Hey Wooly, thanks for comparison, never saw them all togther. But I have to add something. First, the company isn´t called Fesca, it´s FECSA. That´s actually a company in Madrid, Spain. They are a licenced manufracturer from Carinthia. The difference between the Dutch and British models and the Defence 4 are found in the technical requirements of each Army. For example the British one isn´t as water repellent as the Defence 4 because of different outer material, owed the cost and the requirements. There´s a German Bundeswehr model of the Defence 4, it´s called: Allgemein 2. It´s more similar to the Def 4 as to the other both. Different needs, different product. Few years ago was a bunch of the Indian Military Def 4 model for sale online. I myself have an Def 4 from the French Military, so you can see they are wide spread (probably much more than we will ever know) And in the USA is the company EBERLESTOCK the one who import the Def 4 from Carinthia and labels these with their own tag, calling it EBERLESTOCK Reveille.
Cheers Mate 🙂
Do you think they have the same Internal materials as the defence 4
@@RedBranchBushcraft Far as I know yes, but maybe differences in the amount of insulation, layeringof materials, outershell quality, other characteristics etc. For example: the Dutch and Brits work with an bivy sack for the sleep system. The Bundeswehr don´t, therefore is it more waterrepellent like the Carinthia Def4
@@RedBranchBushcraft hey mate I’m interested in getting the DF4. How is it with sizing? Do you use a medium or large sizing? I’m 180 cm and weigh about 71kg. Should I prefer extra space?
@@alexzlotowski5685 if in doubt get the bigger size I think
@@RedBranchBushcraft for comparison what is your sizing bag you use?
I have both the British Army bag and the Defence 4. Hard to tell the difference between the two in terms of warmth, but I think the Defence 4 wins on quality - not by much though. If you think about it the British Army bag is designed to be abused and replaced cheaply, but it still has to perform. If you are on a budget I would not look past it and if you are not on a budget it is most certainly worth considering.
It's great value
Love my British army bag so much I now have 3. One is on loan to a friend's son for cadets and I rotate the other two when I go camping. They are so warm I have never slept in them, just open the zip all the way put my feet in the foot box and use like a quilt. Perfect in the hammock👍cracking vid as always
Excellent stuff, cheers
Everyone says Fesca, it's actually FECSA for Fabrica Espanola de Confecciones SA. I got the British version new and unissued from Strike Force Surplus in Weston for about £50.. I got both bags, and they have been very good over the last 2 years. I've had the medium bag to -6 in a French army bivvy bag and was warm enough. A pretty good system for my needs..
An excellent system , works very well
The Dutch army issued Carinthia sleeping bag and bivy bag (in Dutch DPM) in the first years after issuing (2005???). After that contract, it was made by Fecsa. I recently bought a Carinthia bivy bag (OD green) from a Fresh surplus store, and found out it had a Dutch NSN number and the text "bivy bag, tactical survival, Airforce NL" Apparently, the Dutch Airforce issued a different type (which is noticeable lighter in weight also. 1 kilo vs. 1.6 kilo.)
Yes, I'd like to get a Dutch carinthia hopped bivvy, that would be very cool
Thanks Wooly - been wondering how these compare for a long time! I have the Defence 4, and it is absolutely fantastic, the only drawback being its size and weight. I have lighter, smaller stuff for distance carrying - nothing feels as good to bed down in as the defence 4 though.
It's like sleeping in your own bed
I got the Defence 4 after watching your review and love it. i paid 250 for mine as i could not find a second hand one. Awesome bag tho.
It's worth that all day long, fantastic quality
@@RedBranchBushcraftfrom what I've read about it, that's still a decent price. I'll be getting one soon! 👌🏻
The defence 4 is a great bag
Great video I recently bought the FECSA medium weight bag I am not sure if it's the Dutch or British version but I bought it new for £65 and I think it's a bargain and fantastic to anyone just starting to get into bushcraft style camping, had to buy a large Snugpak stuff sack as it doesn't come with a stuff/compression sack, I already have a Carinthia Tropen bag I have a complete winter setup now!
Amazing, great value
Got my FECSA in A1 condition from Army stores for £35. I'm my opinion it's easily as good as the Carinthia one and certainly just as warm *Yes I've slept in both
Excellent stuff
Gonna be taking the Defence 4 out to Sweden 🇸🇪 this weekend and its given -18°c
Gonna be trying a system of my own design. From the inside out.
- Cotton liner
- Defence 4 (£80 ebay buy)
- Exped Winter Synmat HL (5.2R Rated)
- Exped folding foam mat
- OEX Bivvy Bag
I know the Carinthia also has lots of magic in there too like special reflective layers round the insulation.
Coldest I've ever taken it too. So lets see.
Excellent stuff
@@RedBranchBushcraft got to between -23 and -18 overnight. Went to bed cold and work up warm even with ice on my bivvi bag
@thewoodlandschoolltd3999 wow, that's amazing
Bought the CD -4 a while back on ebay for just under £70 Great bag. I've had the Arctic Bag and DD Jura 2 which to be honest looks the same as the Arctic Bag. Loved the Arctic Bag but it weighs the same as a small family car 😄
Their a big lump of a thing alright
Great video, want to get the British version. But stuck on what size to get medium or large. I'm 5ft7 👍
I can't remember what size this is , but I'm 5 foot 7 also
@@RedBranchBushcraft thanks for the reply mate👍 I'll have to try both and see what one I prefer 😊
@johnbudd6072 if you can I would
🙏❤️ Love from Scotland ❤️🙏
Any snow yet
No mate ….. bit cold but nothing tough. Was that the bear hoodie you had on ?
@Godl0ves yes that's it, their sending me another jacket, a softshell one , similar but more water resistant. Cold as f here too
@@RedBranchBushcraft lol…
Got my eye on the Carinthia Defence 4-Tropen system, just not the need for it right now (winter, canada). Buy once, cry once. (edit to add) Which one does Bruno prefer? :)
The one I'm in ! Lol
I don't have a D4 but I do have a D6 and the British FECSA Bags. I love the British army one but the Carinthia is a different league. Paid £190 new for the D6.
WOW, that's some deal on the d6
Well, all three are part of a nato.certified system - so there's not much difference, EXCEPT the Fesca shall have a pocket to keep stuff inside the bag (which both dutch and Carinthia does not have). Perosnally, i only have the dutch one, and my only negative experience i have: i could make use of about 4cm more shoulder-with to feel more comfy (it's a tight fit upstairs).
But personally, I still prefer the swiss sleeping bag 90 (not sure if they've replaced it by now) in combination with a "Flauschi" (plush-insert for colder temps); sadly, these "old" sleeping bags are hard to find (should have kept mine when retiring from service - well, live and learn, right)
Nice
Nice hat, where'd you get it?
I got this for raising money for my local hospice
@@RedBranchBushcraft it's got a good headband thickness and size ratio! Most hats pop off the top of my head 😅
@CB19087 lol, check my other channel WoolysMadWorld for a link, every penny goes to the hospice
Defence 4 all the way! Used by a lot of European armies.
Sure is, it's a great bag
if only the Defence 4 had the internal pockets
@@jpkm123g9 that would be handy
On paper is nothing. In practice is everything.
Yes
Stihl frosty.
