@@petem7118 indeed. I'm the opposite to what you'd call a Duran Duran fan, and I grew up with them during high school. And yet this one song - last track on the Rio album - is glorious. If there's anything else by them, then only Save A Prayer or Planet Earth are worth checking out.
This is probably my favorite version of THE CHAUFFEUR. Simon’s vocals are incredible, Nick’s keyboards are haunting, and they all look drop dead gorgeous. D2 forever.
When my friends were listening to KISS I was listening to DD- always liked the electronic styled music a bit more, and the 80s had plenty of that . Plus, Nick Rhodes was always a stylish dude. Still is I see.
He sounds great here, unlike a live performance of DD doing Election Day I just watched. They did not sound good, yet people in the comments were raving. People are tone deaf.
Sorry it is a great song but Simon does not have a good voice at all. I saw them live back in ‘85 and I can tell you he can’t sing live. Autotuning is perfect for him. Having said that, it sounds good on record and the music is awesome
Rudy Arce Simon is singing totally OFF KEY. He does so consistently. I’m not a hater but I absolutely adore him and his vocals. Generation x,peace out fellow DD guy 😉🐨✌️
I agree with Todd Fraise’s comment above: the range or key might be lower here than the original studio. I get it, but his voice has gotten stronger with time and smoother like Todd said. Summon was not out of tone here, different key, but solid. As Vocal cords age, they can’t vibrate as high pitch as before. And you know that. I was taking that into consideration when I made my comment. You’re a hard critic. Great performance in general 🙂
Todd, I totally agree with you! He might he older now, I get it, it’s hard to sing high pitch, but his overall performance here in my opinion is flawless. The whole band’s performance was great 👍🏽
As a foreigner,I had no idea what they were singing when i was 20.When I listen that song on my headphones,i was nearly crying.I just said to myself:,,Who on earth composed that song?Must have been from space...``what a musicians!!!!and secondly WHAT A VOICE!?.Now still after many many years I am still addicted.
I got goosebumps reading that. When I first listened to this song, it was gripping. So sexy, compelling, advanced, dark and magical. So well said Mimi. I think anyone confronted with this musical brilliance must feel just like you. I’m happy I’m not alone.
I remember buying a flute just to learn the part he plays with the ocarina. I was obsessed with it's exotic and intoxicatingly elegant sound. To this day I still remember every riff and note from this song. My wife laughs everytime I hear it because it sends me looking for the old flute to show her I still got it..So many great memories, such a timeless masterpiece.
I’ve had sort of a Duran Duran renaissance the past week. And the Chaffeur was always near the top of my list. Then as now. I started listening in 84, after Seven and the ragged tiger, and during the underrated Arena (which I saw the film Sing Blue Silver for some days ago). Duran Duran were my world in those years. I was just 7, and they got pushed out in favor of U2 after Rattle And Hum came out. From then Duran faded, but never quite burned out. They will always be my heroes, even now at 47. I remember trying to convince my schoolmates of their brilliance, but they wouldn’t listen. When Notorious launched, I was confused (being still only 9), but forced myself to like that new sound. Still, those tracks from Seven and from Rio - they are still and ever the best. It was my childhood. And finally; this version of The Chaffeur gives me the chills. I always wondered what that flutey sound was, now I know. And the way the supported the finale with a building guitar riff is just the icing. Absolutely loved it. Thank you for uploading.
Seriously - these guys can perform. They were not just overly synthesized 80s crap..,their live performances were ALWAYS as good as their studio albums. Pretty rare in today’s music landscape.
Che dire... Dei grandissimi musicisti intramontabili! Un grazie particolare per avermi accompagnato nella mia adolescenza e per emozionarmi tutt'oggi!!
03:50 - 5:24 so dreamy, hypnotic and intoxicating. Simon's performance on the pipe is outstanding, and keyboards with guitar and bass are crushingly sensual, compressing such intensity into a Bacchic trance!
I was a huge fan as a young teenager, but stopped listening to pop music (moving towards blues rock, jazz and punk) when life became more serious in my late teens. I've recently started listening to them again - Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and others of that era - and was surprised to find how well the songs have aged, especially DD's. They're fantastic! In fact, they're better than I ever realised, back in the '80s.
@Mark_ _Whitfield was gona say that they are way older than me I just got to 50 and I feel young lol love this fabulous song my fave of this band and Simon is cool as in that cap
Even in his 60s, Simon sings this song beautifully and it takes some effort. Probably the most beautiful song they've ever done, and I say this as an old-school Duranie who thought Save a Prayer was the pinnacle when I was a pre-teen. Even then I knew this song was special though. Exquisite.
This and Save A Prayer, two best tracks ever. At his best Simon le Bon superb vocalist. Love DD. Always transport me back to good times early 80's. Privileged.
Best song by Duran Duran!! this song shows how really talented they are, they need to spend more time doing there own stuff like this&showing how musically brilliant they are..
É la canzone più dolce ed elegante che i Duran Duran abbiano mai suonato....non stanca mai ascoltarla ...é stupenda. Con gli anni ,poi, hanno imparato ad interpretarla sempre meglio
If you're British and grew up reading Smash Hits, do you remember the Anti Duran Duran League? Such hatred for a band! Us "Duranies" took a lot of flack! Listening now, all these years later, I can appreciate how skilled and talented they were (instead of just having a crush on each of them at one time or another!)
Great song. It's good to see all the boys again. I saw them at the San Diego Sportsarena in 1984. One of the best times of my life and probably 60 concerts later, that night in San Diego was the best concert I have ever seen. Simon is definitely a showman. I remember Simon jumping off 15 stairs, and sliding around on his knee pads and at the end of the concert, Simon nailed John and Andy I think it was, with pies. The concert was so loud, it took me hours to stop sounding like I was sucking on helium. I will never forget that. And if I become deaf early in age, it was all worth it.
When I was young I liked ''Wild Boys'' ''Union of the Snake'''etc but ''The Chauffer''.....What I've been missing all this years. Thank you D-D for this song. I can't get enough of this song.

