I've realised after 3 minutes and I've lost interest. This guy, Larry Bundy Jr and Kim Justice are the three best channels on YT I think. I'd love to see a proper piracy video from one of those 3 about how it affected different consoles or generations. The Amiga was supposedly plagued but imo was massive because of piracy, windows became the number 1 OS because of piracy, the Dreamcast, in my opinion, died because of it but I'd love a properly researched video on the matter.
I totally misunderstood the intro, I thought he said he was going to talk about the "trampling of the rights and property of others *NOT* the one with the boats". I was completely confused for about half that video.
I was mostly confused by the intro because both kinds of piracy 'trample the rights and property of others', wich is probably why they are namesakes to begin with.
@my man weirder still that it isn't people getting up in a huff about indie games getting pirated, nooo, it's overpriced AAA tosh people defend. Can't help but feel that it's more often out of buyer's remorse than being that dumb. Also I still love the story of darkwood devs putting it up on pirate sites themselves once it got onto key reseller sites, urging players to pirate it instead of using grey market to avoid potential issues caused by said grey market for the dev (since these are often used to launder money). Immediately went and bought the game on steam cuz I gotta respect that.
The closest I have come to sid meiers pirates in modern formats (and I use the word "closest" quite loosely) was Black Flag. I don't think this was a coincidence either. You can see the inspiration from the treasure maps to the pirate rescues and many things between stitched into the fabric of the game. Not a perfect modern day by any means rendition but by far gave me a similar positive feedback experience. In short Black Flag was so far the best effort but lost in it's bonds to another game altogether.
I'd approach software piracy from a different angle - A focus on copy protection/DRM. It's a possibility, but I'd need to acquire a lot of physical stuff - dongles, code wheels, game manuals etc.
I loved Pirates of the Caribbean Online when I was younger. I'm glad fans are recreating the game under the name, The Legends of Pirates Online. Disney is fantastic for not taking down these recreations of their closed MMOs.
Your videos are the most compact entertainment in a long time here on youtube! In times where everybody puts zero effort in doing boring long ass "let's play"s it's nice to have someone who actually does research, captures gameplay and edits all together to a short infotainmental video! Thanks a lot!
Awesome vid Stu, as always. AC4BF is first AC game that i played since AC2. Worth every cent, and sometimes i even launched that game just to aimlessly travell across the Caribean and hear the sailors songs for hours.
Aww, I was hoping it was about software piracy, not piracy software. :( I wanted you to school these youngsters on stuff like 'codewheels' or "Oh, you want to load your save? Well what's the 27th word in the 3rd paragraph on page 19 of the manual?"
Iv played 'High Seas Trader' back in the 90's... I had no idea what the game was call and thought it was going to be lost in my memory for good. Thank you for including it and refreshing my memory!
I for one really wanted to see Crimson Skies mentioned in some way or another, but since the focus was primarely on the pirates of the sea, I guess it makes sence that it didn't make the cut :)
And if you want to go even further back, Synergistic Software's "Odyssey: The Compleat Apventure" [sic] was shockingly vast for the games of the era. Part 1 was an open world island you could freely explore, until you saved enough "quadroons" (gold) to buy a ship. Part 2 took place on the high seas, where you actually had to sail your ship to multiple islands by using the winds to move you, fighting pirate ships (or becoming a pirate by attacking merchant ships). Part 3 took place on the final island where you try to take over the evil Caliph's castle.
not a clickbait but a title many can misunderstand. this title also explains that he is talking about pirates , but it just raises the question ''gaming piracy? or full fledged eye patch cannon dudes that steal your shit?''
very good video stu! i love the high quality and you helped me find sid meiers pirates, which i played as a kid and i couldnt remember its name until now. instantly bought it again. Thank you!
An excellent list! Great as always, Stu. However, I was fully expecting to see Space Pirates and Zombies in the list. It was a fantastic game, and a promising sequel is on its way.
Gotta say, was expecting an overview of gaming piracy and the debate surrounding it but I instead got a very good summation of a very overlooked portion of video game history. Great video!
