I absolutely love Silent Hill 4: The Room. It's my favorite of the series. I have just never found another horror game like it and it kinda sucks that this one is where the divide started with the Silent Hill community. It also sucks that Silent Hills was canceled because it looked like it might have been planning to expand on some of the ideas from SH4. But either way I still enjoy the first 4 Silent Hill games so even if we don't get anymore games in the series I'm content with what we already have.

When I played this game at night, I was unable to sleep, hearing Walter's laugh while chasing me... This particular game affected me a lot for a while after I ended it. To me is a masterpiece, something new team silent was able to create. The other game that affected me (although in a more emotional way) was Silent Hill 2. No game has stronger effect in your emotions... All of them except happiness ha! Also the music of this game is the best of the series... So Strong!
Homecoming was my first Silent Hill game and compared to other 360 games at the time I really liked it. Was a treat it was to find out it was one of the worst so it only got better playing the rest.
Oof. Cynthia's death always hit me hard. Maybe it was the combination of the music and how shallow Walter's reason for killing her was, but it always got me.

I got the impression the victims were kind of random. Walter just wanted that apartment, he didn't seem to get attached to people. He probably looked at everyone he met as a potential sacrifice and if they seemed to fit the requirements he killed them for the mom room ritual. I get it though, Walter had some fierce incel vibes. But SH2 turned sexual frustration into horror so well that Walter just came off as a bat shit crazy douche that killed 21 people literally for an apartment lol
@luvlols4462 it was far from random though. Pretty much each victim you encoubter had some deep personal tie to him. The ones he killed vefore the game begins were a mix of people he had ties to and randomly selected individuals though.
@DarthYuYevon SH2 was my first Silent Hill game and when 4 came out and I played it I almost felt betrayed by how shitty it was. It completely killed my love for the series for years. SH4 is a disgrace to the Silent Hill franchise in my opinion.

Those babies faces in the living room wall gives me nightmares. The first half of the game makes me feel the apartment is the safest I can be and other half makes me just don’t go back there. ( didn’t know the use of candle and medallion in my first play through cause I am lazy in reading notes)
SH4 is my favorite. I think it's the best of the series. It has the best story out of all of them, and it incorporates Silent Hill without getting too involved with the backstory of the town or personal problems of the protagonist. It's a straightforward fight between player and enemy, and the player can role-play Henry however they want. This is why I think Henry is actually the best protag of the series. Unlike the others, Henry is a blank slate protagonist, which allows players to project almost anything they want onto him and play him as they see fit. I wish they would do a high-quality remake of this and put in more options similar to a point and click mystery game for the first-person moments in the room. SH4 takes some getting used to, but it is an excellent game that still holds up today with plenty of surprises and various theories about the themes and story of the game.
For me Heather or whatever and just about any other female is best protag. I like or want to like some of the guys but I am not a guy so it gets old fast always having to play a male character. I think even if I were a guy , as long as they did a good job then I would prefer to play as a female. I can't wait to own and play Shattered Memories though. Oh , and the other SH games that I don't have yet such as The Room. But I really want the one with Heather as playable character and a good remake of Silent Hill 1 and 2. Especially the special edition version or a really good remake that lets you play as female after playing as the male or something. ( or changing up the story a bit / a lot like they did with Shattered Memories. The only thing is I didn't like that they paired Harry with Dahlia in that retelling. Should keep that stuff to fanfics and fan games. 😂 )
Right, they are Walter's monsters. So Henry being a blank slate protag changes nothing about that. It's just a way for the developers to give the players a protag they can project their own ideas onto.
I don’t agree that it has the best story out of all of them or that it’s the best game. I like SH4 and all the hate it got was for the most part undeserved, but SH2 had the best story and the best plot twist. It also did the best job or misleading you to be on the protagonists side until the end. There are still debates about the story to this day. It was a definite step up from SH1 and that’s why it’s regarded as iconic and tough to follow up.

You forgot about Dahlia Guilespie from SH1 who played a key role in brainwashing Walter at the Wish House. And also forgot to mention the ghost at 42:23. Thats Walter's first victim, Jimmy Stone. A member of the Valtiel sect who wore a red pyramid-like robe in rituals and was know as "The Red Devil". Jimmy Stone played a KEY role in James' manifestation of his monster aka Pyramid Head (see "Crimson and White Banquet for the Gods" from Silent Hill 2 for reference).

