really fix that problem, so the new top I’m getting ready to sew will definitely have some woven binding in the neckline. Thank you for the great video. And tell Brad thanks for his aid in holding up the tunic. 😊

I see how you get a good finish just using your regular machine......and think maybe that’s the best way to ago.. 🤔 or I could actually practice on the cover stitch instead of waiting until I need it to finish a garment, what do they have say about a bad tradesman blaming his tools😝

      Well, give yourself a break Sue. Cover stitch machines (from what I’ve heard) aren’t the easiest machines to master. And knits can be real pains when it comes to hemming them. I’ve been known to leave hems off - and let the raw edge do the talking.😄Of course you couldn’t do that on your ponte skirt, so I say “well done!!” that you figured it out and devoted all that time and care to a beautiful finish. The timing could not have been better for this video. I have a total fear of bias binding and have a pattern on my cutting table that needs it. I just got on the computer to try to figure out how to do an all-in-one facing for the neck and arm holes and here was your video sent to me from the sewing saints telling me to get over it and get out the bias binding that’s been collecting dust for a year. Thank you!!!!

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 років тому

      Aww Joyce, you’re great!! I was nervous about the bias binding, of all things, because I was told once that it makes my clothes look homemade. That stung, but I just never stopped using it. It’s an easy application that gives a neat finish - what’s not to like? I would try making my own but I have tons of the purchased stuff. I’m so happy it could help you!! Bias binding can seem a little frightening but you can iron it into submission and teach it who’s boss!👊 Sometimes it is not placed at the raw edge of the neckline, but a little further back to accommodate a 5/8” seam allowance. It’s still easy. If you get into a BIND, send me a message! I’ll try to help.😄💕

      Viv, thank you so much for your kind reply. I got spanked by the sewing saints. The fabric I had on my table last night was maybe my favorite fabric of all time. It’s a gorgeous Nani Iro double gauze. I decided I better sew a wearable muslin because I was using a new pattern and didn’t want to take any chances. The fabric that I had in my stash needed a lining so I was back to trying to learn how to line a sleeveless dress. I found a few videos, thought I got it and went after it. I cut the lining, sewed the shoulder seams then sewed the neck, graded the seams, clipped the curves, sewed the seams down to the lining and ironed it. Looked great and I was patting myself on the back. Then I flipped the lining to the inside and I had sewn the darn thing inside out. Now that mess is visible on inside of my neck. I’m so mad at myself. This dress is so stinking cute I hate that I messed it up. Now I’m trying to decide if I should just top stitch those seams down or if I should add a visible bias binding. Can you just slip the bias binding over the top edge then stitch it down? With the lining and the seams, I’m afraid it could be too bulky. What do you think? My fabric is Mexican Fiesta, the Dana Willard design from Art Gallery. It’s really fun fabric and maybe I could use contrasting thread and a large zig zag and top stitch.

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 років тому

      You absolutely can wrap the bias around the edge and topstitch it down. They make it easy with the two folded-in sides. Rats! about your dress. I have done the exact same thing.😫If you think the bias binding will be too bulky, skip it. Go with what’s easiest and don’t worry about it for this version. When you start working on your Nani Iro (btw, mind me asking where you purchased it?) you’ll be extra cautious and it’ll come out perfectly smashing!🎊🎉

    • @joycehayhow8
      @joycehayhow8 5 років тому

      I got it at Stonemountain. I got “Chorus” in the blue and yellow. I got the last of their bolt and it was only 1 5/8 yd. I wanted a really simple pattern to showcase the fabric. If you see it online it’s hard to tell the scope of the pattern but the design (two blue strips and yellow in the center) goes from selvage to selvage. I’m considering buying another yard of it so I have enough to use both top and bottom of the fabric pattern. While searching for it I discovered Jones and Vandermeer and they have a nice selection of Nani Iro. Also, Miss Matatabi appears to have very reasonable shipping prices to the US and her selection is to die for.
      I’m totally obsessed with Japanese double gauze at the moment. We did a sailing trip a couple of months ago and I wanted double gauze for ease of packing and it could be hand washed if needed and not look like horrible. I fell in love with it.