Stu, it would be cool if you were to somehow tie these games in, instead of just spitting a list of the most notable ones. If you want to talk about the Monkey Island - cover it all in one go and mention the games influenced by it, which probably is going to include a game that might tie in to a different one, allowing for a transition. Some historical background would be nice too - for instance, in many games you damage other ships with a barrage, which is completely unrealistic, as you don't want to damage the cargo you're stealing, nor sink the ship and lose it all. It's kind of your trademark, outside of editing.
There was a specific era of piracy in this video? Where? And modern piracy is the best. being a Somalian crime lord versus the whole NATO fleet would be a difficult but amazing challenge for a video game.
The Bane Of Existence Well, the majority of the video was the classic wooden ship, cutlass carrying pilliger seeking grog, gold, and maybe a curse. Not a somallian crime lord with an Ak-47 looking for a ransom, diatributing cocaine, and forcing people into the slavery, if not sex trade. Not to mention the lack of said games. Again, kinda off on classic piracy.
Fair point, but I think that the new age piracy could have been included as well. I got more of an impression that the video was about the evolution of piracy in gaming rather than just one particular era of piracy in gaming history.
The Bane Of Existence Fair enough. I personally didn't get that from the video, but I was mostly waiting for the few hits of nostalgia more than anything so maybe Stu could have made it work.
Ahh, Pirates of the Burning Sea. Such an underrated game! Despite it's flawed land combat system, the Naval combat was very realistic and well-thought out. It had a very nice customization system, went F2P after a while, and it's quests were very deep and some of the more hidden storylines were - to say the least, incredibly interesting. I remember one of the more rare storylines consisted of a hidden, conspiracy-theory war between the Spanish Inquisition and Knight's Templars. I wish they remake that game someday in hopes of it getting more newfound attention.
Hmm i miss one pirate themed game here. I played that thing back in about 2002-2005. You could buy bigger ships and equip them aswell as yourself, the story evolvedaround some majan artefact (no, not assasins creed :P) and i can clearly remember the endbosses ship, a fkin huge galleon twice as large as my ship was, the bigges one in the game.... and then i could capture it oh my gawd.... :D Also story was interesting... but eventough no matter how hard i try to find the name out again, no chance :(
I think the game you were looking for is Pirates of The Caribbean game developed by akella. The game is mentioned briefly at 10:33 in this video. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean_(video_game) is the link to the wikipedia page of the game.
Ah yes exactly, that one was it! I guess i liked it becaus it was themed in there but afaik you didnt play alongside the movies story but had your own. Back in 2003 the graphics where also nice :) Enjoyed that little bugger. Guess also one of the advantage was, that i didnt knew much about it and therefore went unbias'd into the game.
Axonteer Loved it. Best ship i had there was the Mefisto, the black frigate (quest chain). That thing was ridiculously fast when handled properly. The 3rd installment was, Age of Pirates or something, was egregious mess and does not even deserve the title of a game. City of abandoned ships, the 4th installment, is ok go to, but i had problems with it since release (crashing, and generally buggy). I'm looking forward to the day when a more competent studio makes a game in that vein. I think i still have the Seadogs 2 (Pirates of Caribbean game you are speaking of), although heavily modded. (PiratesAhoy is still up i think, the modding forum for the game, and they may still have mods for all 4 games up)
Mikhail Solovyev i dont have the game anymore but now that i know the game name again i can keep a look out on GOG. I rellay liked the naval battles in Empire and even more so in Napoleon total War. AC4 Black Flag was a bit too arcady for me, though still fun.
I know Stu doesn't care if he skipped over any game that we can think of, but the fact that Pirate101 isn't mentioned isn't just me bitching, it's odd that he wouldn't mention it. It's like skipping over Titanfall in a video about first person shooters,
I´ve got a great case of serendipity from this video, and I have finally found this silly Disney game I barely remembered from my late childhood/early teenage years. I new it was some sort of Goofy character and an island/beach location, but never managed to find the actual game. I'm so thankful right now!
