I like how losing his eye to an ice cream scoop is supposed to be less scary than losing it in the war, even though that is a HORRIFYING image.
Word. .w.
jesus christ you’re right, I hadn’t thought about that
Gruesome injuries in war feel like something that's just a given, it always happens to at least some people. Similar injuries happening with something as harmless as an ice cream scoop is a scarier image because you never expect that to happen

I've seen enough slasher movies to know that that is NOT A PRETTY IMAGE.
Mordecai being OUTRAGED and OFFENDED by the implication that he'd roller skate indoors is so perfect
If anything he seems most offended by the idea that he would do it poorly.
Nice SFX too, with the little cat growl as he overhears Viktor's explanation.

There's something about Atlas being in greyscale, being completely silent and only ever cracking ONE small smile that's very fascinating. The Mystery Of Atlas May.
He is just gray
He appears to be modeled after a snow leopard, or a white tiger...or something between the design of a tiger and the colors of a snow leopard
He's always been such a mystery in the comic too, and yet it feels like the whole story takes place because of him, even tho he's gone. I really like characters like these
You can say
Atlas....shrugged. 😎
@@larryburns7430 They mean that Atlas, even with the warm lighting, looks as cold and as grey as stone. He looks very out of place visually and verbally (He doesn't say a single word while everyone else is quite talkative). Ivy's smart enough to know that

Ivy is the spitting image of her father- also I love how at this age, Rocky and Freckle were getting dislocated arms and Ivy was accidentally spying on an illegal scheme
”In the name of … Discovery!”
No actually I think this short might’ve took a few years in the future cause Ivy here looks like she’s around 11 and freckle in the lackadaisy shop short looked way younger then that, freckle and Ivy are the same age so I’m guessing that around this time freckle was doing school work while Rocky was out traveling (that’s just a theory anyways)

* said while in pain and covered in multiple hazards *
Not to be an asshole, but how is it shocking/surprising/noteworthy that a cartoon character is the splitting image of their father? It makes sense in real life because of genetics, but a drawing?
I like how you can see Ivy piecing things together with each piece of evidence. She sees Mordecai's gun and broken arm, the plate bolted to the door, victor's eyepatch and sudden mood shift, the discarded door riddled with bullet holes, and the fact that Victor is putting a new door on the car. She pokes around so easily and absorbs information like a sponge. The title is "Ingenue" which means an artless and innocent young girl, which Ivy appears to be, but you get to see just how wrong that is. Let's just hope curiosity doesn't kill this cat.
Plus, it's only a little away from ingenious, which fits her like a glove.
I mean, ingenue can definitely mean that, but it's also often used to describe a budding young woman who is entering high class "society". Ivy is shown be that, but instead she's entering a world of crime.
Ivy is so smart
@@Lemonade-Tree Excellent summarization, Mr./Ms. Tree
Great observation! Tracy and Fable are not just great artists, but great filmmakers too, the amount of detail is insane. Some smart cookie Ivy is. Let's hope she'll get through to the end of the series unharmed.
I like how at around 3:53 Atlas looks down at Ivy, then Mordecai notices his gaze and cleans himself. It kinda shows how much he cares about his boss
I haven't reread the comics in a while, but I love how I got every reference to them. I beleive I remember Mordecai's accident with his arm-- he kinda did fall down the stairs, but the main reason his arm got busted was because while falling, he was getting shot at. This also explains Mordecai's hesitation to shoot Ivy in the pilot, since he met her as a kid and clearly still cares about her and the Lackadaisy crew just a bit. Seems Serafine was right about them needing to worry about him getting sentimental about old times.
What abut Ruby, is he dead?
@@deihiru if I recall the comics right.
No. They paid for ivy's college and live in a different city or something...
If you follow Mordecai's comic arc so far, it's pretty clear that he's tracking down whoever killed Atlas. Which implies that his care for Atlas is more than just "a little bit" (I don't Ship them, but there are lots of forms of caring other than romantic). And with Ivy as Atlas's goddaughter, I doubt comics!Mordecai would kill her... though it remains to be seen how much overlap there is in motivation and loyalties.
I believe there's also a post where Tracy says that Mordecai and Mitzi spat like siblings, which is an interesting way to read their dynamic. I wrote a double drabble that was my best attempt to reconcile all the details we know about them and Atlas with the way that Mordecai and Mitzi have been acting and the negative way they act toward each other now; I think it turned out pretty good for being just 200 words.
I'm pretty sure Mordecai only changed sides because he's trying to find out who killed Atlas.
And he kneecapped Viktor to ensure that he would never have to fight against him. He cares about Viktor.
@@pikathemimikyu6655 There's a page somewhere where Tracy dissects the meeting at that outdoor cafe, the point where Mitzi implies that Mordecai stealing their guns nearly led to Viktor's death. Tracy points out that Mordecai is trying to hide his emotional reaction, quite literally hiding behind the menu. I have some issues picking up on subtext so I always love seeing tiny details like that pointed out for me.
Atlas being capable of easily intimidating his own friend with a blank stare, and then cracking a small grin to let said friend know he can go for that big warm hug, is more characterization in 10 seconds than some shows can manage with hours of runtime.
No bc why did I get literal chills
lol yea then mf baps lil Ivy with his hat too
This also shows how certain things can be conveyed through animation in a uniquely different way than through a comic. I feel like I learned more about Atlas in those few seconds than in the entire webcomic
Which to be clear is fine, I think Atlas is supposed to be a bit of a mystery. But it was still really cool to see.
Just like my dad 🥲