Story is deep that you have too play it again. Bit junky at times but ill never forget the horror i felt when my room, My sanctuary! started spawin demons in my room. My first silent Hill. I love all the games but this one is so different. And so cool that you mentioned event horizon engine to the gyroscope, EH is the scariest movie I have ever scene. It shows what a true evil dimension can do.
There needs to be a SH4 HD remake... honestly this was the most terrifying game I've ever played. We're not talking jumpscares, we're talking - the elements of this game and it's horror psychologically staying with me every night when I played it as a kid.. Well done to Konami for creating this masterpiece.
Notes on what I believe you should have mentioned that was worth mentioning: 1. You should have delved into the 21 sacraments since they all have assigned names and it makes sense of why each victim was picked 2. You commented on Henry’s lack of emotion or personality really but if you delved into what his assigned sacrament was, the 21st, it makes a lot more sense why he is the way he is. He is the “Receiver of Wisdom”, he is not necessarily meant to be an active participant in the process. Also it’s very worth talking about why Henry was so calm and unbothered with all of this happening to him aka Cynthia the bloody mess dying in his arms. There’s some great backstory to him that was worth sharing rip. 3. When you mentioned Eileen and the curse effect on her it would have been interesting for you to include what young Walter wrote on the tombstones. She can read a small amount if she isn’t cursed at all but if she’s max curse she can read all of them because her mind and being at that point is very closely aligned with that of Walter. I watched your other silent hill analysis videos, 1-3 so far, and I feel like this one was given less effort. Maybe you don’t enjoy the game as much and that’s fair but this was my favorite of the main four games, and my favorite overall, and I just feel like there was so much more worth diving into. Either way enjoyed the video for the most part just if you’re bored one day look more into the lore behind this game I don’t think you will be disappointed because the narrative behind it makes up for a lot of the game’s overall shortcomings

Was a fan of survival horror games since forever. However, the Room was released after I had moved into my first apartment after moving out of the barracks. Trying to sleep that first night after playing for a bit really messed me up. I didn't pick it up again until after my roommate moved in.

So my first silent Hill game was silent Hill 2 and I just loved it. My next silent Hill game was silent Hill 4 and I was just blown away. I love this game and I think it's so unique.

Hey man thank you so much for reuploading this video! I watched all your silent hill videos a while ago and wanted to watch this again but finally it's back!
I remember playing part 4 for the first time. Though it didn't seem to connect all that much with the prequels, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. It terrified me and there were even a few times I had to quit so that I could calm down and recollect myself. Especially when Robbie the Rabbit was pointing at me through the peephole...I did not see that coming and I literally turned off the PS2 when that scene occurred. I liked the game but you're right that the main protagonist is pretty boring and emotionless. I also remember having a difficult time with the final boss...so much so that I had to cheat in order to keep Eileen alive. I no longer have a functioning PS2 but maybe I should track down the PC version so I can revisit this one. There hasn't been another series to horrify me as much as SIlent Hill has over the years.
Henry is the reciever of wisdom each victim or soon to be victim has a personality trait. Seeing hes supposed to witness everything his personality trait is introspective and reflective. Also you can wear a medallion to exercise a ghost but it takes a whole one if not 90 % of it to do it. At least on the ps2 version
I know. I was just adding to what you wrote. I remember when I first played and saw how much one of the medallions cracked after just one haunting. I reloaded the save and stuck with holy candles. Don't make sense to use medallions when those are for protecting your health bar from ghosts.
This series deserves all the views I am a huge fan of RE and never thought silent hill could compare but after watching the series all I want to do is play these games
You forgot to mention that in one of the endings, the radio would report that Eileen died as well as Henry but he was disfigured beyond recognition. With Henry being my crush back then (lol yeah) that bothered me. I just thought he'd have his eyes gouged out as seen in the peephole haunting.
When I played this game's demo on jampack, I was always scared of the beginning scene with the zombie coming out of the wall. Even when I got past that part I would never try to go to where the subway cars are because of how creepy and terrifying the place and the floating zombies looked. I'd say this game with its 'bad' graphics did a really good job scaring me at least.
I live alone and just by watching this video and walkthrough on youtube I feel uncomfortable in my one room flat. Also as someone who has been very depressed and stayed weeks after weeks inside my house experiencing my own personal demons you can relate to the horror of the game very well.
Go for daily walks like to a park or forest or even mall. Put in earphones and listen to music or podcast or stream or just enjoy the nature. Trust me once it becomes a daily routine you feel better in general both body and mindwise.
Rabtoons really knocked their parody of SH4 out of the park. This game always stuck with me. It was the last game a friend and I played before he moved away

