The latest cockamamie industry-analyst explanation was "Audiences don't like sci-fi action!", and Michael Eisner, in full panic mode, switched gears on Treasure Planet's marketing and tried to sell it as a wacky comedy. So now I have another reason to hate this movie besides the despicably looney bullying characters.
Yeah I'm a Christian and when I heard Milo say it was from the Book of Job I was all 'what?!' and got me to go read and see that... yeah, it does describe a fire breathing kaiju.
i think the reason so much was forgotten was due to the culture being cut off from the world. like: the vehicles they used are clearly used as weapons during whatever war they were fighting and thus, no war no need for them. sure, maybe at one point in time they did use them for travel, but maybe due, again, being so remote and possibly finding nothing outside the village they found nothing to help them, they began to use them less and less, slowly forgetting how to use them. it's like if we had no wars (shocking idea, i know) and we just forgot how to work tanks or aircraft seeing as clearly they operate differently than normal modes of transportation, we would have a hard time figuring how it works without killing ourselves. that's just my thought on the idea of how a culture that clearly has multiple languages memorized can forget how something works. that and only needing so little to live helps.
This is honestly my fave Disney movie, mostly because of the aesthetics - music and visuals are just so beautiful I'm still obsessed with it after all these years. I had this on a VHS tape and forced my poor parents to play it almost every day. Death Toll: - thousands or millions of Atlanteans in the prologue - around 150 expedition members during the Leviathan attack - further... 20-ish during the firefly incident - the King - unknown number of Atlanteans during the volcano fight (let's say... 1 to 10) - Helga, Rourke, and every other unnamed expedition member during the volcano fight (20ish people again) Soooo yeah, pretty violent. I'm not a fan of the sequel, watched it a couple times but it's just blatantly a short tv adventure series hastily stitched into a movie, with none of the imagination of this one. Fun fact: if the movie feels rushed, that's because it is - the creators ran out of money about halfway through the production and had to wrap the second half up much faster than they wanted to.
Despite its short comings, like rourkes motivation, id say this is a near perfect movie, thanks for listing most of the reasons i love it and yes the death toll made this more mature and i like that.
The idea for a sequel to the movie had Helga revealed as surviving but in a Darth Vader/Bane type apparatus to keep her alive. Wish that'd have been a thing or a tv series to have spawned from it. The best part about the sequel we got was the HP Lovecraft section, never thought I'd see that stuff in a Disney movie.
Death isn't inherently violent, though. You'd have a hard time finding any Disney movie in which no one dies. I'd say without a doubt that the Hunchback of Notre Dame is the most violent Disney movie I've seen, to the point it upset me greatly as a kid and I've had trouble watching it since, even. Definitely wasn't the case for Atlantis. Atlantis is and was the actual goat of original-style animated movies, as far as I'm concerned. It's not a toddler movie for sure, but it's real while still being uplifting and especially engaging and exciting.
The sequel is just a couple of episodes from the cartoon they planned to make. Atlantis and Treasure Planet are highly underrated movies. And when ppl question why Disney is so creatively bankrupt nowadays, I usually try to point at the failures of the things they clearly put a lot of effort in as why Disney doesn’t try anymore :(
Exactly. Stuff like this only ever sold poorly because Disney itself tanked them since they took more money and effort to make. People actually love them and miss the ethic behind them.
Yeah every time someone complains about Disney's live action remakes and Disney being creatively bankrupt I bring up stuff like Atlantis and how when Disney was doing new stuff they never showed up to support it and ONLY showed up for the Disney stuff they keep remaking.

The unusual looking hands were an homage by the Disney artists to comic book artist Mike Mignola. He did much of the concept art for the film. The animation artists wanted to have the film reflect Mignola's style. His characters often square shaped hands with blunt fingers.
They made the lion King as live action which is a movie that did not need any fixing. Atlantis is good as it is, but it does have problems with plot holes, characters and (to me) not enough time spend learning about the people of Atlantis. They could have improved this so much with a live action. And they spend many millions on movies that never needed it. Why Disney why.

