- Learn to Draw for a richer life
It is good for mental and physical health
This is a video with basic instruction on how to draw with charcoal. The scene is a pasture at sunset whe the cattle are kicking up a lot of dry dusk. I call it Millar time because I have watched too many beer commercials :).

Compressed Charcoal Pencils
These pencils are made from compressed charcoal and are good for making darker marks but cannot be blended or softened so easily
Good for the later stages of the drawing for precise marks
I use a General 6B but other hardnesses are available
Vine Charcoal
Very soft charcoal good for blending and easy to erase
Good for the early stages of the drawing , layout and light areas of the drawing.
Comes in soft medium and hard
Blending tools
The Finger
Good for that “hands on” quality
Just remember to look in the mirror before heading into public
Blending Stomp, Tortillion
A piece of soft rolled paper that comes in various sizes
Blends the charcoal very well and can also be used to produce marks
Chamois , paper towel, toilet paper
All three are soft and work well to blend larger areas
Eraser
Kneaded eraser (1), or a erasing pencil (2) are both useful for erasing charcoal

What a nice surprise to see you again! A very interesting and useful tutorial, Gary. Reducing animals as simple shapes solves a lot of problems. Love the highlights too. I agree about drawing; I’ve always found it very relaxing. Looking forward to seeing more of your amazing teaching. Thank you.
Many thanks Barbara appreciate the support
Wow! If that doesn’t inspire you to draw I don’t know what will. Beautiful
Thank you so much 😀 Doug
Haven't seen you for a while but boy this is a fantastic lesson! I immediately had to reach for pencil and paper to have a go at it.
BEAUTIFUL.! I rarely use that word, but it's a word that characterises all of your work. And such an intelligent, knowledgable commentary. Don't see enough of you.
Thx so much!
Thank you for sharing your tutorial sir Gary.😊
You are very welcome
Thank you Gary for your detailed explanation and teaching. I learned the essence of composition and the control of light and shade. This is a solid display of basic skills. I wish you good health and good spirits.
Doing well - thx for the encouragement

Awesome to see a new video from you. I greatly appreciate your channel and tutorial videos. I'm a newbie learning lots from you. You are greatly talented, a great educator and very inspirational. Thankyou Gary.
Awesome, thank you!
❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏
Thank you
its very nice, its always about how one see something, What I see the only thing that distract my eye is
the cowboy seems to have his pants way to high , just what I see..
Very atmospheric and skilful use of the different line thicknesses - wonderful capture of the lighting conditions. Fantastic result, as if I were standing there in the meadow. And only one clear cow is recognisable enough to identify the rest as a herd, a great trick, thank you!
The previous small drawing study of the animal bodies and also the human are very helpful, I am now a lot wiser, because it is one thing to look at these drawings already finished or to observe them in their creation by a practised hand.
I usually only look at your watercolour creations and found this a pleasant change.
I have one request: could you remove the tape around the picture for the viewer at the end of your sessions? It is so very satisfying to watch.
Thank you for all your videos! Greetings from Germany.
Great comments - Thx for sharing with me!!