Still chilling to listen to in 2024. A masterpiece.
Most casual fans only know their radio hits. Only DD's true fans recognize this song as one of their finest. This is real DD.
A gorgeous song, perfectly performed.
I’m 52, and I’ve loved this song since I was 11
I'm 54, and this is the best song they wrote imho 😊

I read this reply, every time I re-watch this version. Every time. It is THE BEST reply! Ever.
My favourite the instrumental is the 👌

Right?
so true a brilliant track most people will have missed
Nothing in 2024 equates to a fraction of this band
This is my song at 88.
I was 17 years old.
Duran duran is never getting old.....
just to let you know, im 40, and I recently found a new appreciation for this song. Its timeless, and will live on forever.

Best Duran song ever,...period!
yes !!!
+DJWerkz absolutely
~Meh! I couldn't pick one! Last Chance is up there! Late Bar, Save a Prayer, Careless, Notorious, Tel Aviv, Friends of Mine, Night Boat, etc.
the deftones version is a nice one too
The Chris Corner duet with Simon Le Bon in Tokyo on this song is killer compared to this imo.
This song always gives me shivers.
Same🥰
Always!
I love this version. Simon has a beautiful voice.

It's gotten better with age
I've seen duran Duran live every decade and trust me Simon's vocals are beautiful everytime. He's amazing
Simon's voice is flawless and the in general the performance of the band is without blemish. Epic master peace! Timeless, no doubt.
His voice has gotten better with age, not in range but in strength and smoothness. I think he has learned to control it perfectly.

Absolutely agree
Forse la canzone che più volte ho ascoltato in un solo giorno ! A 18 anni, ne ero drogato...assuefatto. Resta tutt'ora un gran pezzo soft...
Never again will we hear music like this!!
And instantly the 80s remind us that We can live forever for 5 minutes and 24 seconds

10/10 Duran. This will go down as probably the best Duran song ever. Well done.

Out on the tar plains, the glides are moving
All looking for a new place to drive
You sit beside me so newly charming
Sweating dewdrops glisten freshing your side
And the sun drips down bedding heavy behind
The front of your dress, all shadowy lined
And the droning engine throbs in time
With your beating heart
Way down the lane away, living for another day
The aphids swarm up in the drifting haze
Swim seagull in the sky towards that hollow western isle
My envied lady holds you fast in her gaze
And the sun drips down bedding heavy behind
The front of your dress, all shadowy lined
And the droning engine throbs in time
With your beating heart
And the sun drips down bedding heavy behind
The front of your dress, all shadowy lined
And the droning engine throbs in time
With your beating heart
Sing blue silver
And watching lovers part, I feel you smiling
What glass splinters lie so deep in your mind
To tear out from your eyes, with a thought to stiffen brooding lies
And I'll only watch you leave me further behind
And the sun drips down bedding heavy behind
The front of your dress, all shadowy lined
And the droning engine throbs in time
With your beating heart
And the sun drips down bedding heavy behind
The front of your dress, all shadowy lined
And the droning engine throbs in time
With your beating heart
Sing blue silver
Sing, sing, blue silver
