Duran Duran has always been one of the best bands, never received the credit they deserved. I am proud to say I have been a fan 30 years and always will be.

The reel-to-reel! Roto-toms! Simon’s baby voice! This is fantastic. Thank you to whoever dug this up. Love that 40 yrs later, this is their opener. Who would’ve known? ❤
Far ahead of their time. An oddly Dark sound too. If you didn't like DD in the 80's= you just weren't cool. I think Dd and probably Adam ant were the 2 coolest acts you could be into. Glad I got to experience it when it was a thing.
Syntheziser with bass/electric guitar in 1981...wow these guys were ahead of their time. No wonder they hit it big when they first came out. Sound was a blend but something new, fresh, original. And Simon Lebon on the vocals, priceless
It's a shame synthesizers were so subjective back then, I think anyone here can really appreciate Nick's subtle nuance of sound blending with the bass.
The sound is really cutting edge and original. Rock, synth and bass blended together. Great music with a great producer...... Songs that were original and lots of attitude. They should play the first two albums live as a single show ......
Not really... japan was more art rock than DD was... DD had more of an edge to them and more poppy..... the only thing that was really taken was that Nick had the same haircut as David there for a while.
they already play enough of the songs from RIO as it is.... Id like to see them not play save a prayer, hungry like the wolf and rio on a set.. play the deeper cuts like new religion or lonely in your nightmare
3:24 - Simon's dancing. 💙 The whole song/performance has an avant garde/experimental feel. This, Khanada, and To The Shore are some of their moody gems. Hard to believe the five of them had only been together for a year when this was filmed - they're already so fantastic!
After watching a lot of old Japan (including their OGWT appearances), I can really see their influence on early DD, but also Japan's originality and innovation. Nick and John talked about Japan's influence on them in the early years so it's not anything against DD. I've been a fan for 40+ years. I love that they took a great influence and have continued to grow with every passing decade.
Same. Shame third lp had production drowning. However, the tracks are often immense, especially the original Reflex'83, New Moon, Tiger, Union and Seventh. Bugger it, Cracks is good too. And Shadows. Third album certainly had something.
@@Noodles37UKI never understood the displeasement with ragged tiger songs. It has some bangers on it. Reflex is the iconic main single out of it but Cracks in the pavement and Crime and passion for me are underrated. I swept by these songs as younger on my playlist but only realised later what a fool I was. John Taylor said that he doesnt particularly care for that album but then I also read somewhere that his input on it was very limited and certainly not that of their first and Rio. Im guessing he disagreed on some things that were left in that felt are ruining the quality of the album? I mean you can tell because their first two albums are polished with all the boys operating at 100% and you can tell, whereas on ragged tiger you can notice the "cracks in the pavement" between the boys on some of the songs. They were shifting in weird direction. Simon and Nick wanted to be melodic whereas Andy and John wanted to rock. That album is probably the reason why they decided on stoping for a year or two and do touring full on because after their 83/84 US tour which was arguably their biggest and when they were without a shadow at the height of popularity and number 1 band in the world for a short time you can certeinly notice the band spliting up a bit. The Bond theme deal is what held them together until 85' otherwise they would have split after the tour in 84' already.
I love watching this....its so reminiscent of 80s miusic taking hold of our hearts 💕. Gotta love the raw beauty of an amazing band rocking it out with true talent. This is when bands played a real song without lipsyncing and can play instruments from love of music and hard work. Fucking love DuranDuran❤🎶
Today I play bass thanks also this great band.in the 80s they were my idols but understand now ,at 50,they have been full of talent and that have got x factor all 5. Love them. Thk you guys.
Buen sonido bella voz de Simon Le Bon Duran Duran los mejores y más fabulosos de todos los tiempos gracias por compartir con nosotros los fans de Duran Duran este video simón es lindo mi favorito
Nick's eerie intro, JTs throbbing bass and LB's unusual lyrics r just stupendous. i cud so easily have done with another 2 albums of this kinda sound from their catalogue. AYNIN comes close but it's not enough!
Duran Duran album is by far the best. I am disappointed now when I see them live (several times in 2010-2011) that they do not do more than Girls on Film, Planet Earth. and Careless Memories from that album. Night Boat, Sound of Thunder, Friends of Mine, and Anyone out There should be part of every gig.
Okay so this is pretty much the greatest thing ever! Never thought I would see an original live clip of this song from back when they recorded it....WOW!
While I realise that they're still making new material and need to promote it, I'd love to see them do a tour where they play more if their older, more obscure tracks like this. They must know fans would love that.
haro82 Oh if only..I pray for that day before any of 'em should kick the bucket! But what are the chances?! ;) More chance of Andy/Warren returning than DD actually running a non-populist set list....

