    The "enter me, he says in parentheses" line is also another subtle musical theater reference to stage directions. In a script, there will often be lines such as "Enter *insert character name* " when a character comes on stage, and those lines are often in italics or parentheses to denote that they are not spoken but merely directions. Here, Hamilton is speaking the "stage directions", which shows off his ego. But yeah, as another comment said, this show has so many references to musical theater in general, as well as to specific shows and hip hop songs/artists.

    As someone with a complex medical history, (91 surgeries, 4 nearly fatal health crises) "for the first time, I'm thinking past tomorrow" is a really impactful line that for some reason is only just now hitting me. "I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory" is another line that I really relate to. The most recent of those 4 nearly fatal health crises was back in 2017, when I was 17, and I had to be put into a medically-induced coma that lasted 10 days, and I can't remember much about what happened right before the drugs kicked in, but I do know that I looked my mom in the face and said "This time, I'm going to die." Do I regret saying that to her? YES. Do I still believe I should've died? ABSOLUTELY. I had gone septic. I 100% should've died. When they brought me back out of the coma was when things got horrible. Going septic can fuck up your brain and make it do some unpleasant stuff. I hallucinated and since it was shortly after the Las Vegas sniper, I had a delusion that a sniper was aiming at my window. Thankfully, that's the most recent of my medical PTSD. I've been generally healthy since.
    (DAMN, I forgot how wordy I can get when discussing my medical trauma. I'm so used to only being wordy with things I'm passionate about.)

      I guess this is controversial, ody is a very witty yet patient guy. He's almost a complete opposite to hamy. Ody is a very methodical thinker who constantly makes use of things for the future and is very patient, he is literally never impulsive in the musical unless he's being influenced by an outside factor. Guys he's been in a war for a long ass time and out at sea for around 12 years or so without seeing his family and watching people around him die, people don't die cause he makes impulsive decisions that endanger his crew but instead die due to things outside his control REMINDER that the only reason cyclops didn't kill the whole crew is because he had the foresite to put lotus in the wine which btw would have also doomed his crew had he not gone to investigate and keep in mind the rash decision to reveal his name after he witness his crew and child hood best friend die... as for thunder saga HE HAD SPENT 12 YEARS AND LOST MORE THAN HALF HIS CREW TO GODS!!! Of course he would break, and even then people didn't die from his impulsive decisions (the deaths at the cave were a rational though immoral decision) but by their own by killing the cows which ody warned them not to. Hamy would have broken and saced his crew in like 2 months

    WARNING: This is a spoiler for a lyric at the very end of the musical, so don't look at this comment if you haven't already seen it.
    I really like that the "woah, woah, woah" motif doesn't get its name until the very end, where Hamilton says "Laurens leads a soldiers' chorus on the other side". Up until that point, we've heard the motif a lot, with enough context to figure out the meaning, but it doesn't get the name "soldiers' chorus" until the very end. Just a neat detail :)

    After coming from the Epic reactions, I’m really looking forward to hearing Casper’s analyses of not only the vocals and storyline, but also the instrumentals. Accompaniment is a facet of music that I don’t give as much attention as I probably should. I’m usually laser-focused on the singers, so my mind is blown when he picks apart the instrumental and points out its’ implications for the characters and story as a whole. Hope you enjoy the rest of the musical!

    A few months late to this. But something that I didn’t see mentioned in comments is about the open high hat drumming discussed at 19:09 is also extremely symbolic. As someone who grew up visiting battle locations and watching live reenactments, that particular beat is permanently in my brain. It brings with it foreboding for the upcoming battle almost like the calm before the storm. Also the loss of youth and innocence because they were played by boys often too young to actually fight. So these boys would play the drums as a way to communicate commands to the soldiers. This puts the boys at the frontline of battle.
    So having that open high hat here shows Alexander’s naivety when it comes to the realities of war, even knowing what all he’s been through and seen in his life up to this point.

    It´s not so in front here but later on notice also the clothing of the characters. In the beginning all the main characters wear white coats (or a white dress) EXCEPT Aaron Burr and then when Hamilton is getting his brown coat on his way to New York HIS story really sets off.
    During the Musical they change coats depending on what they are doing and who they are and i can´t say more without spoiler i think

      They're all generic people among a chorus of multitudes until their interactions with Hamilton (or Burr, in the case of Hamilton) bring their characters into full color. They only really become important to history when someone tells their story.

  • @lightstep1433
    @lightstep1433 25 днів тому

    Fun historical fact, "Im only 19 but my mind is older" could actually be a factual statement. A family member, at a court hearing after thr death of Hamilton's mother, reported that Hamilton was 13. Based on the date of that hearing, he would have been born then in 1755. On every document and in every conversation, Hamilton said his birthday was in 1757. If he did actually lie, he likely did that to appear more mature then he actually was and potentially secure better and more opportunities like apprenticeships.

    It feels so weird to hear him be called John, because there are a lot of Johns in American history, (John Adams comes to mind) so most people call him Laurens. It also feels weird to call Burr Aaron.

    Please don't apologize for likening one piece of art to another -- we all can learn a lot about the individual pieces by comparing and contrasting them, plus as viewers/listeners we all bring our own experiences with us when we're engaging with new things: it is only natural that you'd compare Hamilton to Epic (or whatever other frame of reference you choose to use!).

    I think Epic kinda has to be very story-like because it's just the music, so the audience can't visually interpret what is happening, whereas this is a lot more music-focused since it has actual visual performance. Some of the stuff is harder to follow when just listening to the soundtrack, so I was elated when I learned it was going to be on Disney+.