I really don’t recommend watching the “sequel”, if you can even call it that. Disney wanted to make a series after the movie, they released 3 episodes and made it a “movie” then cancelled it because it wasn’t successful. On another note, if you think about it Kida is the first Disney Queen, even if they refuse to make her an actual princess.
One of the most underrated Disney movies and it's such a shame. Maybe they should consider a live action remake for this? Could be very epic! And could give the original some much needed attention too.
I've always loved this film. It felt a lot more mature, and that's partly thanks to the fact that the characters didn't sing. It's also funny because the animation style and especially the hands of the characters tend to be beloved by people who grew up to love this film. Also, I had a crush on both Milo, Audrey AND Helga. Helga reminded me of Lara Croft for some reason. My bisexual awakening lol also, if a woman inherits the throne and becomes queen, her husband would still only be a prince, not a king, because the title of "king" would assume he was above her in rank. And they did marry. I always liked that they didn't have a kiss in this movie. It makes their love feel a lot deeper than just "oh she's the love interest". I even think this film didn't need a love interest, but Milo and Kida just happened to fall in love, and that felt a lot more natural than forcing a lot of romantic scenes

Atlantis 2: Milo's Return is the sequel to this movie. It's a movie made of the 3 completed episodes to a show that would have been made if Atlantis was more successful so, if you watch the sequel, you'll see 3 different stories all throughout the viewing. It's a real shame, too. It was revealed that there would have been a crossover episode with Gargoyles had the show become a reality.
It kinda ticks me off how you reference this early 2000's disney movies as for "the boys" when at least for my generation (90's), these movies (Atlantis, Treasure Planet The Emperor's new groove, etc) were a huge thing for everyone my age, no matter boys, girls, enbies, wtv, and I haven't met anyone from my age group that hasn't seen them, I mean Kida was a huge inspiration

Fun fact, there's a fully animated and voiced deleted scene where you see a Viking using the Shepherd's Journal to try and find Atlantis, only for his ship to be sunk by the Leviathan. Does make me wonder how the Journal got to Iceland when it would've sank with the Viking's ship. Also, something interesting about this movie is the way it plays on DVD and on the VHS are very different. Several good examples are from 3 scenes, 2 involving Rourke and Helga. The first is when they're driving over the bridge towards Atlantis. In the version you watched, they're both on screen at the same time so you see them visibly reaction to each as Helga mentions that there being people living in Atlantis changes everything, even if Rourke says it changes nothing. On the VHS copies, it would only show each of them as they were talking. The second scene is in the hut where Milo and co are eating with the Atlantians. In this version, you see Vinnie, Sweet and Moliere all on screen at the same time as they're eating and Sweet's explaining eating the heads is where all the nutrients are. In the VHS version, it starts on Vinnie, cuts to Sweet, who says his bit, then it pans the tiniest bit out and to the side as Moliere belches. The third example is the second Helga and Rourke scene, right after they've revealed their true plan to Milo. In this version, the both of them are on screen as they discuss doubling or tripling what they plan on charging for the Crystal. In the VHS copies, it cuts between the two of them as they discuss it, neither on screen at the same time. Watching Atlantis nowadays (which I coincidentally did 2 nights ago), when I grew up on the VHS version, is Still a little jarring.
Not necessarily, I struggled to learn to read when I was younger and well into my teens. I love reading now, but not everyone can keep up with the speed of subtitles even as adults.

This film has been my obsession since I was a little girl. I hear so many women saying that Kida was their gay awakening, and who can blame them? Kida is amazing. The music is great, the animation is beautiful, the relationship between Kida and Milo is so wholesome. The characters are diverse and fun. There was so much research done for this film to be made! The Atlantean culture is usually based on Greco-Roman stuff but not in this one! The Atlantean language is an ACTUAL language you can learn just like Klingon. The fashion and time period are unlike any other Disney film and the main character Milo is a great role model for little kids to look up to. He's smart and passionate and a bit of a nerd with a good heart. Overall I think that what makes Altantis such a cult classic and so underrated is that when you compare it to Disney's usual brand it feels like a misfit. But in my opinion, that is part of the charm :) Thank you for your reaction and feedback on the film. It's fascinating to hear someone talk about it for the first time.
Only a couple of years they hit it out of the park with a far greater misfit. Pirates of the Caribbean... It's really a shame because if these cult classic movies were to come out now, I'm sure they would've garnered far greater success and recognition...

