  • Dive into the world of iconic guitar tones with my latest video, where I demonstrate how to get close to David Gilmour's legendary sound using just three affordable pedals.
    Using a Gibson Les Paul Standard, I explore the sonic landscapes made possible by the Mooer E-Lady, Boss DS-1, and Boss DD-3. From silky flange tones to the perfect crunch and spacious echoes, I'll show you how to dial in each setting to recreate the Pink Floyd atmosphere on a budget.
    Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting out, this video is your guide to achieving professional sounds without breaking the bank.
    Everything you hear in the track is played by me and the music was obviously inspired by Pink Floyd, but also by a Norwegian rock band called Airbag. You should definitely check them out!
    Now it's your turn to shine - go do your thing with this awesome tone!

    I’ve been using a Squire Paranormal Jazzmaster XII with big soap bar single coils through a 3rd Man Triple Threat using just the phase shifter and echo into a Fender Blues Deluxe to get a pretty spot on Dark Side of the Moon tone/vibe out of. It’s honestly the first thing I play through every day.

      It’s bit more subtle when placed before the gain pedals and a bit more pronounced when placed after. I like modulation mostly in front except for a leslie.

    • @harounel-poussah6936
      @harounel-poussah6936 3 місяці тому

      The only modulation that works well pre-saturation is the phaser... Best place fot all the space/modulation FX is in the amp's loop or in the mixing console, especially when you use your power section for crunch purposes, this is also why there are wet/dry/wet systems so the dry amp can be cranked without ruining the verb, delay, etc...

    I like this a lot particularly as I already own the distortion and delay pedals. I’ll work on it!

      That’s great and indeed the point of the video. From my perspective , you can use a lot of different pedals and amps and get in the ball park of that great Gilmour tone. No need for very specific or expensive gear!

    I would recommend using a big muff and a overdrive instead of the DS-1

    • @DennisWever
      @DennisWever  3 місяці тому +2

      Well, yes, of course, a Big Muff and overdrive are great options-David Gilmour uses them extensively. However, I've also seen him use a ProCo Rat and other distortion pedals. But that's not really the point for me. What I wanted to demonstrate is that you can achieve a very Gilmouresque sound with a readily available distortion pedal like the DS-1, which almost everyone can get for around 30 bucks.

    • @SomeNiceChips
      @SomeNiceChips 3 місяці тому

      @@DennisWever yeah, that's fair enough, a lot of people have got DS-1, also do you know when he used proco rat because I'm aware of him using one just not sure when though?

    • @DennisWever
      @DennisWever  3 місяці тому

      @@SomeNiceChips I'm sure he used it during the recordings of "The Division Bell," and I believe it was also on his board during the "Pulse" tour. But interestingly, during the '80s, he also used boards with only a Boss HM-2 or a ProCo RAT, in combination with a Boss CS-2, and/or a Boss GE-7, and along with a Boss CE-2 or EHX Electric Mistress for modulation.

      @jackhaugh 3 місяці тому

      @@DennisWeverI have a Chibson that was the primary stage guitar of a prominent local musician in the DC area that I traded a $200 bass for about 10 years ago. It’s got Dimarizio Super Distortion pups in it, and sounds fantastic!
      Whatever company made this guitar had the balls to actually stamp a serial number into the back of the headstock. If you go on the Gibson website, it actually shows up as a black Gibson Les Paul Custom which is what the guitar is supposed to look like. The only and glaring flaw in it is that they used rectangular mother of toilet seat inlays on the fretboard.

