"Snow Sense" is a 47 min. documentary about the dangers of avalanches and the perils of back-country skiing. The program features the Whistler Pro Patrol doing avalanche control by hand and local extreme skiers in out-of-bounds areas. Shot in 1998 the film was screened at the Kendal Mtn film fest in the UK. The program is entertaining, featuring some great skiing and boarding and full of good info for people heading into the back-country. To view the entire program look for it at your local library, if it's not there ask your librarian to bring it in. Check out my channel for other outdoor adventure videos. Ex Red Mtn patroller here. Did a week long work exchange with Whistler around 1980. 5 control mornings in 7 days. Really great crew there, some of whom I recognize in this video. Public have no idea how demanding this type of work is. You'd better be in shape.

Not to mention dangerous. Many of these folks have been caught in slides doing the work. Thankfully they all survived as of 1998 when I shot this.

Good stuff. Back when you had to know how to ski. I got 17 years of full-time pro-patrol back in the day.... loved those screamin' nitro headaches, ski resort coffee and lot's of FIRST TRACKS.

Both...Most of the doc was shot in 98. The scene where the patroller (Kenny Malamed went on to become mayor of Whistler) almost gets caught in the slide was shot in 88. You can see they are still using long skiis, over 200 cm.
    cheers,
    Ed

Sounds like you live there or spend a lot of time there now. What is it like? Avi control takes longer? I started skiing Whistler in 69 and spent 2 winters working on the mtn in the 70's. I haven't been back since I shot this doc in 98.

It's much safer to use howitzers. If you wan't to play games with mother nature it's best to stay out of arms reach because she can give one hell of a slap.