This movie is so freaking cool and the critics at the time hated it because they were expecting talking animals & singing. They hated it for them trying something new. They said "it wasn't Disney" or whatever. What a shame. I saw this as a kid, too. I loved it.
The opening with Atlantis sinking wasn't the original opening. It was changed sometime in-between the film being shown to test audiences and its full theatrical release. Some of the original opening was even in trailers for the film. It was changed as it was felt the audience might not be able to sympathise with the Atlantians without seeing what had happened. Yeah I was confused about how shocked he was that people died. Just about any Disney movie, cartoon in general and especially original fairytales had death in them. I dunno about him, but I grew up watching these movies and being read/reading those fairytales and it never shocked me as a kid nearly as much as it seems to shock him as an adult, lol.

This is my favorite animated film ever, and I continually rewatch it despite what the critics said about its plot and character development flaws. I think my love for it has more to do with simply how beautiful I think is, to the color scheme, character model designs, and the music omg the music haha. The theme for Atlantis, especially the version that plays as the end, is one of my favorite instrumental pieces. It weirdly brings a sense of nostalgia and longing but it's comforting at the same time. I've been looking for more reaction videos to this film as I really think it's a lost gem and I'm glad I find you!
Dude. I was around 10 when this came out, if I remember correctly. Kida is my favorite Disney princess (not Princess) ever. I adored this movie. If not for Lilo and Stitch, this would be my favorite post-Renaissance movie.
I honestly like all of the post renaissance movies more. Aside from Beast looking really cool in Beauty and the Beast, and Mulan just being more action focused. I didn't connect with them. Lilo and Stitch, Treasure Planet, Emperor's New Groove and Atlantis are just movies I can connect with better and I love their worlds far more.
I love this movie, one of the most underrated animated films ever :) its very different from your usual Disney, there arent that many usual tropes you are used to, its pretty mature, its a straight out adventure film, its really entertaining, its beautiful, its unique :) The Iron Giant, Atlantis and The Last Unicorn are like the holy trinity of animated movies that just werent so popular at first and didnt do well but would definitely recommend everybody to watch them :)
I love that you mentioned that this would be a perfect way to retheme 20k Leagues Under the Sea if this movie had been more successful, because that was actually the plan originally! i've always loved the animation, the lore of Atlantis and the cast and characters that filled this little adventure. sure~ the twist villain was obvious even for 10 year old me and sure~ the story is just "Adventure for a hidden civilization" but with a likeable main lead and a good script with good dialogue, it's still one of my favorites. maybe like top 10 of Disney's movies. I'd have to look over them though. maybe by decade or eras.

Sadly the sequel is just three pilot episodes mashed together into one movie from a series that never aired so it's not that good. But Atlantis has been my favorite movie since I was probably 6 years old.
I was 7 when this movie came out and I loved it! I even had the Kida doll they released (though sadly I never got Milo). I used to wear the crystal necklace that came with the doll every time I went to the pool. I really loved the early 2000s movies Disney released, even if they're not the best the company produced. They're just all over the place with the story pitches

Disney's Atlantis is still one of my favorite Disney movies, definitely my favorite underrated/forgotten one ^^ and I agree, there's a lot of great park attraction potential The sequel, as some have already pointed out, is basically a collection of three episodes for a potential (yet ultimately scrapped) TV series they wanted to make It IS worth a watch if you enjoy the characters, creatures/machines and mystic stuff that comes with Atlantis, but you shouldn't go into it with too big of an expectation (Also it does finally tell us Mole's story that Sweet didn't want us to know XD)
If you do decide to check out the second film, bear in mind that it isn't actually a second movie at all. Instead it is the canceled television series, the few episodes they made smushed together into one thing.