      Dave's rig on Pulse costed WAY WAY WAY much more than $10,000, the Peter Cornish pedalboard used by Tim Renwick that Dave had on The Wall/The Final Cut/About Face was likely in the 10 grands range! I was in touch with someone who asked Pete Cornish to put up a pedalboard from his 8 Boss pedals... It was a send your stompboxes and pay €8000...
      You can set up a super-rig even better than Gilmour's for very reasonable price if you're clever and know the gear and how to use it! The only thing he uses you REALLY need is a good Big Muff and 90-95% of Muffs are utter CRAP, even the reissues, BUT, at least for the non-CMS ones, they are very easy to modify, anyone in the DIY community knows what to do!
      Look, the best Stratocaster, the one you dream of is... EXCALIBUR, isn't it? Well, it's not Wayne's dream, Excalibur REALLY exists and existed before the movie, they heard of her but couldn't secure a real one and... It's not a Strat replica, it's more a kind of Super-Strat, in fact, it's an Hyper-Strat... Most of the time, there are DiMarzios onboard and with sets made for people like Shawn Lane, Ron Thal...
      Just go for the Excalibur Supra, it will be your best choice, and mount high end Strat-Styled PUs, in fact, I'd recommand to have hybrid PUs made for you because, today, you can have absolutely wonderful single-coil sized humbuckers fit together with a Strat PU with a magnetic barrage so the ceramic magnet won't ruin the alnico one and... Excaliburs are routed HSH under their pickguards, moreover, there are the Freeway selectors where you replace your 5 posn by a 10 posn, the lever also having an up/down position...
      And the Excalibur has 24 frets so you can play Money's 3rd solo without the unobtainium Bill Lewis guitar.
      An Excalibur Supra costs about the same price as a Strat-Ultra but the quality is higher than the Fender Custom Shop and it has likely the best neck you'll ever touch, they are also way more reactive under the fingers, the neck vibrates in your hand like no other, the reliability is 2nd to none: mine is 31 years old and NEVER needed maintenance...
      The gear I used in a PF tribute band could fit in a small Renault car and took 10 minutes to install with no back pain...
      SKB RLX-6 flightcase moves like a Samsonite! Paid €100 for a 2nd hand one
      - Mesa/Boogie Triaxis 8 channels programmable preamp (€800)
      - Marshall EL84-20/20 (2x20W is way louder than you may think if you chose the right speakers!) (€200)
      - Lexicon MPX-G2 (the real Whammy is in, and thedBx noise gate works great BTW : Lexicon = Digitech = DOD = dBx) (€400)
      - Eventide Eclipse (will also do a lot of stuff Gilmour doesn't uses) (€800)
      - Sound Sculpture Switchblade GL (€1200)
      - 1U rack using many Alpha 9mm pots on the front plate : how to play Tetris with stompboxes circuits : there is room for 3 layers of PCB in such rack enclosures and you can stuff more than 100 Alpha 9mm on the front plate, as well as mini-switches, leds... Most of what you need can be obtained as boutique-quality kits for very cheap, Musikding has 'em all...
      - 2x Electrovoice TL806 (strict blueprints) made of 18mm thick 13 layers, Baltic birch plywood, used snakeskin Tolex and heavy duty metal speakers protection, as well as rollers : the Electrovoice EVM12L is a very heavy and very expensive speaker but, when you know how to use it (post preamp EQ like on Mesas, and the Dynamic Voice in the Triaxis IS the Mesa EQ in presets), well, when EV calls it the best guitar speaker in the world, it's no BS !!!! A single one does better than a 4x12" in diffusion, is as loud as a 4x12" with Greenbacks and sounds way way more accurate... If I use my 2x100W Marshall, I don't need to be miked in the PA in a 1000-1500 seats venue with only a pair of these ! The 2x20W is TOO LOUD for a 250 ppl club and you'll hear yourself perfectly everywhere on a rather large stage. Note : I bought my EVs from people who didn't knew what they were selling! Most of the time, when used in Mesa combos/cabs, these were sold as OEM without markings and if the user is too dumb to use an EQ , these will sound great in clean sound and boxy in distortion so the dude who bought the old Mesas with EVM12L more than often stupidly dumped 'em for cheaper than dirt !!! I own four EVM12L and paid an average €90 per speaker...
      Note that Harley Benton now makes quality Thiele cabinets for €125, but you'll have to wait about 3-5 months for the delivery... No fancy Tolex, no solid metal grills (and you better protect your EVs, believe me! These speakers sell over €500 as new each!
      Such a rig ain't cheap but ain't too expensive : a single HiWatt head is around €3000...
      Now, it requires a little DIY job too but you end with in fact smth better than Gilmour AND you can do a lot lot of other stuff than Pink Floyd, in fact, you can play everything but extreme metal and ultra-vintage 50's/early 60's stuff, both needing highly specialised gear...