i thought that this game was the creepiest of the silent hill series. The hauntings of Henry's apartment, the NPCs who were unsettling in demeanor, the much more eerie enemies, and the absolutely spooky locales really upped the tension to me. i get the same chills from this game as i do from such games as the Fatal Frame series, the Siren series, the Dread Out series, and Echo Night Beyond which i believe are all tied in rank as the scariest games ever made.

I am playing the HD Collection at the moment, and can remember the writing on the wall about the hole very well. I wonder if this was on purpose, even at the time of the Silent Hill 2.
I personally have always liked Silent Hill 4... it's kinda clunky to play. The inventory can be a hassle. Henry's personality resembles a cardboard cutout more than an actual person. However... it will always have a soft spot in my heart, mostly because I love me some horror, and this game was the scariest game I played when I was a kid, and this is coming from someone who thought Resident Evil 4 was scary. The sounds the enemies make, the soundtrack, Cynthia (seriously whoever decided to make her the way she is as a ghost deserves mad props), the room itself. Seriously underrated if you ask me, but then again, that could just be some bias.
2024 and i re-run this game 2 times, still makes my nerve chill. this is unique SH yet intriguing becoz of antagonist Walter. that huge nurse monster at hospital always makes me to shit out. well done for this SH4
I'm one of the few Silent Hill fans, that I've meant anyways, who loves Silent Hill 4. I'm old enough to have played them as they were released and I defiantly agree with you about feeling unconformable in my apartment. At the time this game came out I and my wife lived in a very similar apartment. I remember hearing sounds next door while I was playing this game and freaking out. Fun times!
I played the hell out the demo for SH4 back when it came with a PlayStation mag I used to read. I don't know why I never played it, but I'll always regret it.
I absolutely adore the team silent games, even silent hill 4. Every game after the room was an insult to the franchise. Well, maybe except for shattered memories, because at least that one didn’t try to shove itself into the canon like the others.
I really like SH4. That ever oppressive feeling of confinement never lets up for a second as you desperately explore the different realms for a means to escape. That coupled with the very unnerving theme of voyeurism as you as Henry are compelled to participate in as you spy on his neighbour's activities. I found the suggestive imagery and themes in this game to also be some of the most disturbing in the series. To me, where SH4 falls down, and what always prevents me from completely enjoying it on a playthrough is in SH4's very ill conceived item storage system - the first and only game in the series to restrict inventory space like in Resident Evil. Having to constantly travel backwards and forwards between the different areas and Henry's appartment to pick up and drop things off because the inventory is full, coupled with all of the loading screens, I always find extremely tedious. Of course it is possible to avoid if you pick items up in certain order, but it would require a lot of forward planning before a playthrough. I think this particular design of the inventory in SH4 is there to force you into returning to Henry's room, further enforcing the themes of captivity and voyeurism I have already mentioned by making you feel compelled to have quick spy on Eileen through the peephole or on Henry's neighbours out of the window to see if anything new might has happened. But the fact is that after an initial playthrough you realise that usually nothing new usually does happen until after a particular event has happened or chapter conclusion and Henry returns home automatically. It's only later in the second half of the game that the hauntings in the appartment start to provide some extra entertainment. The item boxes in Resident Evil worked simply because there were plenty of them, encountered at regular intervals throughout the game. There's only ever one in SH4, always in the same location. And I think that this system could have been handled so much better, if not removed entirely.
Pro tip. Use weapons that don't break like the baseball bat or pipe, because if you use a charged attack with them, you are completely invincible through the entire attack animation.