02:20 Wow indeed. This might be the most underappreciated Disney movie, especially considering the effort they put into making it. The production took them 7 years, and they even hired a linguist to invent a whole new constructed language and alphabet for the movie. And 3 years of that just for animating the Leviathan in 3D. The music score composed by James Newton Howard was also amazing. The story writing and characters are very good too - something that children as well as grown ups can enjoy. Too bad the sequel wasn't that great :q 07:44 Oh there is a princess all right ;> 16:30 They can speak their own language (and they do several on occasions in the movie), but they lost the knowledge about the alphabet, so they can't read it. But yeah, that's kind of a stretch, considering that I was able to decode the alphabet just from its examples in the movie (and my Rosetta stone was the title itself). But even without that, I would most likely crack it in a couple of days from statistical analysis of their texts. So it's a bit weird that they were unable to do that for those hundreds of years :q
i think one of the main reasons it suffered was because the marketing was INCREDIBLY VAGUE. like i think they were trying to keep a lot of it a surprise but in doing so we literally knew NOTHING sbout what this was about. if u look at the old trailers for this movie, they dont really tell u anything about it, not enough to become invested. which is ashame because its one of my childhood faves but i remember as a kid seeing the trailers and going "meh" but then my grandma bought it for me a few years later and i LOVED IT once i watched it

I grew up watching barbie movies at the same time as these movies, and this remains my favorite animated Disney film to date XD. This and Treasure Planet. They were so much more exciting than any of the princess stuff, and it made me love Sci-Fi and Adventure genres so much more!

I was like 6 or 7 when I first saw this movie. It is still my favorite Disney movie. I remember getting Strep Throat and an Ear Infection at the same time and my mom had me sleep out on the couch. She put in this movie for me and would come every out every other hour to check on me and rewind the movie so I could have something to keep my mind off of the pain. The memory of this is probably a big part of why I love this movie so much. It kills me that Atlantis didn't do well. I would have loved to go on a ride based off of this movie at Disney World or Disney Land.

Like Treasure Planet another all time favorite I grew up with and only appreciated more as I grew but others didn't see it that way, it's almost criminal. The Heart or Crystal is made up of the souls and minds of Atlantians that came before to the very beginning of their culture, essentially gaining the power equivalent to a Deity with the minds of thousands. My guess is with all that knowledge the Crystal probably calculated the best possible outcome to protect its people and help them come back from the brink, hence why it surrendered itself, to give Milo the push he needed to do what was right and save Atlantis. If the Crystal had fought them, lives would have been lost and everyone would have feared or greeded for the Crystals power. By remaining neutral and letting the people fight for themselves without fully relying on its power they were able to reunlock their lost potential and now once again, Atlantis will thrive.

Loved the movie as a kid. Was a bum it didn't end up a hit. Came out when I was a preteen. Was the right age to know some history and mythology and it really sparked a lot of interest and fascination there. The aesthetic was great. The submarine and oher human stuff was really neat cutting edge early 20th century tech. And the Atlantean aesthetic and tech was visually great. A real shame it didn't become a hit. If the adventure disney land based on Jules Vern and steampunk stuff had been a thing this film would've fit in there real well.
this is such an underrated movie and i love it, it's just an epic rather than the usual disney musicals (which i also love). i would honestly like to see a live action with more in depth mythology cause i think it has so much potential story and world building wise!
Kida said all knowledge was lost during the Great Flood. So my theory is that all the scholars and those who knew the technology perished in the flood because they where on the outskirts of the main city.

The guy who voiced Vinny improvised all of his lines he had the script in front of with his lines and would do his own thing.

The idea for a sequel to the movie had Helga revealed as surviving but in a Darth Vader/Bane type apparatus to keep her alive. Wish that'd have been a thing or a tv series to have spawned from it. The best part about the sequel we got was the HP Lovecraft section, never thought I'd see that stuff in a Disney movie.

Death isn't inherently violent, though. You'd have a hard time finding any Disney movie in which no one dies. I'd say without a doubt that the Hunchback of Notre Dame is the most violent Disney movie I've seen, to the point it upset me greatly as a kid and I've had trouble watching it since, even. Definitely wasn't the case for Atlantis. Atlantis is and was the actual goat of original-style animated movies, as far as I'm concerned. It's not a toddler movie for sure, but it's real while still being uplifting and especially engaging and exciting.
The sequel is just a couple of episodes from the cartoon they planned to make. Atlantis and Treasure Planet are highly underrated movies. And when ppl question why Disney is so creatively bankrupt nowadays, I usually try to point at the failures of the things they clearly put a lot of effort in as why Disney doesn’t try anymore :(
Exactly. Stuff like this only ever sold poorly because Disney itself tanked them since they took more money and effort to make. People actually love them and miss the ethic behind them.
Yeah every time someone complains about Disney's live action remakes and Disney being creatively bankrupt I bring up stuff like Atlantis and how when Disney was doing new stuff they never showed up to support it and ONLY showed up for the Disney stuff they keep remaking.

