The entire history of video games, from their earliest origins all the way up to the end of the seventh generation, in 2013.
Emerging from engineering experimentation, the earliest titles such as Tennis for Two, Space War! and Pong helped to establish the roots of the industry.
Early arcade classics built on this, with titles like Breakout, Space Invaders, Asteroids and Pac-Man breaking into the mainstream and remaining legendary today.
Early PC titles such as Maze War, Zork and Rogue helped define new genres: and while Atari 2600 version of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial might have been disappointing, hobbyist coders continued with aplomb - giving rise to titles like Elite, Exile and Tetris.
The video game crash of 1983 dampened the home market, but arcades remained strong: Donkey Kong, Dig-Dug, Pole-Position, Q*Bert and Mario Bros. all successfully sucking quarters from people's pockets.
The mid-80s saw the rise of the Nintendo home console, starting with Super Mario Brothers and continuing with games like The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, Mega-Man, Metal Gear and Final Fantasy.
Dragon's Lair use of laserdisc technology gave the arcade unit graphics like none other - but a new wave of 16-bit machines would wow home users, with games such as Dungeon Master, Sim City, Shadow of The Beast and The Secret of Monkey Island.
The 1990s saw the 16-bit machines come into their own, with colourful sprites of a scale not seen before: Sonic The Hedgehog, Street Fighter 2, and Lemmings.
Strategy games did well in this era, with the first instalment of Sid Meier's Civilization and the XCOM turn-based alien tactics of UFO: Enemy Unknown.
Dune 2 saw the dawn of the RTS genre, and Wolfenstein 3D did something similar for first person shooters, and marks id's genre-defining path through Doom and Quake.
Myst was a mite more sedate, Tekken was a 3D rival to Street Fighter, Marathon a Macintosh rival to Doom and Star Fox invited barrel rolls aplenty.
The late 90s saw Nintendo go from strength to strength, with exclusives such as Super Mario 64, Chrono Trigger, Pokemon, Goldeneye, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Sony responded in kind with the PlayStation, and a new era of titles such as Wipeout, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto.
Valve shook up the PC scene with 1998's Half Life, and Blizzard did something similar with Starcraft for the RTS genre.
The new milennium was a good time for PC gamers, with a wave of legendary FPS games such as Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 Arena, and
Counter-Strike - and a host of other exclusives in Grim Fandango, Diablo 2, Deus Ex, The Sims, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.
A new wave of consoles brought some new exclusives: Bungie's Xbox launch title, Halo - the much loved Metroid Prime and Kingdom Hearts - and for a brief time, Grand Theft Auto 3.
Infinity Ward embarked on a remarkably successful franchise with Call of Duty, Blizzard single-handedly popularised MMORPGs with World of Warcraft, and Harmonix introduced a sudden need for plastic guitar peripherals with Guitar Hero.
The PS2 had a couple of good games left in it, with the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 4 - and artful Shadow of the Colossus.
2006 saw a new generation of consoles, and a new wave of shooters: Gears of War, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Bioshock, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Fallout 3.
It wasn't all blood and guts, however - with more family friendly titles like Wii Sports, The Orange Box / Portal, and LittleBigPlanet.
Hardcore games broached the mainstream, too - with titles like Bayonetta and Dark Souls proving popular without pandering to all audiences.
The rise of the indie game was perhaps unexpected, but provided welcome relief from the monotony of the mainstream - gems like Journey, Fez and Minecraft perhaps the most notable examples.
We bid farewell to Gen 7 with impressive open world titles such as Red Dead Redemption and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - and the impressively detailed settings of games like Bioshock Infinite and
The Last of Us. - Ігри
I'm watching this for a school project and can everyone just take a moment to appreciate the awesome teacher who set up a history project on video games? Cause this is actually really cool and I'm enjoying learning about all this.