You guys should check out Session 9, very underrated film. It reminds me of Silent Hill 2 & Downpour. Plus I also recommend the Machinist.

people who say that The Room has no connection to the previous games have absolutely no IDEA of whats happening in this game.
There needs to be a SH4 HD remake... honestly this was the most terrifying game I've ever played.
We're not talking jumpscares, we're talking - the elements of this game and it's horror psychologically staying with me every night when I played it as a kid..
Well done to Konami for creating this masterpiece.
Notes on what I believe you should have mentioned that was worth mentioning:
1. You should have delved into the 21 sacraments since they all have assigned names and it makes sense of why each victim was picked
2. You commented on Henry’s lack of emotion or personality really but if you delved into what his assigned sacrament was, the 21st, it makes a lot more sense why he is the way he is. He is the “Receiver of Wisdom”, he is not necessarily meant to be an active participant in the process. Also it’s very worth talking about why Henry was so calm and unbothered with all of this happening to him aka Cynthia the bloody mess dying in his arms. There’s some great backstory to him that was worth sharing rip.
3. When you mentioned Eileen and the curse effect on her it would have been interesting for you to include what young Walter wrote on the tombstones. She can read a small amount if she isn’t cursed at all but if she’s max curse she can read all of them because her mind and being at that point is very closely aligned with that of Walter.
I watched your other silent hill analysis videos, 1-3 so far, and I feel like this one was given less effort. Maybe you don’t enjoy the game as much and that’s fair but this was my favorite of the main four games, and my favorite overall, and I just feel like there was so much more worth diving into. Either way enjoyed the video for the most part just if you’re bored one day look more into the lore behind this game I don’t think you will be disappointed because the narrative behind it makes up for a lot of the game’s overall shortcomings

Was a fan of survival horror games since forever. However, the Room was released after I had moved into my first apartment after moving out of the barracks.
Trying to sleep that first night after playing for a bit really messed me up. I didn't pick it up again until after my roommate moved in.
Re-watching these in a sequence. I miss the "chandeelieeeeeer" hehe :)

So my first silent Hill game was silent Hill 2 and I just loved it. My next silent Hill game was silent Hill 4 and I was just blown away. I love this game and I think it's so unique.

I remember playing part 4 for the first time. Though it didn't seem to connect all that much with the prequels, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. It terrified me and there were even a few times I had to quit so that I could calm down and recollect myself. Especially when Robbie the Rabbit was pointing at me through the peephole...I did not see that coming and I literally turned off the PS2 when that scene occurred.
I liked the game but you're right that the main protagonist is pretty boring and emotionless. I also remember having a difficult time with the final boss...so much so that I had to cheat in order to keep Eileen alive.
I no longer have a functioning PS2 but maybe I should track down the PC version so I can revisit this one. There hasn't been another series to horrify me as much as SIlent Hill has over the years.

Henry is the reciever of wisdom each victim or soon to be victim has a personality trait. Seeing hes supposed to witness everything his personality trait is introspective and reflective.
Also you can wear a medallion to exercise a ghost but it takes a whole one if not 90 % of it to do it. At least on the ps2 version
And if it breaks the haunting will return to full power unless you equip another one. A holy candle can cleanse two or three hauntings at once.

I know. I was just adding to what you wrote. I remember when I first played and saw how much one of the medallions cracked after just one haunting. I reloaded the save and stuck with holy candles. Don't make sense to use medallions when those are for protecting your health bar from ghosts.

You forgot to mention that in one of the endings, the radio would report that Eileen died as well as Henry but he was disfigured beyond recognition. With Henry being my crush back then (lol yeah) that bothered me. I just thought he'd have his eyes gouged out as seen in the peephole haunting.

When I played this game's demo on jampack, I was always scared of the beginning scene with the zombie coming out of the wall. Even when I got past that part I would never try to go to where the subway cars are because of how creepy and terrifying the place and the floating zombies looked. I'd say this game with its 'bad' graphics did a really good job scaring me at least.