A quarter back then was like 20 bucks today.
4:01 I just noticed Ruby's tail curls when she said the quiet part out loud.
I didn't expect to get so emotional about this. There's something so poignant about seeing glimpses of "the good old days" as compared to the main timeline. Love seeing a younger and slightly less poised Mordecai, and the beginnings of Viktor's soft spot for the irrepressible Ivy.
“Well… I won’t rat on ya. If you give me a quarter” - Ivy Pepper
“Now who is gangster?” - Viktor

Precocious means having unusual intelligence or maturity for a child, adult-like reasoning and logic.
Mordecai realized quickly that Ivy was incredibly capable of asking questions in a very grounded in reality way that was intelligent for a child.
A simple lie didn’t entertain her because she saw how illogical it was along side other evidence, such as Mordecai carrying a firearm for some who is just supposed to be running numbers for a small cafe. He figured out quickly that he kept giving her the opportunity to extract more information she could figure out the truth even if he tried to lie... like what happened with Victor.
Victor tried to lie and shit down conversation but that lead Ivy to looking at her surroundings more inquisitively: paying attention to what Victor was fixing and the evidence left behind.
It’s more than likely if Victor ignored her she probably would of lost interest and left before making the conclusion of them being gangsters.

Not just her interest in mechanical engineering, but the fact that she was born a quick-witted, street smart criminal with an unassuming face, and that she knows. Most children her age would not respond with "What do you need the gun for if you're just adding numbers?" after noticing that the bookkeeper has a gun. Or the fact that she sees right through Viktor's lies, which he obviously made up to not have to tell a little child about war. She even asks him "Did you lose your eye in the war?"
It also took her nothing more than the suspicious atmosphere, the gun-carrying bookkeeper and the realization that Viktor was installing armor on the car door because the previous one got shot up, to deduce precisely what she needed to know, which is that they're gangsters or robbers. And then, she immediately turns that into an opportunity and seizes it by blackmailing Viktor with this knowledge. She really is a born criminal, and easily the most catlike personality in the cast.
literally just watched the pilot episode for the first time, and honestly I've fallen in love with this series. There are so many good series on youtube and so many underrated ones, I honestly wish I had the money to fund them all. I love the music, theme, and just overall everything about Lackadaisy. Its so immersive and I find myself drawn into the characters wanting to know more about who they are and how they all got into their current situations. I eagerly look forward to more.
Episode one is still in production
@@larryburns7430 pilot episode then
I love these characters so much. The story telling is impeccable!!!
A lot of people don't get it but kids aren't dumb by default, they just happen to know less about most things. The problem arises when the older people lookdown on and neglect to teach them. Even just regular interaction does a lot for them.
YOU ARE SO RIGHT!
I keep saying that I was a dumb child but the reality is that I just didn't understand most things...
and I had a pretty smart mind even then
Viktor's knee crackling when he stands up is craaazy good detail
Good ear!
The sound design team went bongers on this! The sound of Ivy hitting the car door sounds so gooooood!
Wow, just like me fr fr.
This would have been before Mordecai kneecapped him though, right?
@@sirboomsalot4902 Yeah Mordecai mentions that he kneecapped viktor when he joined marigold
@@sirboomsalot4902Yes, but before that he still had a bad knee from the war. Mordecai just gave the same treatment to his working knee.
I love watching mordecai express his emotions through his tail, its so silly
All the faces Ivy makes in this short are the best
Oh my god the lore it’s palpable and Mordacei just exudes cat energy I love it
He...he IS a cat.
They all kinda do. Some are just more capable of hiding their cat-like urges than others
who asked? my videos are better
who asked? my videos are better
Cats are so cool🥹
The look Victor gave her when he said "How to Ice cream scoop?" warms my heart
It's about the closest that Victor got to smiling.
Though the idea of Victor losing an eye to an ice cream scoop is going to be in my nightmares for a bit.
I would die for Ivy. She is literally the cutest thing ever
I love how inquisitive and observant she is. I'm excited to see more of this character.
I love how Atlas's color is just grayish in each shot we see of him. It perfectly symbolizes the mystery behind Atlas and his death later in the story of Lackadaisy. I also love at 4:00 Mordecai's sudden eye movements from shock to looking at Ivy then at Viktor in response to Ivy figuring out that they're gangsters.
A little unhappy that he never talked
Sucks
It also symbolizes his pending death. He's not part of the living anymore. Like he's alive but at the same time he's not.
Or the fact Ivy doesn't remember all that much about him, like we're seeing Ivy herself reminiscing of the past but even Atlas she can't recall much about him.
@@ethanwilde4716it’s so interesting seeing as he’s her godfather and all, she still got mixed up with Lackadaisy in the end 😌