11:44 The company also used the same map, music, and game engine to make the much more action packed "Pirate Hunter" around the same time. The difference was the focus on ship to ship combat, a far less complex trading system, no town building elements, and much easier to understand controls.
Among all the things I like in Ahoy's videos... I love his use of low frequency sound/music. Makes my, really old and "not fancy at all but still GOOD", speakers shiny :-)
The most fun I ever had in a pirate themed game was actually a mod called Battlefield Pirates which was of course for Battlefield 1942. Ducksfoot pistols, sabre combat, cannons you push around the battlefield, drivable ships of the line and single man paddle boats with mini cannons on the front. All good stuff.
I can not figure out how I haven’t found this channel before now. I had to be told about it… don’t get me wrong I’m grateful I get to watch it all for the first time now but how haven’t I found this before now
I LOVED Sid Meier's Pirates, and one of the happiest days of my life (I am soooo pathetic) was when it was re-released with (then) next-generation graphics. Replayability was incredible. I STILL bust this out every now and again.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone mention a Zelda game so casually without praising it like it’s the best thing ever made. It goes to show how unbiased this channel is. It’s pure facts.
Thank you for mentioning Zak and Wiki! That game seriously doesn't get enough credit. It's a shame it was released on the Wii, which didn't have the best reputation for 3rd party games.
Great video, Stu! Although I was really hoping to see a mention of one of the favorite games of my childhood, Rayman 2 - The Great Escape, which features robot pirates as the main villain.
It is 2023 and Sea Of Thieves has a Monkey Island questline that has all the original voice actors, characters, music, puzzles on melee island. It is truly a treat.
The mere mention of the two words “Monkey Island“ and i can hear catchy music. Those games are timeless. Now excuse me, I think I just saw a three headed monkey…
I was one of many to realise this video isn't about pirating games. But the video caught my attention when Claw was mentioned. It's such an unknown, yet very underrated game. I wouldn't say no if I could help somebody remake it to modern PCs. It was the game of my childhood!
This was a fascinating watch, nice to see where games came from, what was gained and what we lost. That 2D Monkey Island game was beautiful, the 3D one ...less so. For all those complaining about this not being about piracy, why not look around, Lazy Game Reviews has a large video about DRM and how insane it used to be and is: LGR - History of DRM & Copy Protection in Computer Games
It took me 8 minutes to realize this wasn't about the other piracy. Wow, I'm tired.
It took me 3.
I'm not tired. I'm just dumb.
It took me about 4 minutes to realize lol
It took me 22 seconds. When he said "you know, the one with the boats." :D
I realized when he started talking about pirates.
I thought he meant the other kind of piracy
me too
so did literally everyone else
yep
Conspiracy?
GuvernorDave and LitAlpaca, not necessarily (especially while using and agreeing with the word "literally"), since you're not mind readers.
I totally misunderstood the intro, I thought he said he was going to talk about the "trampling of the rights and property of others *NOT* the one with the boats". I was completely confused for about half that video.
same.
I was mostly confused by the intro because both kinds of piracy 'trample the rights and property of others', wich is probably why they are namesakes to begin with.
That's the point it's supposed to be "clever" clickbait
Cage Fury he says "the one with the boats" in the last line of the intro!
Not what I thought the video was going to be about.
Haha me too but im not complaining
*****
Ditto. I hope they do the OTHER piracy one.
me to
He trolled you so hard.
Yeah...
I came into this video thinking it would be about illegal downloading, and stayed for a video about pirate games
Sid Meier's Pirates still remains unparalelled for me, as it is exactly what i want in a Pirates game.
I completely agree.
I have the PSP edition, which is basically the remastered version
The closest I have come to sid meiers pirates in modern formats (and I use the word "closest" quite loosely) was Black Flag. I don't think this was a coincidence either. You can see the inspiration from the treasure maps to the pirate rescues and many things between stitched into the fabric of the game. Not a perfect modern day by any means rendition but by far gave me a similar positive feedback experience.
In short Black Flag was so far the best effort but lost in it's bonds to another game altogether.