I watched Atlantis: The Lost Empire for the first time on January 31st 2021. It's a classic. It reminded me of Stargate and James Cameron's Avatar.
The ending battle feels very similar to Avatar (or vice versa)

The unusual looking hands were an homage by the Disney artists to comic book artist Mike Mignola. He did much of the concept art for the film. The animation artists wanted to have the film reflect Mignola's style. His characters often square shaped hands with blunt fingers.

This is one of the movies that could be done in live action and actually be decent. This movie is terribly underrated.
They made the lion King as live action which is a movie that did not need any fixing. Atlantis is good as it is, but it does have problems with plot holes, characters and (to me) not enough time spend learning about the people of Atlantis. They could have improved this so much with a live action. And they spend many millions on movies that never needed it. Why Disney why.

I really don’t recommend watching the “sequel”, if you can even call it that. Disney wanted to make a series after the movie, they released 3 episodes and made it a “movie” then cancelled it because it wasn’t successful. On another note, if you think about it Kida is the first Disney Queen, even if they refuse to make her an actual princess.

I've always loved this film. It felt a lot more mature, and that's partly thanks to the fact that the characters didn't sing. It's also funny because the animation style and especially the hands of the characters tend to be beloved by people who grew up to love this film. Also, I had a crush on both Milo, Audrey AND Helga. Helga reminded me of Lara Croft for some reason. My bisexual awakening lol also, if a woman inherits the throne and becomes queen, her husband would still only be a prince, not a king, because the title of "king" would assume he was above her in rank. And they did marry. I always liked that they didn't have a kiss in this movie. It makes their love feel a lot deeper than just "oh she's the love interest". I even think this film didn't need a love interest, but Milo and Kida just happened to fall in love, and that felt a lot more natural than forcing a lot of romantic scenes

Atlantis 2: Milo's Return is the sequel to this movie. It's a movie made of the 3 completed episodes to a show that would have been made if Atlantis was more successful so, if you watch the sequel, you'll see 3 different stories all throughout the viewing.
It's a real shame, too. It was revealed that there would have been a crossover episode with Gargoyles had the show become a reality.
It was a pretty neat concept for a series, too.
It kinda ticks me off how you reference this early 2000's disney movies as for "the boys" when at least for my generation (90's), these movies (Atlantis, Treasure Planet The Emperor's new groove, etc) were a huge thing for everyone my age, no matter boys, girls, enbies, wtv, and I haven't met anyone from my age group that hasn't seen them, I mean Kida was a huge inspiration

Fun fact, there's a fully animated and voiced deleted scene where you see a Viking using the Shepherd's Journal to try and find Atlantis, only for his ship to be sunk by the Leviathan.
Does make me wonder how the Journal got to Iceland when it would've sank with the Viking's ship.
Also, something interesting about this movie is the way it plays on DVD and on the VHS are very different.
Several good examples are from 3 scenes, 2 involving Rourke and Helga.
The first is when they're driving over the bridge towards Atlantis.
In the version you watched, they're both on screen at the same time so you see them visibly reaction to each as Helga mentions that there being people living in Atlantis changes everything, even if Rourke says it changes nothing.
On the VHS copies, it would only show each of them as they were talking.
The second scene is in the hut where Milo and co are eating with the Atlantians.
In this version, you see Vinnie, Sweet and Moliere all on screen at the same time as they're eating and Sweet's explaining eating the heads is where all the nutrients are.
In the VHS version, it starts on Vinnie, cuts to Sweet, who says his bit, then it pans the tiniest bit out and to the side as Moliere belches.
The third example is the second Helga and Rourke scene, right after they've revealed their true plan to Milo.
In this version, the both of them are on screen as they discuss doubling or tripling what they plan on charging for the Crystal.
In the VHS copies, it cuts between the two of them as they discuss it, neither on screen at the same time.
Watching Atlantis nowadays (which I coincidentally did 2 nights ago), when I grew up on the VHS version, is Still a little jarring.
This is more 'movie' than 'musical'.