He skipped everything from the ZX Spectrum's bedroom coders to FF7 bringing JRPGs into the western mainstream.
No mention of Ultima's morality system, or the controversial games that created the software ratings board. No mention of Tower of Druaga or Dragon Quest, which were ridiculously influential - the first for filling games with secrets, the second for creating JRPGs.
Only the FPS is covered a bit in-depth, and even that lacks important titles like Medal of Honor. Genres like sports sims and the arcade brawler are ignored entirely.
And there's a lot I haven't mentioned either. It's not something you can cover in twenty minutes or a single post.
His newer documentaries are a much higher quality.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 it's a brief history of video games. Of course he won't put as much time into stupid ass JRPGs

@Tarbosaurus Yes TY. No innovation. EA will constantly release sub-par sports games cuz idiots gobble them up like they were mana from Heaven. The Madden franchise hasn't done anything since 2004.
The audio work in ahoy's videos is criminally underrated.

even though the foundation of videogames was laid before i was born, i still feel so old when i see titles and dates of games that i grew up with. and it's crazy just how far we've come and how rapidly accelerated the gaming industry is developing.
I played old games when I was a kid, so I grew up with them even though I'm in my 20s :D
and THAT is how you show people you're not tied down to one series of games. Kudos to you, Stu, and I look forward to seeing your channel blossom into something great.
I watched this some years ago and now my teacher sent me this as part of an assignment.
Needless to say, this levels of nostalgia should not be theoretically possible.
This is honestly one of my top ten videos on the internet. Excellent job Stu.
This felt like a journey through my entire life. I can't remember anything but the games I played, probably because I didn't do anything else.
A life well lived, amigo
@@basketofsnake104 Yeah man, I regret NOTHING!
Dear Stuart Brown
This must be the twelfth time I watch this video, because A)it's probably my favorite vid on UA-cam and B) I've watched all your other vids.
Your superb voice work, minimal graphics and pace of blackouts and footage all combine to a product that reminds me of the magic that attracted me to games as a medium; a magic that seems to slowly dissolve in today's high budget game market.
Now the praise will make way for a request.
Have you ever considered making more videos like this one but more in-depth? My idea is something like videos dealing with respective genres, say 'history and influence of text and graphical adventures', or 'landmark puzzle platformers' or perhaps 'the best ever racing games' or 'military shooter history', even 'ten crucial rules to make a survival horror game that scares'
I think much can be said when analyzing what made landmark games popular, to highlight those aspects like mechanics, adventure and innovation, sound, music and atmosphere - the things that give those games character - instead of the almost one-dimensional focus on graphics and action. Not that these are not important and exciting, but the media is capable of so much more.
These are what made me excited for things like Myst, Quake, Portal, Need for Speed, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 2/3 and, yes even Street Rods and Police Quest II.
Anyway, hope you get to read this and don't find me overbearing.
From: another great fan of your videos!

Wow, you really touched on almost all of my favorite games over the past 25+ years. I would include Missile Command and Tempest as important early games. Also no mention of sports games at all.
Wahh you didn't mention a game I like out of the hundreds of influential games
this is just a pathetic list of popular games, not influential. a very misleading video, i must say. unsubscribed
No Donkey Kong Country.

This video is beautifully put together.
Thought i would let you know my programming tutor considers your video the most informative and made us watch it in our class today to give us a extremely good example of how video games have changed over the years in preparation for us to learn 3d programming, keep up the good work!
This was a great overview! You can only fit so much history into 19 minutes and for the purpose of this video, it's easy for anyone to use as a base timeline and they can add in more games where applicable.
Excellent video! Some omissions, yes, but other than the fact that FF VII should have had a mention for its impact on taking JRPGs fully mainstream in the West and the fact that Mass Effect deserved a nod for being the most fully realized sci-fi epic universe, none of it bothered me too much. Loved the professionalism of the video and the way it was edited.
50 years of gaming... in 19 minutes.
Thanks Stu, I love your videos.
Just wow. Can't believe the effort and dedication that went into this lovely trip down memory lane. Thank you, kind sir. And well done!
Watching videos like this makes me both feel old and appreciative of all those great games and innovations. Seeing that this Video is from 2013, certainly a lot has happened since then. Hopefully at some point you continue this brief history and we get to see the rise of indie, the commercial birth of VR and much more! Who knows what the next years will bring!
Alright then, in 30 or so years, I expect to see part 2.
I think it's time for a follow-up! The time difference between when this video was made and today is the same amount of time between this video and the release of Half-Life 2, Doom 3, The Sims 2, or GTA: San Andreas! You've got a lot more to gaming history to cover
I really like the way you do your videos, very professional and feels like i'm watching a TV show.
This was nearly 10 yrs ago. And even then your videos make me flash back to when I was a child in the 80s and 90s. F me. How am I still alive?
wow. your videos are some of the best, no sorry, THE BEST videos i have ever seen. Do you make the music yourself? Is there any way i can download the music used in your videos?