They have in small venues in England mostly B sides and unplayed album tracks. They did it after the All you need is now tour. Should be some videos on youtube.
Yes indeed, it was a feel to the sound that really brought a mythical blissful sound, Big Thing album recaptured some of that mat magic, have a listen and remind yourself, although, you could not really compare to the first 2 albums.
Play it on an Aria Pro II bass (I have a 1981 SB-700) and it will almost make you cry; I'm not joking. In fact, playing any of DDs early stuff on that bass is truly an amazing experience. Now if only I had John Taylor's chops and almost 40 years musical experience...
They should take a lesson out of Peter Hook's concerts who is revisiting all tracks done by Joy Division and New Order. I would love to see DD play a show of just Duran Duran and Rio stuff.
They also did that in Los Angeles in the 2000s during the Pop Trash phase they played their first 3 albums completely on 3 different nights...one each evening at house of blues.
que grandes los DD!!!!, que futurista Nick con sus teclados y cintas análoga para la pista, gran álbum el primero, coincido en que debieran hacer en vivo mas canciones de esa época, friends of mine, y late bar
I wouldn't even say they became a dance band, but more of a pop band. I think the point regarding Colin Thurston is bang on! The sound was not that bad on RIO, but after that it lacked the dark mysterious sound associated with early new romantic bands which had been the hallmark of DD.
I agree with many of you pointing to the first two albums as their best. Astronaut had semblances of that sound, but nothing close. I saw them in 2011 and was really disappointed at how little they played from Duran Duran and Rio. Recent shows (2015-2016) are much better, but they leave out way too much from these first two albums.
This is the Duran Duran that I only like. The first album was brilliant, the second OK. There performance on TOGWT was 10 times than what there like in concert. TOGWT would only allow none singles to be played.

Never deserved credit? They were HUGE in the 80s, they sold tens of millions of albums!! Not sure what you mean? We’re you born in 1995?
@@colonialstraits1069 its over 100 million now
They are one of only three British "New Pop" bands inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (with Depeche Mode and The Eurythmics)
The synthesizer is Heavenly. They all play SO well together.
The reel-to-reel!
Roto-toms!

This live performance is by far much better than the studio version. Perfect synchronization between them, what a talent!

Agreed. Roxy, Japan and Bowie. But something else, too.
Andy Taylor's my favourite, his guitars. Shame he sounds a wee bit buried in the mix, here
Ultravox 'Systems of Romance' 1978, synth, guitars, bass, drums and John Foxx on vocals. Pretty much the blueprint for this sort of thing.
It's a shame synthesizers were so subjective back then, I think anyone here can really appreciate Nick's subtle nuance of sound blending with the bass.
So true.
The sound is really cutting edge and original. Rock, synth and bass blended together. Great music with a great producer...... Songs that were original and lots of attitude. They should play the first two albums live as a single show ......
I agree and the B Sides to.
yeah tho. they took alot from david sylvian's band called Japan

This song is straight out of the Japan playbook.

To think, with all the tech you can get now, back then Nick could make that wonderful a noise with more basic keyboards & synth. Never gets old. x

Could not agree more! The sound quality and mood associated with these songs blew away most of what they did after Rio.

great song; love that intro!

So young and sound so clear. Simons lyrics are undeniably poetic. Best footage of the time and still holding its own.

That aria sb 1000 pro is expensive, but I'll scrap and save to get my hands on the black one like John Taylor uses
Those keyboard, guitar, guitar all is perfect and hypnotics)
Amazing sound! The synth, the bass, every sound merging together flawless into a superb song way ahead of the time it was released. I love DD.
WONDERFUL SONG AND VIDEO...GREAT DURAN DURAN!!!!
