How do you feel when you have a conversation with somebody that can recite something you told them a year or more ago? Do you say to yourself, "How does this person even remember the details of what we talked about so long ago?" Do you like and respect the person more because they actually paid attention to what you said?
In this video I give the following 12 tips for how to retain more information:
#1: Ask Yourself Why You Remember What You Do - 1:17
    #2: Repetition - 3:08
#3: Debate the Topic with Two or Three People- 4:02
    #4: Share It - 5:06
    #5: Teach On It - 7:12
#6: Link it to Stories- 8:18
    #7: Look Things Up- 9:27
    #8: Implement What You Learn - 10:27
    #9: Energy and Stamina - 11:21
#10: Focus Energy Into One Subject - 12:38
    #11: Focused Attention - 13:58
    #12: Play the Memory Game - 15:28

I think we can group the 12 tips as follows:
    A. *Recall* (repetition, memory game)
    B. *Immersion* (debate, share, teach, link to stories, implement),
    C. *Attention* (understand before moving on, focus on one subject, focused attention)
    D. *Health* (energy)
The first tip ("it interests or affects us") explains why the above tips work.

Added this to my watch list. Both for my Adhd child who forgets everything. It's a real struggle and my Autistic child who allows himself to get drained to easily over videogames then has no energy for school.
We are watching this multiple times.
    Thank You

On the topic of retaining information: I think you should focus on shortening your lists (3-5 max in my opinion). People simply can't remember say 19 points.

I’m very appreciative of this video. Not only did you tell me HOW to retain information but you explained WHY I haven’t been able to. I had no freaking clue my weight (stamina, energy) had anything to do with it. I’m 32 and I can barely remember much unless like you said it interests me or affects me! So thank you. I already needed to lose weight but I found my motivation.

There are many ways you brain remember things such as interests, if something affects you, it is repeated a ton, you share something in conversation, you discuss and debate a topic or you teach something, linking it to a story, don't move on in a book if you don't understand a certain part, go perform what it is you learned, you need to be healthy to keep your brain sharp, dive deep into just one subject, be present when you're talking with someone, play a game with yourself to see how much you can recall after learning something

Great class and I'm happy when you mention Nikola Tesla. He is one of my idols and a fellow countryman. Many people don't know who he is and that because of his genius we have many of the things we have in todays time. He was a man ahead of his time that did things for the greater good. Also, everyday i look forward to starting my day, traveling to and from work and during the day when time permits listing to your classes and lessons on UA-cam. I can def. say i am a better man and more successful in my life because of your lessons. Thank you, God Bless and keep up the great work.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we have so much information coming to us every minute of the day. With the advent of smart phones we have news and entertainment at our fingertips, whenever we want it. I'm guilty of having spent too much time on my phone, so am mashing it a point to stay off of social media as much as possible. I look up videos on UA-cam if I want a tutorial on any given project I may be working on. I think our brains may be suffering from information overload, and it can be overwhelming... at least for me. I'm planning to do a digital detox.

    • @JDG-hq8gy
      @JDG-hq8gy 3 роки тому +2

Plus so much time is wasted changing subjects; walking to a different classroom, waiting for the teacher to arrive, going to your desk, opening your workbook, textbooks and laptops. And then you have to factor in that it takes on average 23 minutes for you to regain your focus after being distracted. School should have 3 double periods IMO

Thank you Patrick your video as usual is exstreamly helpful. My memory is really bad when it come to quoats, facts and figures. But when it comes to focus i can focus better than most. Personally i find that different activities and sports affect my thinking. For example playing squash speeds up my thinking and gives me several different view points about something; where as cycling gives me space to think especial when my mind is crowded by stress. It must also be said that your brain continues to work on thought you had during the day when you are sleeping.

Some feedback though; You should shorten your lists to below 10 points, and then expand on those 10 points further as viewers could remember 10 easier than 20.
This will normally be within most peoples attention span, rather than losing their interest after a while.
Your views per vid will shoot up if you do this

I am very good at remembering the meaning/content of information, but I am horrible at numbers, vocabulary or anything that is "random".

Hey patrick, I was curious to see if you could make a video on how to find the right company to work for and how to move up in the company? or if you could just simply do a quick response to me would be great! Thanks again for another great video

I'm like this people are surprised when I can remember something years ago even the doctor was surprised when I was pregnant and I could remember date time of birth how much I weighed and that's because I am a emotional person and everything that I went through gave me a emotion and as long as I remember the emotion I could remember what happened
