  • Silent Hill 4: The Room is a fascinatingly flawed title, but unfortunately it is those flaws that obscures what makes it great. My aim with this analysis is to look past its deficiencies and reveal the depth that makes it a worthwhile experience.

If you peer through the bloody peephole, you see Henry with his eyes gouged out murmuring the 21 sacraments. That was the best "haunting"

Agreed. I actually get really hype when I see the peephole leaking. Screencap time.
But the one that upset me the most was the jeans cat. I just can't tolerate that sound. My pet cat hates it, too.
Funniest one is probably the Silent Hill shoes trying to run off, leaving stains. If you don't count the decapitated floating DeSalvo head easter egg, that is. Always cracks me up when I spot him drifting by.

I've always been under the impression that Henry is a hikikomori. His poor social skills and affectless personality are indicators. He has no real familial or social attachments. His career is distant from human interaction, mainly employed to photograph landscapes. Talk about the ultimate violation for someone suffering from this condition! His home is being invaded from every angle. His self-imposed prison is physically, _violently_ manifested. He's forced out in every way, to interact with a living nightmare!
[Broken to hide spoilers. Also, edits.]
But sometimes, that's what Silent Hill is trying to do. Just like the Sunderland case, the power there is trying to show the called their flaws and sins. Although their suffering is great, the good endings reward and repair them. Henry stepped out into the daylight, and sought out Eileen. He doesn't need to be shut-in any longer, there's a whole world outside that damned apartment.
All that aside, excellent essay! You've done a great job illustrating the claustrophobia and paranoia of having your space invaded.

Why is SH4 so underrated? I actually love it so much that I ended up prefering it over SH2, but that's just my opinion! The game is so immersive, atmospheric and also unnerving pratically all the time, the story is just genius and characters are very well constructed. Not to mention the soundtrack, perfect just as in the previous games.

For me, despite loving 4 as well, I think what makes 2 the objectively better game is that it's more about James dealing with his trauma and demons than what we get in 4 from Henry. I'm no expert on analysis, but I feel like 2 has the much deeper story, a story that encourages self reflection more than 4 does by the end. Combine that with 4 having some general polish issues and poor design choices and you can sort of see why it's the odd one out of the original games. Again, I still love it so much, and I also prefer Silent Hill 1 and 3 over 2. But if I were to be objective and put personal opinions aside, 2 is the best entry we've gotten so far.

finally got around to giving this game a chance and finished it last night, Watching this video brought a huge smile to my face. I felt exactly the same way. I love how you analyzed the game for what it IS and not how it “should” have followed its predecessors. This game will always stick with me for its OWN reasons, as did SH2 stuck with me for its own and so on so forth. As frustrating as this game was, the anxiety & “scaryness” this game trifled me with was fucking insane. might be shot for saying this but in my opinion, this was the scariest one out of the series. Almost everything I see on this game seems to be how it is, as you said, the weakest game of the original era, so it's refreshing to see the game dissected for what it is, not what it isn't.
I actually think building a horror structure off of the conceit of "home" and the ideas and comforts it should represent is fascinating and it feels like a fresh and innovative concept even after all this time.
I hope more people, especially people who skipped this game due to the negative discourse around it, can see this video and give it a chance. I feel like too often the flaws of a game become the only conversation around it, especially in a long running series.

What is so interesting is that I can definitely relate to the feeling of your home not feeling like a safe place. I wouldn't go as far as to say that my childhood was abusive, but there were definitely difficulties at home. There's nothing more terrifying then having to go home to someone who you are afraid of, even if it is illogical. I know that lots of people can relate to this feeling, especially those who have been in more abusive situations than what I was in. There is a similar premise that occurs within a story I'm working on, and I think that Silent Hill 4 comes closest to this feeling I am trying to convey.

This is a really good video. I was in some situations lately where home was both a burden to go back to but also other places I ventured to as a replacement were in shit, so it created a lot of discomfort. The Pandemic makes this more apparent. I never made it too far into this game. I did watch all the cutscenes later, though. Some of the stuff about the villain did resonate quite a bit. I always felt the intro to this game was fantastic. I think the two headed monsters are some of the scariest in gaming too. But I think I was a bit worn on the series by the time I played the game, and some frustrations like the puzzles in the prison level, just turned me away from ever finishing the game.

Excellent analysis and video. 8/10. Would've been a flawless video had it not been for some of your findings.
One thing I dislike about the fandom surrounding the Silent Hill franchise is some of the liberties people take in interpreting how things are presented within the games. I know it's set up that way in many cases, but some things are just inarguable. Case and point..... "black"....."patch".... behind the dresser? It's an obvious attempt at digging a hole through the wall, and from what can be discerned from it, it took a hell of a lot of effort. The small hole that he managed to create that allows for one to peer through to the room ahead was the BEST Joseph could do, and shows that whatever had a hold of the room had reinforced the walls.
That said, it being hidden behind the dresser could merely be rationalized away as nothing more than parts of the other world manifesting into the current room. And no, what I'm saying is not repeating your "corruption and spreading it" point, as it's actually quite pure, in every sense of the word - I'm not concerned for norms and customs regarding ettiquette and being proper in cases such as these, I'm only worried for what's factually, and objectively right, and in this instance, if you have Cthulu terrorizing you in your room, and all other attempts to get in contact with me, your next door neighbor, has failed, I don't give a crap how you go about doing it or if you find me in the craziest, compromised position.....KNOCK MY ENTIRE WALL OUT IF YOU HAVE TO IN ORDER TO WARN ME THAT THAT IT AIN'T SAFE HERE ANYMORE. We'll make it out of here together, no questions asked, even if it means leaving a trail of toilet paper all the way back to the bathroom I came out of.
Decency? Privacy? Perspective, opinions, and point of view? What? Man, forget all of that. I only want the RIGHT conclusion - get me out of there. Literally, if you blew through my wall and I could plainly see demons, blood guts and ass flying out of the area you just came from, I'm not asking you a motherfuckin thing, we're both out of there. That's it. And anyone with any sense would do the same.

Unfortunately, I couldn't complete the game. I was playing pass-the-pad style and neither of us could stab the subway ghost, which made the level pretty much unplayable, the unpolished aspects were grating, and the magic of the apartment sections had worn off. I still really appreciate dissections because I feel it could have been so much better, and there's so much to learn from it - those first-person sections defined survival horror in the 2010s.

@@DanielSantosAnalysis I guess just adds more pressure with the ghosts, also enemies in general were much scarier and more aggressive and having to worry about another persons safety made it even more stressful. In SH2 you get so much ammo and healing and the enemies all suck, haha SH2 is my favorite one still, but is only scary through it's incredible atmosphere as you're not ever in any real danger in my opinion.

Personally, I didn't like the direction they went with Silent Hill 4. It felt too "game like" with the hub world of the apartment.
I hated the inventory screen, since it was in game.
Also the ghost enemies able to harm you by just being next to you, and being unstoppable, was more annoying than scary.
Combat was clunky in a bad way, with its destructible weapons.
Also, having to revist each location twice, just felt like cheap game design.
The narrative choice to have Walter believe room 302 was his mother is just baffling, perhaps it was a translation issue. Like it was actually a way to get back to his mother, but that got lost in translation.
I couldn't get past these hiccups and never finished the game, even though I pre-ordered it.

Walter only believed the room was his mother as a child, he didnt continue to believe it as an adult. It was moreso a method to tie into the symbolism of the room itself representing the womb.