  • @wasmorton
    @wasmorton 5 років тому +31

    Question, why did you cut the back from the center of the fabric? I guess I’m too frugal with my fabric, lol. I would have moved the fold so I only had enough room to cut the back and had the rest of the fabric left in one continuous piece. As always, you’re adorable and I love your videos.

    • @teresawilson7630
      @teresawilson7630 5 років тому +6

If it’s woven fabric, I give it to my quilting sister and her pals. I’m never going to sew with the fabric again. You are definitely right that folding a bit narrower would conserve fabric. I just say, conserve for what? It would still be a weird shape. But thanks for another perspective.👍

    I don’t like the term selfish sewing either! Thank you for addressing the issue. I sewed for my children when they were small and also for my grandchildren and some baby gifts if I know the person will appreciate a custom gift. But I tend to sew for myself because most people do not appreciate the time planning and efforts that sewing takes. I quit sewing for others when the gifts were easily discarded or thrifted. I have limited time to sew and now choose carefully how I use the time and for whom. It’s usually for me unless family has a request.
    Thanks for the demo on woven bias tape. I have boxes of it and usually don’t use it - I came from the era of basing and hate the time consumption. I like you way - I think I will try it on my next top. Keep up the great work on your videos!

    I don’t like to keep scraps, either! I’ve always felt a little guilty throwing them away, so they end up in a pile taking up space!. Recently saw where someone puts a pile of scraps on the cutting board and rolls over randomly with a rotary cutter, and then she uses them to fill stuffies for kids and pets. If you know someone who likes doing crafts, this would be a great idea.

    Really enjoyed watching each stage of this make. I liked that you kept it in real time too. I hope that you do more videos like this. I live in the UK where all sewers are watching The Great British Sewing Bee on TV, which is great fun and very inspiring.

      Fabulous, Gaga!! Great to hear from you, and I appreciate that you gave me positive feedback. I liked filming in real time too. Sometimes I get disappointed when the teaching video says, “ok, sew this up here,” and they come back and it’s done. I like to SEE them do it.👍GBSB is a favorite show of mine. Love love love!!

      @@judisewnsew6514 I am assuming you don't live in the UK. My brother and sister in law live in America and watch a lot of British TV, the soaps, etc. I will ask them how they do it and get back to you. Anita

    You are amazing! I love all of your videos but my favorites are the sew alongs and the monthly makes. I have purchased a few of the patterns you have used (this one included! Can’t wait for it to come in the mail!) and am anxious to start sewing! You are an inspiration and we are so lucky that you make this available to us. ❤️🌺❤️🌺❤️

    So glad to find your construction videos. I like your sewing style. Not so OCD As some. Just enough to make it right without going thru extra steps.

      Aww thank you, Patricia! I’m interested in careful sewing but nothing perfect. I want to wear my clothes, not enclose them in a glass case for everyone to fawn over my inner finishes, lol. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!😃)

    I've watched your tutorial twice. Thank you for taking the time to show us step by step and for encouraging us. Also, your saying.....throw out the scraps, don't worry about sewing over pins, etc.,..... is very freeing! You are a true asset to the sewing community.

      I agree. Sometimes we need that "permission" to get rid of the things that take up to much space and it helps me not to feel guilty about it.

    Fun to see how you cut your notches. That is the same way I learned years ago and still cut them today! Thank you for the wonderful video! 💕

      Oh I love a good, substantial notch, Brenda!! lol😁Actually notches have gotten smaller! The 1960’s patterns have much larger notches. Present day double-notches almost look like vintage single notches. What is this world coming to?!

      Thanks Anita! That was a lot to watch! I’ve wondered how to pare down my construction videos but then I hear from new sewers who are so appreciative of the longer, slower pace. This channel has been a revelation for me! A very fun one, I should add.😃