It is really, really lackluster compared to the Uncharted Waters series. Luckily, Uncharted Waters 2 is available on steam now.
And also quite an impossible game to pirate since you wouldn't have the map.
I thought both kinds of piracy were illegal
+--Derp-- Not in civilised countries.
+Bob Bobson *Only, in civilized countries
+TheEnmineer *Not in civilised countries.
+Ivo Robuttnik Only in civilized countries.
+TheEnmineer Civilized countries?...In those you have the worst pirates...You call them cops and courts....
10 minuets into it still waiting for him to talk about piracy
He did, it's the other kind of piracy. I was confused too when I first watched this.
glad I'm not the only one
I know!
Pio Day yeah
6minutes 12 seconds it took me to find the proper theme ... Cannabis played a part
i think a video about illigal piracy would have been a bit more interesting than this
I agree, the one with 1's and 0's not cannons and ships. Both are technically illegal...
yeah, i thought it would be about the Illigal/ Pirate Bay kinda Piracy :/ shame really
I'd approach software piracy from a different angle - A focus on copy protection/DRM. It's a possibility, but I'd need to acquire a lot of physical stuff - dongles, code wheels, game manuals etc.
Sounds cool! make sure you involve the Spyro anti-piracy
Me too.
He had the chance to say “ Ahoy ya matey “
"an evil wizard makes off with your booty"
HOLY SHIT
I had to pick up my phone and replay that segment to make sure I wasn't hearing things. had a hearty chuckle
TornadoAzulK4 My favorite.
kiefac has dank maymays What time in video?
Skyonite why tf are you asking me?
kiefac has dank maymays At what point in the video did he say it
"Turn off your computer and go to sleep!"
Hahaaaa, you got me there.
"Quest for Booty" has got to be the most ambivalent name ever.
+AlexKulibin Most of them are like that. "Going Commando", "Up your Arsenal"
"dat ass doe"
i don't think that word means what you think it means. ambi-valent: leaning simultaneously in opposite directions.
Enjoyed the video!
your mom !!
And really, what more do you need to say?
@@guacamolebasedterror that he enjoys the entire channel
Congrats!
I loved Pirates of the Caribbean Online when I was younger. I'm glad fans are recreating the game under the name, The Legends of Pirates Online. Disney is fantastic for not taking down these recreations of their closed MMOs.
you look like a fish
+Pouty You look like an internet user, am I right?
The Confident Gamer
they're not welcome in society
Yeah me too. I've played the beta and the devs are doing a good job. The beta is coming soon, i'm so hyped!
It's because they have enough money to not care...
Stuart is literally the only man to not sound cringy with a stereotypical pirate voice.
Your videos are the most compact entertainment in a long time here on youtube! It's a shame there was no mention of Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. Dead Men Tell No Tales was a great episode.
Exactly what I was hoping for!!
Bro you already know I was thinking about that the entire time
That part of that game was basically my entire childhood.
This was pretty interesting. Love the documentary-style videos, Stu!
I thought this would be about bootlegs. Damn.
+Corrupt Soul lel boot-legs
It was about booty
Would've been so good.
ohh, I was thinking pirates of games, not games of pirates.
but whatever, still a good video.
So did I, and although the video was good as usual, the latter subject would have interested me a lot more.
This was a video on the latter subject
KMN
Gladly.
Yo dawg
Well, it's officially confirmed. PC has the most pirates.
It's a shame this was released before the finest pirate adventure of all: Raven's Cry!
Why are you all giving me that look?
Aww, I was hoping it was about software piracy, not piracy software. :( I wanted you to school these youngsters on stuff like 'codewheels' or "Oh, you want to load your save? Well what's the 27th word in the 3rd paragraph on page 19 of the manual?"
LGR has a video on that
Remember those dark red sheets of paper with codes written in black? geeze I think THAT is what killed my eyesight
God I’m glad I didn’t have to deal with that shit xD although denuvo can go fuck itself
@@n646n Wrong century.