It's actually mindblowing how fast gaming has grown to what it is today, in terms of technology. And individuals and indie teams can do so much with the incredibly powerful tools we have nowadays too. Can't wait to see how it will keep evolving.
Despite not including the hugely influential Virtua Racing (1992) This video is one of the best videos on UA-cam and I think it is very well made and your channel is amazing
Very comprehensive brief history I have to say. So many titles that I hold dear were mentioned. Being a horror fan from way back, I am proud to say that I was an RE fan from the first game. Contra was my favorite as a 6 year old :D and so many others. Thank you for that trip down memory lane.
My parents would tell me stories when I was a kid about them staying up till 3 am playing the Sega genesis while in college
man, im old. I remember playing most of the games in the 80's
FANTASTIC COMMENTARY!!!! This was brilliantly done, video games have been a constant throughout my life and I can see through yours also, you captured the first flickering flames of gaming right through to the last expertly. Thanks. :D

i'M TICKED OFF THAT YOU DIDN'T INCLUDE SOME RANDOM GAME THAT NO ONE CARES ABOUT LOL

+Benjamin McLean No Battlefield for destructible environments? I'm sure no one cares about that game at all ;P
+Benjamin McLean Surprised he didn't mention Serious Sam or Blade of Darkness - they're fairly obscure these days but they're bloody fantastic and technical marvels at their time. Hell Blade of Darkness from what I can tell is Dark Souls before Dark Souls and Demon's Souls and I think that was where From's main inspiration came from - like seriously, playing them side by side, there's no doubt about it even if the Souls combat is much simpler but has more RPG aspects. But then again, there's so many things in gaming that it's not surprising he's missed a lot of stuff out.

Saying wii sports is the highest selling video game is a bit of a stretch, seeing as how it shipped with the Wii.
They are not wrong, though...
you could also buy Wii Sports seperate from the console because it may have not always been included...
@@wclifton968gameplaystutorials most sales came from it bundlet together with the console
Mario came with the NES for years.
It's still true. Also other games have been bundled in the past.
you should do a video of glitches some helpful some breaking some fun
Thanks a lot for sharing this vid, really like the selection you made.
1997-2007 is probably the most stacked 10 year period in the history of gaming. So, so many iconic titles for basically every platform and Internet multiplayer was such a mindblowing concept at the time. I still find myself going back to play games from this era frequently, even with a modern gaming rig. They sure don't make 'em like they used to.
Anybody here noticed he uploaded this video ONE DAY before the release of GTA V?
Great list, I found a lot of my favourite games on that list. But I also feel the action-adventure genere was overlooked. Games like Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia, God of War and Assassins Creed were deffenetly influential and at least one of them were worty of mention.
yo, i will use your video for academical purpose, hope you okay with that. thanks for your video, your video is the best source material available around, it's so great.
Check Retroware's "The Video Game Years". It is way better then this one.
Fantastically put together, XboxAhoy, you never disappoint.
I would have removed Metal Gear for NES and mentioned Metal Gear Solid on Playstation. I think it has a more important place in video game history.
Every single MGS is just a remake of MG2.
You could also say it's more solid.
im 13 and i played so many of the older games... my grandpa was a good man
same
In 2013, you couldn't have made a better video. Well done! Hope to see one in 2017!
So many good memories. Thank you, Stu.
Though, I am surprised you didn't mention Mortal Kombat's effect on the rating system. But I'm sure you had a reason.
Nice. But...where are shoot 'em up games? XEVIOUS, Nemesis, R-TYPE and so on.
nobody cares about those games
surprising that there is no mention of crysis series, which obviously has proved to be a pretty standard to show the capabilities of the hardware and even project igi which was so viral in the period contemprory to late 1990's..any word on that?
Sameer Madarkar Crysis was crowded out by a host of more significant titles from 2007. Project IGI is a well-regarded but otherwise fringe FPS.
Loving these vids man, if you only you uploaded more
Stu you're the baddest. Love the vintage font and style of the recent films
Surprised not to see Devil May Cry mentioned. It basically founded a genre.
***** Funny, because they showed off Bayonetta, which was essentially Devil May Cry with a chick and created by the same guy, Hideki Kamiya.
Bayonetta didn't establish the genre though.
***** Or Halo 2.
Yeah he should have showed System Shock as well, probably in stead of Marathon which was a great game but a weird choice
Devil May Cry 1 should totally have been mentioned over Bayonetta.
I wonder what the people 50 years from now will think when they see this video.
"Man we've come far...back then they had to sit down and look at a damn screen!"
"Man, I miss the days when we had the resources to enjoy entire worlds made for our entertainment. And you could actually own a game."
ill never forget 1994 we were in canada, i came home from school and my dad was playing sonic the hedgehog. A couple years passed and he brought us home an n64 and my childhood was golden. Love video games. Counter-strike, Half-life, starcraft, age of empires 2. all games ive been playing from 1998 until present
Great list!
I would have squeezed "Scramble" for the Vectrex (1982) for it's incredibly smooth visuals & actually being a game you could beat since most games up to this time were point based, you can't beat them you just tried to beat your old score (and the Vextrex being a console that literally brought the arcade to your home.
and Metal Gear Solid - The graphics left me star struck, it felt like I was playing a movie, such a deep story and it you really had to think out side of the box to beat the game (controller port 2 anyone?).
To be honest those to mention have my Bias because I played them when they were new and had a big impact on like (like the original StarCraft for the PC and Daytona USA arcade)
Thanks again for the great video and a walk down memory lane.
"The Elder Scrolls returns with Skyrim"
Even though that you never mentioned The Elder Scrolls up until then.

