Lo F being a good snowboarder and a good mountaineer are different things, if you’re a gnarly snowboarder and want to hit the back country find some more experienced people to guide you, even the most experienced mountaineers almost always use local guides. That being said, he survived and wasn’t near the edge, even the most experienced people make mistakes, I don’t know this guys level of experience cause I’m just a guy in the youtube comments, but the idea that if you’re good at riding a board you’re safe to traverse back country solo is dangerous which is why I gotta say something. Take all the Avalanche courses you can!! It appears from the other comments that you have...er...but...they do you no good if there is nobody on hill with the receiving end on that beacon...going out of bounds and into 'lanche terrain alone is a monumental error in judgement. You may have the skill set to turn, but there are probably a lot of people you'd seriously bum out if you got buried, alone, in a far away area where nobody knew to look. I hope you rethink this in the near future...snow will fall soon, and we'd all like you to keep posting sweet turns with money tunes...just sayin'...
The thing that no one knows from this video is that I had talked with ski patrol before going out, some of whom are friends and they knew where I was and about the avalanche before I returned. The big picture is not always captured on a video. Just saying. Also I don't really care what people say about going solo into the backcountry. I enjoy it with partners but sometimes I enjoy going alone. another 9 years or so have gone by since this video and I'm still riding backcountry and sometimes I'm solo.

@@Planittravel Holy crap. Just saw this the first time. That close to dying. A foot or two. I would have walked back the way I had come up after that. That avalanche it wouldn't have mattered zip if you had a buddy along or a trauma surgeon with a Level One Trauma Center at the bottom. You go over that edge and that's it. They may find you with the beacon but it's not a rescue, it's a recovery. Huge brass ones to make turns after that close call. Good to see that you're still safe.
@Mac Busby Why do you care? And a partner would not have been able to stop me from falling off the side of a mountain. It's not like I would have been on belay. Had I fallen I would have fallen 1000 feet or so. Probably would not have survived, with or without a partner. But I didn't fall and life goes on. Maybe one day the mountain will get me or maybe I'll die of the Corona virus next week. Life isn't really in control and death is coming for all of us. Might as well enjoy the ride. 😁

Legit line you rode! Recognize those peaks anywhere. I'm an old guy, Pali was my first cornice in 7th grade when the original lift was brand new in like 1979. 🤣 So much of that area was off piste back then. Had a few close calls myself over the years. So you went up the ridgeline above the East Wall and dropped off that backside? Gonna have to get out for some slush and a beer at the Beach this spring - You've inspired me - cheers! 😆🤙
you nailed it! not many people know where this terrain is. this is an older video but I still try to get up and ride this terrain in the spring at least once if I can. It's still all off piste back there.

+Dean M You couldn't be more right. It's amazing how many avalanche experts there are on youtube. This has been going on since I posted this video 6 years ago. I'm pretty certain most of these experts on here have never even skied let alone gone out into the backcountry.

+laura marshall I've said it like a hundred times for six years since I posted this video, I left the ski area boundaries through a gate. it was not closed.
We hiked a ridge and saw it was unstable. We dropped down the side and stayed close to the trees. As we were crossing out the bottom some half-wit set the ridge going above us. Despite us shouting for him to stay off. Of course, he managed to stay out of trouble but we were partially buried. If I ever find that guy I'm gonna stamp on his head until it pops.
You are forgetting the golden rule of back country travel: NEVER go without a partner.

Very dangerous to be near avalanches alone. If you get stuck under 4 feet of snow, who is there to dig you out??
+I Forgot My Username This was a cornice break, not an avalanche. Depending on conditions, it likely triggered a slide when the cornice hit the snow below it, but what you saw wasn't an avalanche.

It's actually not that dangerous at all. I get buried frequently and I just bust out my shovel and dig myself out.
+Michael Fox Your right it is a cornice break but you can also see the avalanche running out down below. Technically any debris falling down the side of a mountain is an avalanche, whether it's rocks, snow, cornice breaks or baby seals.

I'm going to have to assume you have never dug yourself out from a complete avalanche burial unless you have video to prove it.
The snow constricts you like concrete once it stops moving. You're lucky if you can even move your hands to reach your shovel, let alone dig with it. If it were so easy to simply dig yourself out, few people would be killed in avalanches. There's no substitute for having educated and experienced partners, beacons, and shovels with which to dig each other out. If you're on your own and get buried, you're done, shovel or no.

When I hear of "people dying in a backcountry skiing accident" ....now I can picture why. That has to be some of the sketchiest footage I have ever seen. I have snowboarded in an out of bounds avalanche warning area and I almost shit my pants doing it, but this is a whole other level. That ride down though looked pretty epic. This is a great video

yeah, even with CAIC and Winter Park checking on the Vasque Cirque, CO is unpredictable. beacon, probe, shovel, and an AVY 1 are pretty much required. the spike in skiers in the bc dying this year is mostly correlated with the massive number of newbies not knowing about CAIC, terrain traps, digging pits, and the other basics.

well said, and curiosity is what suckered me to far out onto this cornice. I was trying to see a specific line that has a terrifying cornice drop into a chute, needless to say after the thing popped off I picked a more mellow line for the day. I was just happy that I wasn't hucking off the thing when it went.

