So this turned out to be a pre-curser to the olympic victory. Cool-headed, relaxed and focussed on getting the technical content performed - although there were some questions in my eyes regarding the rotation on the 3loop in the combination. The choreography I found to be solid, but almost to a fault, it movement in transitions were a little 'heavy'. But y'know, that's being rather picky. Overall, a great performance.
4th in LP standings; 3rd overall - Спорт
She was a great competitor, and she did have some nice moments here (great layback, good spiral, and her line and extension were generally pretty). But all of her jumps look cheated and under rotated (the slow motion replay makes this painfully obvious), and both the lutz and flip are from the wrong edges (along with being under rotated). All in all, she was very lucky to compete under the 6.0 system rather than the current system, as many of her jumps would not be ratified at present.

You have a point. The salchow-loop combination was definitely underrotated and the lutz was off the wrong edge. The flip was a little short but it took off from the inside edge, which is correct. But to be fair, a lot of skaters back then didn't have proper technique on the flip and/or the lutz. Sasha Cohen comes to mind. It was only around this time that it was seriously discussed as a technical error, but it wasn't as systematic as it is now. There are quite a few skaters from the past who would have struggled with the current scoring system.
Maria should have beaten Sarah for the bronze here.
Plenty of under-rotations in Sarah's jumps, not to mention cheated entrances. But she did have lovely movements and spins.

What always frustrates me about watching Sarah Hughes is the comments about her cheated and edge qualities and things that weren’t important to the era that she skated in. I always felt Sarah was criminally underscored. Her musicality was amazing for her age. She did the technically hardest program of this competition and it was phenomenal.
What do you know about her skating? She doesn’t cheat and your version of the quality of her skating doesn’t fit her style of figure skating . You are just trying to pick bones about her, which isn’t really nice. And Sarah Hughes doesn’t skate like a little girl does.

@@nathanielharper8701 Yes a lot of the problem is IJS has been in place for almost 20 years now, so people think under IJS thinking, and forget the old scoring system looked at different things. And you can't even for sure say Hughes was lucky since she is mentally tough and determined enough she could have fixed the underrotations and flutz, things like that, if the scoring system were different and punished them more. She played to what the system at the time was. A very consistent and strong skater, and it was great seeing her pull a surprise by winning the Olympics next year.

Sarah was cute, but she was a middle skater who never won any World champion or the National titles.

She won the Olympics gold just because the other better skaters like Michelle and Irina made mistakes.

Her tights coming off her right skate is very distracting and deters from what little line she has.
what little line?? I don't think you know what line means then.
