CAA Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Scheme. UK Drone registration scheme is now live and is mandatory from 30 Nov 2019. So here's a tutorial for the whole registration process. How do you register your drone? What is the difference between an Operator ID and a Flyer ID? Do you need both? What's involved in the CAA test and how to pass. All this and more unfolds in this video on possibly the most ill-thought bit of CAA legislation to date (IMHO)...

Hi Ian, thanks for the video mate, as you say it's been done in good intentions but definitely been done the wrong way and will only effect law abiding citizen's not the people who do wrong with their drones anyway, those people will just not register anyway.. I'll be taking the test etc in a day or two.

Thanks Ian. Personally I was not much bothered about it after seeing your video (and got 20/20 in the test ... first time ever). A lot easier than most interaction with the Government. I also feel that having a piece of paper to wave around might make me less reluctant to use a drone when there are people about - which may be worth £9, who knows.

Thoughts? Ignore the law. They can't enforce something if everyone ignores it. Just like the dog licence. It's an absolute joke and violation of civil liberties.

@Bazanji I understand your feelings completely. Initially I was thinking similar but, as @Peter Miller said above, having an official bit of paper to show to people may just be worth the nine quid. If you only ever fly out in the middle of nowhere, or you own land or know a friendly farmer then I should think you would get away with it. I have DJI Spark for photography and a couple of parkflyer foamies. I mostley fly the foamies on the school field out the back of our house. I have the verbal ok of the headmistress to do this outside of school hours and in the holidays and none of my neighbours have ever objected. I fly safely and don't make a nusience of myself and when I'm flying the Spark (I don't fly that on the school field) I'm very careful to follow the Drone code. We live about 14km from a major airport and just to the side of the usual approach to the most active runway. I know I'm plenty far away from the airport boundry and that staying under 400' AGL will mean around 1000' of vertical seperation between any manned aircraft in the area - but there is a reasonable chance of meeting jo public who doesn't know that. If someone is at all worried and wants to come and ask me what I'm doing, then having an official looking bit of paper that says I'm a good boy will go a long way to satisfying their fears, and if it doesn't and there is a chance of them involving the authorities then I'll loose a lot more than 9 quid a year for not having the paperwork. With luck they will see the flaws and the scheme will go the same way as the dog license, but for the sort of flying I like to do I think its not worth the risk to not comply.

Hi Ian thank you for another informative video, I own a DJI mavic platinum and have had great fun flying it in my local park and here in Devon on our moors , I have always flown safely and with respect for others around me , 99.9 % of spectators have always expressed an interest asking the usual " how much, how high, how far " etc. Never had any problems at all except for ... ( here comes my rant, and I know it's controversial ) one time flying in my local park ( far away from anyone) , some old guy approached me claiming that I was "breaking the law" and that I had "frightened his dog" he soon buggered of after I told him that I was a member of the BMFA and that I had insurance and asked him if he had a licence and insurance for his dog that was running around children ( off lead) here's my point , if the Government are so concerned about collecting revenues ( and we all know they are) then why not make all dog owners register and insure their dogs, and cyclists register and insure their cycles after all , if a dog bites a child for example ? the owner could quite easily get away without retribution by running off , and possibly the dog would follow them back home ? ( hypothetical and difficult to police) and the cyclist that can scratch your vehicle or knock of your £150 wing mirror and bugger off whilst you are sitting stuck in traffic ? No retribution for them , just a trip to A&E in the first case and a reduced bank balance in the second ?
Just trying to make a point .
    Carry on the good work

Nice informative video as usual Ian. Well done and I love how you screened through 50% of the exam! After all the red tape, hoop and holler about drones, they made it so ridiculously basic. Obviously the CAA didn’t want it be challenging because that means someone would really need to put in some serious learning effort to pass it. Just a formality so it seems but at least it’s something. I’m surprised they don’t expect the operator to retain a flight and maintenance log book as well or do they?

Thanks for that Ian. I sorted my IDs out without any problem and the new website works well. It is typical of distance learning sites and the objective, I guess, is to make you think when you fly and be responsible however, If you consider that you must have sight of your drone at all times then the promised range of up to 8km for the Mavic Pro 2 will never be used!

Just did the test (passed lol) and now I have a flyer number (not doing the Operator ID as I live in Portugal and that would only confuse "them" over here! lol). As for the 3 year thing, could it be they just want to wait and see what the "new" laws are then? As for the £9.00 per YEAR!!!! I think that's a bit steep, I think giving out an Operator ID on proof of insurance would be a better option.

Its sad that i only stumbled across your video though as i had no idea this law was coming in. Ive done the test and fixed on the ID to the drone. I will be more comfortable when flying and challenged by anyone because i can tell them im registered and have completed the necessary govt training. HOWEVER, if said pilot decides to fly "for fun" outside of the PFCO then a Flyer ID is required which means you have to do the test. (But not pay the £9)

If it's over 250grams then make sure you display a registration number on it and have your flyer ID on you. That is all you'll need to defend yourself if approached by a member of the public as that's the only thing they ask about if they approach you. As for gauging distance, well think in terms of the length of your back garden.... That works for me. 👍🏻

As a Brit who moved to Canada and who visits the UK, the test is so much easier than the Canadian basic licence test- no study required. In Canada none of the questions are allowed to be revealed online and the questions encompass meterology, radio communications, even aircraft engineering! Once again Ian your video has been very helpful. Thank you very much. I smiled when it became quite apparent that you were mildly sceptical about certain parts of the Registration procedure. But I have a sliight problem with what seems to be a general consensus of opinion and would like to start a genuine, hopefully friendly, debate, namely the annual charge of £9/annum. We all know that drones have, in the wrong hands and with a wicked mind, a dangerous potential. But so do some dogs and their licence is £12.50/annum. On the other hand Shotgun and Firearm certificate renewals are £49 and £62 every 5 years after initial registration fees of £79.50 and £88 respectively which makes the £9/annum for drones look a bit expensive. But to really stir things up a bit, cyclists and horse riders don't need any kind of registration process or pay any kind of licence fee. It all seems a bit disjointed to me but in reality I don't have a problem with £9 but my intended drone purchase is for use in my farming business.
And finally, is it possible/sensible/permissible to go through the drone registration process before I actually purchase a 250grm+ drone which is imminent ? Thanks in advance for any polite and/or helpful comments.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  4 роки тому

Hello Scooby. Thanks for the good words. Considering most models cost many hundreds of pounds, the £9 is absolutely about the principle of paying to own something for no valid reason. Dog licenses are no longer in existence in the UK as they were pointless. And even the dangerous dogs act didn't fix dangerous dogs. What are we getting for the £9? You can register with fake details. Criminals won't bother registering at all. Which ever way you look at it, it does not achieve what it claims it's trying to.... As the registration and training is a 15 minute job, I would wait until you get your drone.... Cheers, Ian

Good question; the CAA drone code rules do cover this from your father's perspective as the registered operator: - If anyone else will fly a drone or model aircraft you’re responsible for, you must tell them: > to fly safely and follow this Code when they fly > to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for flying > what you’ll be responsible for, such as keeping any built-in software up to date > what you expect them to do, especially to do with flying and maintaining your aircraft
So the answer is No, he doesn't need to be with you but he will remain liable for any trouble that might happen..... :)

If you’re planning on using your drone strictly as a hobby, a drone licence is not required as long as you follow the CAA regulations.
If you’re planning on using your drone for profit or for business purposes, you will need to get a drone licence (or PfCO) from a CAA approved provider.