Actually I had avy gear not that it freaking mattered since I was alone and Its not that uncommon to ride back-country solo. I do things solo often. If you think I was walking in a dangerous area you should have seen the line I was trying to get into. What some people are comfortable doing appears to be reckless to others, but to each his own. I certainly don't care how reckless or safe other people choose to live there lives, but then again I'm to busy living my own reckless life to care.
I almost said something about being wreckless and ignorant until I read this. Now your just my hero because of that last sentence 🤘 get busy living fuckers!!!

Let that be a lesson to ya! Stay back at the rocks until you find a break in the line of cornices before approaching the edge.
Ten years later tho.... And the guy is STILL HERE, and still getting after it. It really is Freedom of the Hills. Or Free Dumb. Its really the individual's decision. Solo backcountry riders pursuing serious objectives are a special breed. I probably have over 2000 days solo over the course of 3 decades. Dont have kids. Do ski with others regularly. Dont always find them to be too safe to be around, and do mind stopping five times per run to work out safe logistics. I Do carry plenty of gear, have a contact, and a SPOT locator.
Overall, travelling in avalanche terrain is quite RISKY. Wouldn't just come out and recommend what I do solo. Its just where I find Joy and Peace. Comfort (somewhat) for RISK has to be quite high tho.
Anyone who gets after it at this level will get into the shit. The number of Avalanche forecasters, Ski patrollers, and Ski guides getting slid or involved in close calls are too numerous to mention. Hopefully they walk away with a lesson. Sometimes they are killed. Mostly, you wont hear about it... Avalanche forecasters SOLO as part of their job....Same as the Soloists. Soloists are just not getting paid. This debate will never end....

Well said and I couldn’t agree more. I’m avid climber and I rope solo a lot as well. Don’t have to find a partner and can go get after it instead of sitting on the sofa watching UA-cam videos. I think solo missions are great provided you take some extra precautions. Most of these armchair monkeys commenting on this decade old footage have never been into serious terrain or even off a groomer. Haha

Avalanche happens yeah, people are curious, extreme people are extremely curious, and it will always be like that. Its not safe to live anyway, noone have survived it yet! But lets make adventures as safe as possible, so one can tell a tale, like you just did. Ride on!

I am all for living life to the max and defining 'risk' for oneself. But didn't you see the great line of cornices along that ridge you were traversing? Crickey!

That avalanche is how someone died in the cascades this winter. (Stepped through a cornice and it released) Lesson: Don't walk so close to the edge.

i just started boarding this year. been skiing before as well. personally i found boarding easier, and wayyyy more fun. greatest choice ever was buying everything so i fealt guilty if i didnt put it to use. Best thing you can do, buy the gear, buy a pass somewhere, and just keep going as much as your freetime will allow. youll learn. and if youre dedicated it wont take very long at all. one lesson to learn basics and ediquette will help. ask every question you want. and youll be fine from there.

Those other guy's don't know what they're talking about. Yes it may be dangerous but give the guy a break, if he had talked with snow patrol and they knew where he was then let him be. I know that being that close to an avalanche that's deadly is the biggest adrenaline rush you can ever have, in my opinion and i love the feeling afterwards knowing you've survived close death =P

Wow, that is so cool. I've never seen one from that angle before. I still don't know if I would call that huge though. Still pretty neat. I have triggered a couple slides in Vail, but both times I didn't have my GoPro turned on.

Different people are just comfortable with different skinning levels I think is the key "takeaway" here :)
1 my partner got sick, couldn't make it, but I have ridden solo a lot.
2 I had avalanche gear, not that it would do any good being alone so that is kind of a moot point. 3 I talked with three ski patrol about conditions and terrain, and I was heading into an area I have been riding for 15 years so I was familiar with it. Yes I was stupidly to close to the cornice but I have knocked loose dozens upon dozens of avalanches and my comfort zone is probably bordering stupidity :)

Oh I have learned, but I also hope to stay lucky. I have popped off many cornices over the years, one time taking me with it, to many close calls with avalanches not to have learned at least a few things. In fact I don't even do much backcountry riding after storms anymore. These days I like to take my time and even save some of the big lines for the late spring corn cycle.
What would have happened if you fell with that avalanch? Would your beacon lead someone to you later? Or they wouldn't find you until summer?

As someone who also SOLO back-countries for over a decade (some of us just don`t like the company of all you haters)..... leave the guy alone, stop calling names and spreading hate. Not all of us need someone to hold our hand and put signs and fences up to keep us safe. Have you been to Europe to see how the rest of the world lives..... "ski it`s your own risk" seems pretty self explanatory. He hurt no one, no one was below him ext, ext, ext.
I'm a purist and I respect the skill and effort needed to tour back country terrain and to me if you used a lift ticket or season pass to gain access to terrain you do not deserve to call it back country. Go Pro yourself blazing a fresh ascension trail up Buffalo then descending down Silver Couloir, or aim higher like the Cristo on Quandary. Leave calling resort accessed terrain-back country to the gappers.
This is amazing. I've always wanted to snowboard in such a place. Where is this? And did you hike the whole way up? I'm extremely noobish when it comes to backcountry stuff since I mainly ride park, but would love to do it more than anything in the world. Nice video man.
