I've been using journals and planning tools since I was about 9 years old and I am 50 now. This was some how always my thing. I only found UA-cam videos in 2013. Only then I started getting obsessed with jumping from one system to another and feeling unsatisfied and anxious....There is too much show and tell here and on IG on expensive leather cover collections and expensive tomoe river planners! Who can afford such things in wisdom. It seems so unreal and unnecessary to me. I have never purchased a Traveler's notebook cover or insert, a Gillio or VDS, Hobonichi planners or covers or sterling ink or any other. I make my own stuff by purchasing really affordable materials. I am in no way a professional. I just have learned that buying more stuff is never going to satisfy...it will become about the hunt for the perfect planner/notebook/system/cover.....It will never be enough. Real productive planning/journaling only requires a pen and paper: any pen and any paper. I think keeping things simple is wisdom. Thank you for starting the conversation.

Thank you for your comment! I agree about simplicity, even though my planner is in no way simple 😂 I guess the anxiety often comes from having too much choice, at least in my case.

Being outside of America and living in a different currency means I don't really have access to all that incredible variety of planners I see on YT for "too expensive for my 3rd world country budget". And I've been bookbinding for several years now, so I make my own journals. I like the freedom to change layouts and styles, and making my own also gives the choice in paper and size. And binding too, I can get them coil bound, and I even had a disc binding love affair for a couple of years.
But still, after all that, I still got caught in the artistic, heavily decorative trend. I wanted my pages to look like the pretty spreads I saw online, and somehow it made me less prone to journal. It became a chore, it was frustrating no to have "beautiful" pages, or all the stickers, or whatnot. I alwaya loved journaling and planning, but I just... wasn't. It took me a little while to figure it out, but I'm reverting back to what I like, my own aesthetics, what works for me. Internet is a great thing, but FOMO and the perceived pressure to "perform" (in the form of making things like other people) is killing the joy of almost EVERYTHING these days.

I completely relate to not living in America and having access to limited amount of brands. When I first started watching journaling video, it was impossible to order anything. Now I have access to more things but I still only focus on the essentials. I have one planner per year and a 5-year journal every five years. I buy a lot of stickers, but for me it is what motivates me to plan, and I try to buy from local brands. Did you think about making videos on binding and making your own journals? Because it sounds amazing!

@planning_plain I use a happy planner with one week per page. I have a hp punch, so I can add stuff and take it out as I please.

So true 😢 Carol Ryder (the creator of BuJo methodology) always pays attention that notes' creativeness and beauty should not prevail over effectiveness and the purpose of journaling/planning.

The only thing that saved me from Hobonichi was that I didn’t find Ukraine on their website in the delivery list. I decided to leave this idea until trip to Japan))

I love this kind of planner community content! It's much more helpful and comforting than seeing someone else's setup or whatever.
For me, a lot of the anxiety boils down to uncertainty. For the past few years, and still, I've been in a place in life where I just *don't know* what my life is going to look like in a year's time. Life's unexpected. Stuff happens. When choosing a planner for the next year, I have to try to predict what my life will look like in a year's time! And I don't know that. What if I predict wrong? What if halfway through the year, my life changes, and I need something drastically different from my planner than I initially thought I would? That causes me a lot of stress and anxiety.
Now I'm trying to approach 2024 planners with a mindset of choosing what will be the most flexible for me. Which planner(s) might best adapt to whatever life might throw at me? I might go to university again next fall, after a 5 year break, but I also might not. I don't know yet. So I think, for now, the most flexible option for me would be a bullet journal and a Hobonichi Weeks. That combination have worked for me in a myriad of different circumstances. They're both very adaptable. And *if* I go to university in the fall of 2024, and I need more from my planners than what I've got, I can look for an undated planner to carry me through to 2025 :)