Tf did ea made tho. Their library popular games was made by bought smaller developers. All i can remember theymade is madden.
now we have No Man's Sky
+zombie killer45 which is my favorite game.
A shallow and over-hyped game with missing features and a incorrect perspective of what people want out of a space sim, developed by those who say such ridiculous statements as "every atom is procedural" and parade their work as innovative when the technology that allows No Man's Sky's scale has been around since 1984. It's sad how Elite, a game made in 1984, features more depth in its economy than No Man's Sky, which was advertised with trading being one of the larger features on top of exploration.
I understand its disappointments, but for the right person, its the best.
KMC
Even for the right person, you shouldn't buy it because any person who is respectable wouldn't support a liar.
That's why I don't buy Ubisoft games and hem and haw about buying EA titles.
+Evil Roy Slade And power to you, despite the flaws and what everyone keeps saying, you saw a game you liked, and you proceeded to like it.
This video was amazing!!! I have absolutely no problems with your selections . Except I would have expected Heavy Rain, or God of war, or LA Noire but other that, great job!
This is very well-made. Thanks for doing so much research.
Except use of non existing term "western RPG" ;D
4:52 METAL GEAR SOLID IS THE BEST VIDEO GAME SAGA EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I knew you were expecting this Stu but I just wanted to say how can you miss the 1999 Silent Hill, not only is it arguably the best survival horror series but it also spawned legions of indie games, stories and comics
the second was alot better
Jayden Mclean I wouldn't say a lot but it was better
Killer97 in my opinion resident evil is better but it is good too
Talking with one of your reviewers It's so awesome to see someone who remembers the original DOOM codes! That was the year I started my career path in computer science. They included a Doom editor on the floppy disk (PC version) that got me started designing new levels. Immersed in that I progressed to Quake 3, and Unreal Tournament death matches. The Unreal engine is still fun to use (Garry's Mod on Steam) and it's a subject you have not done a video about yet and is past due: The MODDING community. People who participate in the games development through enhancements or new levels. PC Cheat codes to level design editors. But since you are an xbox boy you may not have experience with these edit tools.
I'd love to see an updated video of this subject in a few years.
I find disappointing that Splinter Cell is mentioned on behalf of Metal Gear Solid :(
Ahoy has something against MGS, I guess.
André Perez Segato He mentioned Metal Gear, the godfather of stealth games.
Metal Gear Solid (while one of the greatest games of all time) was basically Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake in 3d.
Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake is my favorite video game of all time so I am a bit bias.
Still, MGS for the Ps1 was not really ground breaking. Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake had all the features first such as the ability to crouch, the first game to have compelling story and how a saga was possible because the story expanded to a large level (Metal Gear 1 was inspired by action films which explains why it's story is cliche), and unlike MGS1, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake had a much better enemy ai. That is no question.
When I was young I thought GTA vice city was the first one
High quality, amazing stuff... Now i feel so old..
