    Love your videos! I need to get my act together and start playing with the combination of simply appliqué and the scan and cut. Thinking about all the cute coloring books out there but I am not sure you could separate layers ? Maybe simple designs. Keep those videos coming. I so love to hear you laugh and see what you are up to.

      Coloring books are a great way to make fabulous applique patterns with the SNC and Simply Applique. It's fairly easy to take a piece of copy paper and just trace the individual pieces you want on different places on the paper and then scan that in to the SNC. Then either on the SNC screen or in the Brother Canvas you can move them around to make room for the fabric pieces to be cut. Then take the additional step to save the .fcm file to a USB and import into SA for the embroidery applique file. It's so simple and fun. Enjoy!

      Thanks for watching! You can always do applique by machine the old fashioned way. You might check pawn shops, yard sales, and Craig's list for a new-to-you machine if you're in the market for one. I check both all the time to see if there's one I'd like to have. That's how I got my Quattro for $$$$ less than originally priced. One man's trash... :)

      YAY!!! You have made my day!! I love that my videos have inspired you to a new chapter in your quilting/sewing adventures! I hope my videos have given enough information for you to try something out that is simple and you must do practice tests first with scraps. You want to use simple line designs without a lot of inside stitching... Like the outline of a leaf vs. the leaf with all the veins inside...hope that makes sense. Once you get good, you can add inside stitching too. So fun!! Enjoy!

    Hi! Becky thanks so much for your videos... I am not new to embroidery I own 2 Husqvarna Designer Diamond machine, but I am new to appliqueing and had wanted to learn how. I don't like the fact of cutting and sewing those little pieces ,so I never got into appliqueing. So, you made it look so easy with these tools. I just bought the Simply Appique from All Brand also I just got the Brother Scan N Cut SDX 230D.

    I posted once before about how to position the appliques after they were created. I don't have a camera machine and the little snowmen weren't working for me. I found a video "Easy and Accurate Placement of Machine Embroidery Applique Shapes for Large Designs" by Marjorie Busby. Hope it's okay that I posted this. I have seen several other people posting about the same problem. It takes a little time but it solved my problem. Again. Thank you for your great tutorials. You have a placement line, just make sure your center is marked on your fabric, your needle automatically goes to center. Stitch out your placement, then add your Rhino, then tackdown, then final satin, blanket, etc.

    Wow! That was 40 minutes long. Wonder why I had trouble with only 30. Anyway, very generous of you! I still can't decide if it would help with my multiple piece butterfly quilt. Each butterfly could have 6 to 10 pieces -- tiny pieces! And they would all be a different fabric. I can certainly see how it would be wonderful for what you are doing. Doesn't the IQ Designer in the embroidery machine scan things and turn them into applique? I'm pretty sure my Artista software will do it with a regular scanner. Thanks for the awesome tutorial!!!

  • @Pambulmann
    @Pambulmann 5 років тому

    Becky, GREAT tutorial! I'm working on my applique skills so very timely for me! I stopped buying the fabric support sheets for my scan n cut. Instead, I use clear contact paper (sticking the non sticky side of the contact paper to the mat). It is about the same sticky, and you can cut it for which ever size mat you're using. I don't feel so bad about deciding to replace when they get worn out since you can buy a whole roll of the contact paper for a couple of bucks!

    GREAT! video, Becky. I have a scan n cut, the low-buck model. I have gone thru so many mats because they lose their stickiness. How do you refresh them? Love the applique software demo. That may be my next purchase.

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  5 років тому

      I bought some alcohol-free wipes at Walmart and every so often, I try to get the extra threads off the mat as much as possible. That seems to help. My mats are lasting probably less than normal too because fabric leaves fuzz all over them which dulls the sticky very quickly. I haven't tried layering a new fabric support sheet on top of an old one yet but that is next on my list to try.

    That is the cutest rhino Becky. Do you have to have an embroidery machine to use this or can you just do regular appliqué on your sewing machine? I do not have an embroidery machine. Thanks.

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  5 років тому

      Kay, Simply Applique creates an embroidery file but no, you do not have to have an embroidery machine to do applique. You would simply trace the image onto the back of a piece of Heat-n-Bond, iron the HNB onto a piece of fabric, cut it out along the drawn line, and then stitch it down by machine. That's the old school way of doing applique and can be done without an embroidery machine. But if you want to use Simply Applique, you'd need an embroidery machine.