I live alone and just by watching this video and walkthrough on youtube I feel uncomfortable in my one room flat. Also as someone who has been very depressed and stayed weeks after weeks inside my house experiencing my own personal demons you can relate to the horror of the game very well.
Hang in there and talk to somebody. Maybe meet your friends or family members. What you are writing about doesn't sound really healthy.
Go for daily walks like to a park or forest or even mall. Put in earphones and listen to music or podcast or stream or just enjoy the nature. Trust me once it becomes a daily routine you feel better in general both body and mindwise.

i thought that this game was the creepiest of the silent hill series. The hauntings of Henry's apartment, the NPCs who were unsettling in demeanor, the much more eerie enemies, and the absolutely spooky locales really upped the tension to me. i get the same chills from this game as i do from such games as the Fatal Frame series, the Siren series, the Dread Out series, and Echo Night Beyond which i believe are all tied in rank as the scariest games ever made.
I think I'm the only person who isn't ashamed to say Silent Hill 4 is my favorite Silent Hill game...

I am playing the HD Collection at the moment, and can remember the writing on the wall about the hole very well. I wonder if this was on purpose, even at the time of the Silent Hill 2.

This game was my favorite of the series. Dealing with a serial killer and the paranormal made this game the most interesting.
I personally have always liked Silent Hill 4... it's kinda clunky to play. The inventory can be a hassle. Henry's personality resembles a cardboard cutout more than an actual person. However... it will always have a soft spot in my heart, mostly because I love me some horror, and this game was the scariest game I played when I was a kid, and this is coming from someone who thought Resident Evil 4 was scary. The sounds the enemies make, the soundtrack, Cynthia (seriously whoever decided to make her the way she is as a ghost deserves mad props), the room itself. Seriously underrated if you ask me, but then again, that could just be some bias.

I'm one of the few Silent Hill fans, that I've meant anyways, who loves Silent Hill 4. I'm old enough to have played them as they were released and I defiantly agree with you about feeling unconformable in my apartment. At the time this game came out I and my wife lived in a very similar apartment. I remember hearing sounds next door while I was playing this game and freaking out. Fun times!
I played the hell out the demo for SH4 back when it came with a PlayStation mag I used to read. I don't know why I never played it, but I'll always regret it.

I absolutely adore the team silent games, even silent hill 4. Every game after the room was an insult to the franchise. Well, maybe except for shattered memories, because at least that one didn’t try to shove itself into the canon like the others.
And I'm just now remembering that Everytime my friend and I attached the bottom we yelled "smack that ass"!!!
I really like SH4. That ever oppressive feeling of confinement never lets up for a second as you desperately explore the different realms for a means to escape. That coupled with the very unnerving theme of voyeurism as you as Henry are compelled to participate in as you spy on his neighbour's activities. I found the suggestive imagery and themes in this game to also be some of the most disturbing in the series.
To me, where SH4 falls down, and what always prevents me from completely enjoying it on a playthrough is in SH4's very ill conceived item storage system - the first and only game in the series to restrict inventory space like in Resident Evil.
Having to constantly travel backwards and forwards between the different areas and Henry's appartment to pick up and drop things off because the inventory is full, coupled with all of the loading screens, I always find extremely tedious. Of course it is possible to avoid if you pick items up in certain order, but it would require a lot of forward planning before a playthrough.
I think this particular design of the inventory in SH4 is there to force you into returning to Henry's room, further enforcing the themes of captivity and voyeurism I have already mentioned by making you feel compelled to have quick spy on Eileen through the peephole or on Henry's neighbours out of the window to see if anything new might has happened. But the fact is that after an initial playthrough you realise that usually nothing new usually does happen until after a particular event has happened or chapter conclusion and Henry returns home automatically. It's only later in the second half of the game that the hauntings in the appartment start to provide some extra entertainment.
The item boxes in Resident Evil worked simply because there were plenty of them, encountered at regular intervals throughout the game. There's only ever one in SH4, always in the same location. And I think that this system could have been handled so much better, if not removed entirely.
This is the game that stays with me the most.
I'm sorry but no monster in horror yet can even hold a candle to the twin victim.
Pro tip. Use weapons that don't break like the baseball bat or pipe, because if you use a charged attack with them, you are completely invincible through the entire attack animation.