This film has been my obsession since I was a little girl. I hear so many women saying that Kida was their gay awakening, and who can blame them? Kida is amazing. The music is great, the animation is beautiful, the relationship between Kida and Milo is so wholesome. The characters are diverse and fun. There was so much research done for this film to be made! The Atlantean culture is usually based on Greco-Roman stuff but not in this one! The Atlantean language is an ACTUAL language you can learn just like Klingon.
The fashion and time period are unlike any other Disney film and the main character Milo is a great role model for little kids to look up to. He's smart and passionate and a bit of a nerd with a good heart.
Overall I think that what makes Altantis such a cult classic and so underrated is that when you compare it to Disney's usual brand it feels like a misfit.
But in my opinion, that is part of the charm :) Thank you for your reaction and feedback on the film. It's fascinating to hear someone talk about it for the first time.
Only a couple of years they hit it out of the park with a far greater misfit. Pirates of the Caribbean... It's really a shame because if these cult classic movies were to come out now, I'm sure they would've garnered far greater success and recognition...

The opening with Atlantis sinking wasn't the original opening. It was changed sometime in-between the film being shown to test audiences and its full theatrical release. Some of the original opening was even in trailers for the film. It was changed as it was felt the audience might not be able to sympathise with the Atlantians without seeing what had happened. Yeah I was confused about how shocked he was that people died. Just about any Disney movie, cartoon in general and especially original fairytales had death in them. I dunno about him, but I grew up watching these movies and being read/reading those fairytales and it never shocked me as a kid nearly as much as it seems to shock him as an adult, lol.

This is my favorite animated film ever, and I continually rewatch it despite what the critics said about its plot and character development flaws. I think my love for it has more to do with simply how beautiful I think is, to the color scheme, character model designs, and the music omg the music haha. The theme for Atlantis, especially the version that plays as the end, is one of my favorite instrumental pieces. It weirdly brings a sense of nostalgia and longing but it's comforting at the same time. I've been looking for more reaction videos to this film as I really think it's a lost gem and I'm glad I find you!
Dude. I was around 10 when this came out, if I remember correctly. Kida is my favorite Disney princess (not Princess) ever. I adored this movie. If not for Lilo and Stitch, this would be my favorite post-Renaissance movie.
I honestly like all of the post renaissance movies more. Aside from Beast looking really cool in Beauty and the Beast, and Mulan just being more action focused. I didn't connect with them. Lilo and Stitch, Treasure Planet, Emperor's New Groove and Atlantis are just movies I can connect with better and I love their worlds far more.
I love this movie, one of the most underrated animated films ever :) its very different from your usual Disney, there arent that many usual tropes you are used to, its pretty mature, its a straight out adventure film, its really entertaining, its beautiful, its unique :) The Iron Giant, Atlantis and The Last Unicorn are like the holy trinity of animated movies that just werent so popular at first and didnt do well but would definitely recommend everybody to watch them :)

i've always loved the animation, the lore of Atlantis and the cast and characters that filled this little adventure. sure~ the twist villain was obvious even for 10 year old me and sure~ the story is just "Adventure for a hidden civilization" but with a likeable main lead and a good script with good dialogue, it's still one of my favorites. maybe like top 10 of Disney's movies. I'd have to look over them though. maybe by decade or eras.
course it's wild to know what movies it had to fight in theaters and almost won to: Sherk coming out around that time and lost to Lora Croft. wonder how that won. 3

Sadly the sequel is just three pilot episodes mashed together into one movie from a series that never aired so it's not that good. But Atlantis has been my favorite movie since I was probably 6 years old.

I was 7 when this movie came out and I loved it! I even had the Kida doll they released (though sadly I never got Milo). I used to wear the crystal necklace that came with the doll every time I went to the pool. I really loved the early 2000s movies Disney released, even if they're not the best the company produced. They're just all over the place with the story pitches
There was going to be a tv series based on this movie, but It was cancelled due to the film underperforming at the box office. But they had already completed the first three episodes and didn't want them to go to waste, so they molded them together into a direct to home video and marketed it as the sequel.