Thanks a lot for your comment! I would like to do more videos about the actual planning and goal setting, not just the aesthetic side of it. I know exactly what you mean by life being unexpected - I am soon moving to another country for the THIRD time in the last three years and I have no clue how that’s going to go😂 I am going to university too, in September, and I am very anxious about my planner being enough for work, studies, and wellness

I discovered you when I was looking for a review of the Common planer. I really enjoy your content and feel relieved that I am not the only person struggeling with planer perfectionism. Even though I have a different concept of aesthetics I already got so much inspiration of your set ups and Iam looking forward to your upcoming videos. Thank you!❤

Watching insights like these firms up my resolve to hold back on splurging. 😂 the core of Ryder Carroll's system is function first. I think you first encountered the aesthetics, which became the offshoot of the original system. Nothing wrong with that. 😅 I joined the bujo late so I was more intentional to look for functional system. I'm glad you shared this video because I also go through this phase. Learning these things make me more self-aware and protect my mental health. Super agree with everything you said.

I’m honestly happy that I started bullet journaling back in 2014 when videos were about how to track different things, which signifieres we used and not about how to make it pretty! Don’t get me wrong - I heavily decorate my planner but it’s a hobby I found along the way when I also already had established a planning system. It must be so intimidating to start now with all the pretty journals!
And I absolutely agree to the overplanning aspect! It’s a trap society drives us to!
Thanks for sharing your point of view! 😊

Very good video. After retiring, I stopped using a planner, but realized I needed to actually get some stuff done but was having trouble actually doing it. I've been using a Franklin Planner ring classic size. Started with a weekly, figuring I was retired and didn't need daily pages. However, in May I realized I needed Daily pages and I ordered those and had anxiety seeing those unused weeklies. LOL. I'm using this year to figure out what works for my brain. I have a lot of hobbies and am still figuring out how to document the steps in my larger projects. I've also been figuring out my values and roles and developing goals in those areas and planning those goals into my schedule. (Like visiting my daughter and her family out of state at least once a quarter. It's been awesome.)

Love your insight and your advice! I have been through the same struggles, especially feeling guilty for not fully using every planner I bought or following the hot trend. I do feel that buying and going through a variety of planners and notebooks (types and sizes) helped me figure out what I like and what I don't, what works for me and what doesn't. Love watching your videos! :)

Thank you for sharing a true fact, the idea that we must plan according to the so called "main stream" or what is shown in social media. I have been planning since I was 16 years old. I am now back to basics and using the system with intention= keeping it simple. Lesson i've learnt is enjoying what I have and using it with freedom. I define freedom from day to day.

This was very helpful. I have gone through several of the phases you describe. It IS inspiring to see all the creativity in the planner community, but it can be so intimidating too! Then add to this my own habit of journal keeping, with all the gorgeous things people do in art journals, and it's a recipe for self loathing after a while! 🤣 Thank you for going deep into the reasons we struggle with these things. 💗

Great insight. Shame and guilt permeate so many areas of our life and a planner system should not be one of them! So liberating when you give yourself permission to let it go and move on. Easier said then done as I struggled to finish a very popular book and did not enjoy any of it and found I was getting bitter against the community that referred it to me - seriously?! Haha now I'm learning the empowerment of 'no thank you'. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for your comment! I had the same situation with the book - I read half of “Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow”, didn’t enjoy it, but was anxious to stop. I felt like I don’t get something that other people get, as there are so many great reviews. But I allowed myself to give up on it, and read another book instead, which I enjoyed a lot)

As I have mentioned in the video, when I had this issue, I tried to look deeper into it. Maybe you are anxious about the future or your goals? Maybe it is perfectionism and you are worried that your planner won't look as good as some planner you see online? I might be wrong and I am not a specialist in psychology, but maybe if you try to identify the root of this anxiety, it will be easier for you?
Another technique that I heard about is: don't write things for the future. Start with writing what has already happened. For example, today I did this and that. And this should help you celebrate your achievements before setting any new goals.

Just use $1 composition notebook and $1 pen. Problem is solved.