Iv played 'High Seas Trader' back in the 90's... I had no idea what the game was call and thought it was going to be lost in my memory for good.
Thank you for including it and refreshing my memory!
Shame Rogue Galaxy wasn't featured into this. Then again, it's really underrated but it was a great game.
I draw the line at space pirates!
aww...
XboxAhoy you did use Ratchet and Clank though
I remember Rogue Galaxy being quite good, but the dog character was just plain useless
Fred Borris I'm playing through it currently and most characters are really. Once you have your 3 staple characters, you don't really need much
This channel never ask us to subscribe, i highly respect that.

Rename this video to "A Brief History of Pirate Games"...
Why? He did it as clickbait... and it worked
not a clickbait but a title many can misunderstand.
this title also explains that he is talking about pirates , but it just raises the question ''gaming piracy? or full fledged eye patch cannon dudes that steal your shit?''
ArcadeGames Title bait
very good video stu! i love the high quality and you helped me find sid meiers pirates, which i played as a kid and i couldnt remember its name until now. instantly bought it again. Thank you!
Yar-Har, fiddlety-dee, being a Pirate is alright to be! Do what you want ‘cause a Pirate is free, you are a pirate.
Arent you supposed to be Monotering SCPS' right now Dr Bright?
An excellent list! Great as always, Stu. However, I was fully expecting to see Space Pirates and Zombies in the list. It was a fantastic game, and a promising sequel is on its way.
"Titular character" i see what you did there
He just couldn't resist.
I only came here to say the same.
Pirates of the Caribbean Online was the game of my childhood. I'm so glad fans are remaking it!

never has this channels' title been more appropriate
Hey Stu, how about a Brief History of Graphics?
This is actually going to be the next episode. Not for a while, though - I'm going to do Iconic Arms first.
Fair enough!

It turned out great! Didn't even realize it was 40 minutes until I was done.
Turn off your computer and go to sleep!

So happy you mentioned Ratchet & Clank:Quest for Booty! I grew up with R&C altough I only played the PS2 games.

Great video, Stu! Although I was really hoping to see a mention of one of the favorite games of my childhood, Rayman 2 - The Great Escape, which features robot pirates as the main villain.
No StarFox Adventures Stu!! That was classic! Great video as always :)
It is 2023 and Sea Of Thieves has a Monkey Island questline that has all the original voice actors, characters, music, puzzles on melee island. It is truly a treat.
Fantastically well put together Stu
Enjoyable effort Stu :) Can see alot of work been sunk into this.
Definitely some of the most satisfying videos to watch
Great video, I thought like most this would be on software piracy but I was still thoroughly entertained. Thank you for this great video.
Ahoy is a bad man, titular... haha perfect timing
7 years later and the video is still as good as ever
You forgot the Villian Risky Boots and her crew from Shantae.
I've finished most of Ahoy's other content, I guess I'll watch his video on digital piracy.
...
wait. oh. oh hell yes
Holy shit Captain Claw! I haven't seen or thought about that in like 14 years but as soon as I saw it memories came flooding in.
Your voice is legendary I can't get over of it.
I love the way the pirate accent fades in and out in the intro
As a person from Bristol, I appriciate this video
The mere mention of the two words “Monkey Island“ and i can hear catchy music. Those games are timeless.
Now excuse me, I think I just saw a three headed monkey…
Another great episode. Keep up the good work.
I was one of many to realise this video isn't about pirating games.
But the video caught my attention when Claw was mentioned. It's such an unknown, yet very underrated game. I wouldn't say no if I could help somebody remake it to modern PCs. It was the game of my childhood!
omg. captain claw. brings back memories.
thank you, stu!
fantastically stitched together and narrated as always. keep up the good work
Seemed like you had a lot of fun with this one Stu.
This was a fascinating watch, nice to see where games came from, what was gained and what we lost. That 2D Monkey Island game was beautiful, the 3D one ...less so.
For all those complaining about this not being about piracy, why not look around, Lazy Game Reviews has a large video about DRM and how insane it used to be and is:
