You are the kiddie....so how many whistle test new year's eve shows aired and during live aid did they run a vote for the best music vid - which Ramones won???? Or did I dream this whole video vote Ramones, psychedelic furs b.s....??????
@@JJONNYREPP There was a video vote running during the Whistle Test Rock Around the Clock show from September 21st 1986, the Ramones won that, I can't remember a video vote during Live Aid.
At the age of 53, I can safely say for a time and a place there has never been a TV performance that ever meant so much to me. We were late on the go with a video recorder but this was played to death... Smiths as a 5 piece and our man with a tie.. Nice intro by Andy.. 👌
The two months from “Bigmouth” through to “Panic” marked The Smiths imperial phase. For that brief period they were the best group in the whole world, and as this and their performance on “Euro Tube” a few weeks later demonstrated, they knew it.
Id not agree - some good tracks but overall the lustre had gone. Mind you Rourke's bass playing was getting better and better. His work here on Bigmouth is John Taylor/Rio level of propelling the song along.
I always come back to this performance. One of my favorite ones, if not the favorite one. Sometimes I wish The Smiths lasted longer together..., but maybe it's their impact achieved in such a short time that makes them so special ❤
@@TheZumph he missed the Fall, Gang of 4, Wire (154 came out in 1980, no, and come to that Closer certainly did). The Televison Personalities, Magazine, Swell Maps and if we're talking 'influence' as he appears to be doing, the Banshees, Bauhaus, Killing Joke, Josef K, New Order and many, many more, tho' British music dropped off markedly after 1982 (or halfway through 1982 to be precise).
I like Andy, a good presenter. Most people with VCRs at this time would just record the bands they wanted from shows missing out the presenters and intros. I most often would just record full shows, which means I have many 100% complete Whistle Tests, Tube, etc.
@@angelariley908 Loads, I'd guess 100 hours worth of videotape, just of The Smiths. I was not a big fan at the time and there were way bigger collectors of the smiths than I. Most of the concerts etc that I have were ones I recorded direct from TV or from people I knew for a fact had filmed the Smiths on tours.
I can actually remember watching this programme I worked in a chicken processing factory at the time and I was 18 years old and living in the North of England maximum respect to the smiths for playing Carlisle twice at the height of their career and at the height of their career they were the biggest band in the world
In their existence, The Smiths were never the biggest band in the world (Dire Straits and U2 sold far more records than them), but they were undoubtedly the best.
Saw this interview with Gannon in which he revealed some nasty details about being in the band. He also talked about his contribution on There's a light. He is a fantastic plucker, that amazed me.
I saw an interview where he said that he was 'just eating a chicken sandwich on the tour coach and Johnny walked passed me and gave this horrible look' (or words to that effect). It must have been the chicken which prompted it. He wasn't with The Smiths when they recorded TIALTNGO, but he did sue them for his contribution to 'Ask'.
Been a Morrissey fan since 1995 and this is the first time I've seen him wearing a tie. It looks great. Another observation: Andy was dragging the tempo on this. Rare to see him not in top form. He was off heroin by this point, so that can't be the excuse.
It's funny that he never wears a tie, considering he is often in a collared shirt. I think it's because he has to be ready to undo the small amount of buttons he even has done up, and to throw the shirt into the crowd 😂
Johnny explains in his book that Craig was drafted in as a replacement bass player for Andy as he was on a heroin sabbatical. He returned quickly as they felt without the band around his health was deteriorating faster. Once back they didn't want to fire Craig and asked him to play 2nd guitar. Johnny enjoyed the extra freedom. Sadly Craig never fitted into the close-knit band and quickly left.

Well said. This was a group at the top.
It's just The Tube, not Euro Tube.

He is on fire here. Wow😮
it's nowhere near the utter brilliance of Sabrina, though
It’s 2020. And I still fucking love the Smiths. I remember seeing this on live TV as a kid. Utterly blew me away. Have been a fan ever since.

PiL's legacy endures, but Andy Kershaw described them as "Progressive rock" 😂👀 (on the same episode as this Smith's performance no less)

Andy Rourke with the mighty slab body Precision Bass.

Saw them on a pier in NYC that same year.
August 6th 1986, was it a good show?
