Legends never die, Minnie's daughter Maya Rudolph was mentioning how her daughter will never get to spend time with her grandma, but with these clips, I would feel so proud and comforting to have a grandma to sing and look like that. What a great legacy for her grandchildren.

This is such an ode to love from an amazing talent, in a time of great change. This poetic, sensitive song expresses an innocent, sweet sense of 70s love. It's so vulnerable and expressive, yet strong at the same time...need more of this sweetness now!

    Illiness and Death:
On August 24, 1976, Riperton revealed on The Tonight Show that she had undergone a mastectomy due to breast cancer.[4] At the time of her diagnosis, Riperton found out her cancer had already spread to the lymphatic system, and she was given about six months to live.[4] She continued touring in 1977 and 1978, and she became the national spokeswoman for the American Cancer Society's 1978-79 campaign.[4] During the recording of her final album, Minnie, her cancer progressed to the point that she was in a great deal of pain.[4] Extreme lymphedema immobilized her right arm in early 1979. In her final singing appearances on television (most notably on the Mike Douglas Show), her right arm remained in a fixed position during her performances.[4] Near her death, in concert, she changed the end of "Lovin' You", "Maya, Maya, Maya" to "Maya, Maya, Ringo, Maya." Ringo was her nickname for her son, Marc.
By mid-June, Riperton was confined to bed. She entered Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on July 10. On Thursday, July 12 at 10:00 am, she died in the arms of her husband. That Sunday, following a funeral service attended by more than five hundred mourners, Riperton was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. Her epitaph is the opening line of her most famous song: "Lovin' you is easy 'cause you're beautiful".

Gypsophila or commonly known as baby's breath, I think that is what Minnie has in her hair whilst she sings this little ripper of a song.
Her innocent tone makes you double take what she is saying in her lyrics. Which only generates an honest expression.

Born in 1947, Riperton grew up in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama and dance at Chicago's Abraham Lincoln Center.[7] In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group the Gems. Her early affiliation with the Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backing vocals for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. While at Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection, from 1967 to 1971.
On April 5, 1975, Riperton reached the apex of her career with her No. 1 single "Lovin' You". The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album titled Perfect Angel. In January 1976, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer, and in April, she underwent a radical mastectomy.[4][8] By the time of diagnosis, the cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, she continued recording and touring. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with a breast cancer diagnosis, but she did not disclose that she was terminally ill. In 1977, she became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society's Courage Award, which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. Riperton died of breast cancer on July 12, 1979, at the age of 31.

Minnie led to Mariah Carey, leading to Ariana Grande, leading to Morissette Amon, new queen of whistles.
    Many other women-simgers covered this.
MR was a firestarter of whistle notes. 🤯
    RIP Minnie.
She leaves daughter Maya Rudolph here.

This is one of those rare songs where you know for sure that there is no one else on the face of the earth who could sing it like that. What a remarkable voice. And perfect instincts to inject genuine emotion and beauty without oversinging. Just beautiful.

I was honored to see her live at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in 74. I have to say she hit that note live just like in the video. She was amazing, and I cried then just like I cry every time I hear this again.

Her voice is four octave D3 to F#7 coloratura soprano range. The high note she hits is The whistle register (also called the flute register or flageolet register) is the highest register of the human voice, lying above the modal register and falsetto register. This register has a specific physiological production that is different from the other registers, and is so called because the timbre of the notes that are produced from this register is similar to that of a whistle.

Queen queen of the whistle. This was such a beautiful song she made for her beautiful daughter. Minnie was taken too early. We still needed much more great music like this from her.