It IS worth a watch if you enjoy the characters, creatures/machines and mystic stuff that comes with Atlantis, but you shouldn't go into it with too big of an expectation
(Also it does finally tell us Mole's story that Sweet didn't want us to know XD)

One of the reasons why I love this movie is because there is no music. And tbh, a 5-10 year old would go bananas because I did.
If you do decide to check out the second film, bear in mind that it isn't actually a second movie at all. Instead it is the canceled television series, the few episodes they made smushed together into one thing.

02:20 Wow indeed. This might be the most underappreciated Disney movie, especially considering the effort they put into making it. The production took them 7 years, and they even hired a linguist to invent a whole new constructed language and alphabet for the movie. And 3 years of that just for animating the Leviathan in 3D. The music score composed by James Newton Howard was also amazing. The story writing and characters are very good too - something that children as well as grown ups can enjoy. Too bad the sequel wasn't that great :q

16:30 They can speak their own language (and they do several on occasions in the movie), but they lost the knowledge about the alphabet, so they can't read it. But yeah, that's kind of a stretch, considering that I was able to decode the alphabet just from its examples in the movie (and my Rosetta stone was the title itself). But even without that, I would most likely crack it in a couple of days from statistical analysis of their texts. So it's a bit weird that they were unable to do that for those hundreds of years :q

i think one of the main reasons it suffered was because the marketing was INCREDIBLY VAGUE. like i think they were trying to keep a lot of it a surprise but in doing so we literally knew NOTHING sbout what this was about. if u look at the old trailers for this movie, they dont really tell u anything about it, not enough to become invested. which is ashame because its one of my childhood faves but i remember as a kid seeing the trailers and going "meh" but then my grandma bought it for me a few years later and i LOVED IT once i watched it

I grew up watching barbie movies at the same time as these movies, and this remains my favorite animated Disney film to date XD. This and Treasure Planet. They were so much more exciting than any of the princess stuff, and it made me love Sci-Fi and Adventure genres so much more!

with todays movie technology this would be a perfect live action movie.
I was like 6 or 7 when I first saw this movie. It is still my favorite Disney movie. I remember getting Strep Throat and an Ear Infection at the same time and my mom had me sleep out on the couch. She put in this movie for me and would come every out every other hour to check on me and rewind the movie so I could have something to keep my mind off of the pain. The memory of this is probably a big part of why I love this movie so much. It kills me that Atlantis didn't do well. I would have loved to go on a ride based off of this movie at Disney World or Disney Land.

Like Treasure Planet another all time favorite I grew up with and only appreciated more as I grew but others didn't see it that way, it's almost criminal. The Heart or Crystal is made up of the souls and minds of Atlantians that came before to the very beginning of their culture, essentially gaining the power equivalent to a Deity with the minds of thousands. My guess is with all that knowledge the Crystal probably calculated the best possible outcome to protect its people and help them come back from the brink, hence why it surrendered itself, to give Milo the push he needed to do what was right and save Atlantis. If the Crystal had fought them, lives would have been lost and everyone would have feared or greeded for the Crystals power. By remaining neutral and letting the people fight for themselves without fully relying on its power they were able to reunlock their lost potential and now once again, Atlantis will thrive.

There’s a no.2 of this film but different art style and it looks good
Loved the movie as a kid. Was a bum it didn't end up a hit. Came out when I was a preteen. Was the right age to know some history and mythology and it really sparked a lot of interest and fascination there. The aesthetic was great. The submarine and oher human stuff was really neat cutting edge early 20th century tech. And the Atlantean aesthetic and tech was visually great. A real shame it didn't become a hit. If the adventure disney land based on Jules Vern and steampunk stuff had been a thing this film would've fit in there real well.

this is such an underrated movie and i love it, it's just an epic rather than the usual disney musicals (which i also love). i would honestly like to see a live action with more in depth mythology cause i think it has so much potential story and world building wise!
this movie suffered from a lack of advertisement and promotion, and the second movie wasn't all that great.
Kida said all knowledge was lost during the Great Flood. So my theory is that all the scholars and those who knew the technology perished in the flood because they where on the outskirts of the main city.
Absolutely loved this movie and still do.
