yknow, after watching the whole thing, I do actually like the whole idea behind the "debates" between gollum and smeagol. They don't really amount to much, mainly because Gollum is basically always just evil while smeagol is the nice option. But the ones at the end where smeagol suddenly becomes an asshole because he wants Mell all for himself, forcing gollum to argue in favour of doing the right thing, makes me feel like there was potential for something neat here.
This game feels like doing a D&D session with an uncooperative DM "I employ my friend and the bird to smuggle my way out via crate" "Um, actually they catch the crate anyway and bring you back to jail"
This is truly a shame for Germany's video game industry...Daedalic was formerly so popular here with their brilliant P'n'C games like the Deponia or he Edna series but it had to come this way. For those who want to learn further, there is a German documentary with English subtitles on Daedalic's downfall (like internal problems, financial etc.)

The funniest thing here, is that if Daedelic had stuck to their forte, point-and-click adventure games, I think a Gollum game could have been fine. Take that, take the "convince Smeagol/Gollum" bits which are legitimately a fine way of turning one of the most iconic aspects of the character into a gameplay component, and you could have had an okay game, especially with more resources devoted to the actual writing.

An actual good Gollum game would START in Moria and it would end with Gollum sneaking up on Sam and Frodo after the fellowship split. It would have to be a tracking/survival game, in that order. You would follow the trail of the fellowship, survive on your own with fish and whatever else. I also don't think a Gollum game really needs a supporting cast either. If the dialogue were treated like Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, then the internal dialogue of Smeagol's deranged mind while tracking the precious would be extremely compelling.

The worst character in all of LOTR is Gollum, so the whole damn game is about him. This is actually like someone had to make a LOTR game but had a really bad game of poker the night before, filled with "Ok, double down, either I win this hand or I have to add ______" to the game, and then he never won a single hand.

This was so sad, Daedalic was an icon in the German video game community. The witty writing and humor, the tackling of difficult themes was so distinctly German that will not be able to be achieved by other studios I‘m 100% certain. There will never be an Edna 3 :((
Don’t give up hope entirely. There’s a company in Japan who made a series called Rune Factory. They went bankrupt but they were then revived by another company who brought the same ppl back to continue the series. You never know what could happen.
Jan Baumann (Poki) the Lead Developer of both the Edna and Deponia Series left the Studio in 2020 to focus on his musical career, so he for example wasn't part of this mess. If he returns to game developing remains to be seen, but any serious continuation of these series without him would've probably been doomed anyway. He was the Head behind them, for example he developed Edna 1 mostly by himself and the writing of all games in those series was done largely by him.
There are a true small handful of character moments in this that are actually great, and it’s so sad to see. I genuinely laughed so much at the orc’s “What did I JUST say” when he immediately went in the feeding trough.

I think it could have had potential, but as a completely different type of game. As an RPG that allows itself to diverge from 'canon' and explore alternate possibilities with different choices, and with the internal conflict with Sméagol/Gollum made more impactful and engaging, I'd say there could have been something really cool.