    Thanks for this tutorial. I have the DX model, they did an update because of mat issues. I bought a new 24" mat and didn't get a chance to use it until after the update. It wouldn't let me scan it to see where the material was. My local quilt store told me to call Brother because it was due to the update and they should send me a new one. Brother told me you can only cut with that mat. Guess I will be calling them again!

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  5 років тому

      I had heard that the DX doesn't use the 24" mat. Is that the problem? I cant imagine they'd make a machine that doesn't use it but that's what a commenter told me. Hope you can get this worked out.

    • @coreyfisher3167
      @coreyfisher3167 5 років тому

      @@PowerToolsWithThread they make one specifically for the dx machines. The problem was people were having loading any mat into them after a while. I never had that problem, I could load it and cut on it, but I couldn't scan it to see where my material laid on the screen so I could place my fabric in the right spot, just like you did. That makes no sense.

    I just purchased my scan n cut dx. I have several Anita Goodesigns that are appliqué s and I would like to use my scan n cut to make the designs. There are no templates with the program. How can I make a template? I sure like your videos. I lean a lot.

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  4 роки тому +1

      I don't think you need a template. On the CD, for the appliques there might be files with a file type of .svg. (Kimberbell does this on their CDs). If there are SVG files, you can load those onto a USB stick and then put the USB in the Scan N Cut (SNC) and cut out the fabric portions. If there aren't any SVG files on the CD, you'll have to do it the old fashioned way of cutting the excess fabric off after the tack down stitch. That is, unless you have some fancy embroidery software that can create an SVG file for you from the embroidery design. OH! If there is a .pdf file of the applique designs on the CD with images of the design, you need to print out that page and then you can scan that in to the SNC and create the cut files from there.

    I wonder if I could take a shape, like your rhino,, use my wand scanner to scan and save it, import it into my Cricut, and cut it out!

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  4 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure if the wand will save to svg. I think it saves to .jpg or at most .pdf. But Cricut has a way using their phone app to print a calibration page to calibrate your phone, then take the pic of the shape and import into the Cricut cloud. The cloud (or the app - I'm not sure) will create the .svg to send to your Cricut to cut it out. Save the .svg from the Cricut cloud into your laptop, then upload that into the Brother Canvas cloud and then download the .fcm file created by Canvas to your laptop to import into Simply Applique. It's clunky, but it will work. That is the rig-a-ma-role I had to go through with Silhouette. Life's too short. Adios Silhouette and Hello Scan N Cut!

      Hi Angela! The user guide definitely helps and you're right that the program isn't very forthcoming about where it's at. There are actually two places where you can find info. How do you know what size to make satin stitch or blanket in simply appliqué. I downloaded free trial of simply appliqué but found it confusing

      I normally use the default settings that the software gives me, which is a 2.0 width. I do like to bring the tack down stitch in just a bit like I did on this video to make sure I catch the edges of the fabric...especially the tiny parts. If you'd like to make the final satin stitch wider or more narrow, I'd put that scrap basket of yours to work and make several tests until you're happy with the result. Don't forget, if you don't use the SNC to pre-cut your applique pieces, you can always lay a larger piece of fabric down over the placement line, then tack it down, cut away the excess with your scissors, and then do the final satin stitch which will fully cover the first two lines of stitching. Enjoy!

      Using Cricut is hard because it's difficult to scan in an image. However if you were to create an account on the Brother Canvas you could upload any SVG files to the Canvas and then download them to your laptop to be used in Simply Applique.

      The manufacturer says it does not. However, I've heard that it will work if the Windows module is installed on a Mac. But I do not know that for sure.

    How do I do this using Embird please

      I'm sorry but I don't know Embird software. If Embird has a feature to import .fcm files, then it should be able to do it.

    Is the brother canvas or the simply appliqué paid programs or do they come free with the machine?

      The Canvas is free to have an account and play around in it. It has a lot of free projects in it too that you can download to a SNC cutting machine for no charge. I don't think it creates a file type that can be read by the Cricut or Silhouette, but I'm not sure. Simply Applique does not come free with the machine, but I've had commenters say there is a free version that can be downloaded. I would expect that the abilities of the free version are very limited.
