Can you do a video or say something about SANS? They are advertising that they can start people with an average salary at over 90K. I was told they are the Gucci of the cyber field but is the ROI worth it?

Here is my advice: if You are going to school and you want a higher salary, then YES a bachelors opens doors to jobs and more money. If you want to get it in cyber, IT HELPS you understand more of cyber because a lot of it is repetitive! Yes your right it does take off years of experience. If you have experience and a bachelors and masters you will go far! But experience tops it all. The degree just helps puts the glue together and helps you see things better. I’m going through this. I’m getting experience and I understand so much more with it while reading my books! GET BOTH!!

Thank you for the video Nicole! I work in a non-IT healthcare related field and have been researching ways to transition into information security. Your insight is very helpful. I have a MS in my particular area, so I do not want to take on large amounts of debt again. I am considering WGU or possibly a local community college that offers an Associates degree in Cybersecurity. I’m almost over the over analysis paralysis!
WGU is awesome! I would suggest it and is highly recognized in the IT industry. Other industries not so much. It's affordable and you get a good education. They have MS IT degrees that would be really helpful for you. I wouldn't suggest getting a lower-level degree if you already have a MS
@N. D. I got into IT with the comptia a+, I had no prior it experience I came from logistics. The a+ is an awesome cert it gives you the foundation of everything software and hardware and can help you land an it job, then you can go into network +, sec+
Hi! Nice vid btw! I appreciate your experiences and input on being as a student in WGU. However what do you think about WGU for students that just graduate from high school? I've been hearing that people just don't recommend it at all because you NEED work expierence (based off the degree you apply to) to get through these courses. I'm planning on applying for a BA cyber security degree, however hearing that people just don't reccomend applying to this school without work expierence is kind of demotivating me to attend. I would really appreciate it if I got input on this, and it would help me be more comfortable on deciding on other options besides WGU. Thanks!!

Is there a point in getting an AS degree? Nearly all jobs in cybersecurity seem to not require a degree except for management and teaching positions, but those roles usually require a BS+. So should I save the money and self learn and gain IT experience instead?

I am current Cybersecurity Undergrade right now. From what I can say, Cyberscurity is going to be focusing more on Law and Policy with a mix of Networking and Ethical Hacking courses. On the other hand, Information Technology (IT) will be going to be focusing on a little "easier" classes. In the present day, I HIGHLY recommend pursuing a cybersecurity degree unless wanting to go work at a NOC or specifically an IT job. Hope this helps.

I’m currently looking to get a change in career through a wgu computer science degree, I am also interested in getting into cyber security in the future. In your opinion is it better in the long run to get a degree in computer science and get some job experience under my belt then pursue a career or degree in cyber security down the line, or just go ahead and get both degrees out of the way?

WGU computer science degree would be more versatile and would be more beneficial in the long run and in getting a job. You don't need to get both degrees.

I want to pursue cyber security and got a couple questions. There is a technical college near me offering CS 2 year school with many certifications, then there is WGU I've been considering. Which one would be the best payoff you think? I can get all the certs but like you said larger corps look for that degree.
Hmmmm, you can start with the associates degree and transfer to WGU later. A lot of people have issues completing WGU because it is so self paced. In community college your would get teachers, students, etc…

One question that I have is do you need a college degree to be in cyber security? I’m finishing my two year liberal arts degree this year, but I don’t know if it’ll be any use for me. If I chose to go into cyber security, would you recommend getting a bachelors/masters degree even if you feel like you cannot afford higher education? I know there are people who work in cyber security who have masters degrees. I know of one personally and another one who plans on pursuing a masters degree after his bachelors degree. I joined the military after I graduated in 2013 as an information technical specialist. A degree does not mean success but helps land your first job . I got my cybersecurity degree this year and got promoted. Not sure if it is indicative as there are so many other variables that play into someones life and success/failure

With a boot camp you’re only getting certs. Go for the degree.

If you are going into the civilian sector and as maybe a junior analyst then having certifications over a degree is pretty good, now if you are going for Sr. analyst, or program manager then having a degree is better. That being said if you are going for any of the government position. NSA, DoD, CIA, FBI etc. then you will need a degree to really get anywhere plus certifications. Especially if you want over GS12.

Depends on the niche you want to go into. Reading code would be very useful for all niches. you can't go wrong with learning how to program if you like doing it. I have a video coming out soon on this question!
Every cybersecurity pro should know Python. Everything after that is just a bonus.
@@GTRNights I've heard C++ was better because it encompasses everything you need to know vs Python because it has some limitations. Of course, I don't know either software, I just go by word of mouth poor of me saying.

@@ktraider100 that all depends on you and how much you actually know and how well you can negotiate. I can tell you now with 4 month experience you'll probably be on the Helpdesk. Unless you've absorbed massive amounts of info and can prove it in a technical interview.

AS degree in a public community college is affordable + they give you credits for your certs, so you would take less classes!

$200k on a degree? Damn! In the UK I paid around £9k for my BA Math. Total. It's now up to around £9k per year. I'm now doing my MSc in Cyber Security with King's College. That's about £15k for a 2 year course. Yeah - if that all cost around $200k/£150k my choices might be different...

@@gfactorygfactory8464 I'm not sure there is an age limit. I'm 47 and they let me in. The biggest issue I had was providing exidence of programming experience to the admissions team, as I'm not a developer. It turned out to be a reasonable prerequisite as the Security Engineering module I just completed relied quite a bit on C and Assembly, so I struggled through that one. The cryptography module needs a decent grasp of basic modular arithmentic and number theory, so nothing too hard on the mathematics front. A decent grasp of computer science topics like networking and memory management etc. is also helpful. I think fees are different for international students, as there isn't a government subsidy, so if you're not a UK resident, then the cost might be higher.
I agree with you but some university carry weights around the world 🌎 like Mit university, Oxford , Cambridge these university alone open doors. I like the sound of WGU but I don’t believe it’s that recognize over the world like the other university.
Yes, that is true and would be worth it for the network you gain. However, for technical trades, they are a little overkill. For high-level executive positions yeah they are great.
The price tag for those degrees are high. You receive great training, but you are definitely paying for the school name.
Bellevue university is a good cyber security school. They're are part of the National Centers of Academic Excellence. (CAE)

No, your life is just beginning!
Never too late to start, but realize, that if you go the education route, you'll be 44-45. Then your entry level job you will work for at lest 2-4 years, so 46-48. You'll need a total of 10 years experience before you are considered for management positions, so then you're looking at 54-55 years old. While that's doable, depending on your drive and ambition and ability to perform... you may not be able to reach as high as younger people over the course of your career. Just keeping it real.
It’s not late at all. You’ll learn through your BS the most current info(straight through, 2-3 yrs max), get an online degree like the one from wgu, then entry level but after 3yrs of that, you’ll have a better understanding of the landscape, you’ll be surround by younger co-workers which will motivate you and you’ll be making your path. Don’t think of the 2-3yr time period. Think of it in days, do the best/most you can that day and focus on that day. Do the same the next day, before you know it you’ll be in an cyber security role looking to make your next move.

@@freerice9595 do you have a BA? That might be what it comes down to. Those companies might just want to see you have that degree in addition to experience.
@@freerice9595 Honestly, it really boils down to you. Resume, interview skills, personality, experience all have to be a match. A degree or cert doesn't guarantee you a job. I known plenty of people that have 1 cert and no degree and killed a pen test interview and land the jobs. I'd just keep chipping away and make projects, network etc. Also, networking with recruiters is key too. There ain't one way to get in I'm starting to see for myself

Ya but how do you get that job without any training? They just picking up random people off the street?
I highly disagree. My bachelors taught me tons of things that I would never have learned had I just tried to get on the job experience. Security is an extremely vast field that isn't like most blue-collar jobs. What you say absolutely does NOT go for this field. There's a reason many Analyst positions require a bachelors as a minimum. They need you to already be an expert and you don't get that by doing on-the-job. On-the-job doesn't exist in Security for the most part because they don't want to take time and cost to train you because it can take years. Why should they invest 100's of thousands of dollars and 4-5 years training you and getting almost no benefit when they can hire someone who can already do the job day 1? A degree will teach you far more than you will teach yourself. You're deeply underestimating the amount of knowledge you need to be an Analyst and underestimating the amount of skill required. This isn't carpentry or plumbing.

@@howardbonds5106 Exactly. As a senior manager, I'm not hiring someone who is going to possibly screw up and get the company breached. 1 in 6 SMBs will close their doors within 1 year of a breach. There's millions of dollars and people's jobs and entire businesses on the line. We don't just hire Joe off the street because he wants a fat salary and has no experience or education.
