The only other Marine chapter that I can quickly think of (And I am not going to go looking for some random chapter mentioned once somewhere, or thinking about individual marines who may vary greatly) that actually explicitly concerns itself with this seems to be the Salamanders. And you could maybe possibly say that they have just a bit of an easier time of it. The Lamenters do it despite the fact that they seem to be suffering from some sort of anti-karma where no matter how decent their actions, they will get shat on by the universe. Ironically, they might uphold the legacy of Sanguinius better than the Blood Angels.
YESSS. This was great, and I loved all the little bits of info I never heard of before. And happy to have helped contribute two illustrations cause there just is not enough Lamenters art in the world. CRABB FOREVER.

Once and only once did I ever see someone paint up their marines as Fire Angels, I thought they were wiped out a long time ago anyway so why a dead chapter, I don't know but as you say, for the giggles and shits! 😅
I always liked to think that the reason it took a while for the Lamenters to form a Death Company was that it just took them that long for any one member of the chapter to live long enough to fall to the Black Rage. Suitably grim and tragic for them, and more or less in-line with everything we do know about the chapter since they keep getting nearly wiped out.
@@jakerubino3233 They never meant that Age solely produced the black rage, rather, the older you are, the more battles you have fought thus the more chance the black rage to take hold of you. I started collecting Lamenters specifically because of Wib's rogue trader collection and they're now one of my favourite 40k factions - I massively appreciate you guys for making this video and giving the Lamenters the love they deserve!
I love the Lamenters, especially how their compassion and grief can drive them into a rage on-par with some of the most violent chapters (I mean in the Liberation of Slaughterhouse III their fury was shocking to even Orks)
That's basically what Sanguinius was all about. Compassion and fury. It's kind of funny how they potentially take more after their Primarch than the first founding.
@@goblinrat6119 And yet they also seem furthest apart from their lineage (the couple times the Blood Angels have called upon their successors in a crisis, most notably the Devastation of Baal, the Lamenters were the only chapter that didn't show up)
It wouldn't be a Lamenters video without it too being cursed. Huh, its through this I learned both the Scythes of the Emperor AND the Lamenters were both wiped out by Hive Fleet Kraken. The Scythes are my favorite obscure(ish) chapter and I too have learned to love the pain of painting entirely too much yellow.
18:18 My headcanon is that Cawl made primaris marines from lamenter geneseed, but determined that they would be a waste of primaris space marines, so he gave them all to the Minotaurs.
I picked up 40k after over a decade away. I picked the Lamenters simply because my dice rolls are always bad so now I can call my losses totally canon. Now I just enjoy painting and collecting them. The checkerboard is a good indicator of my progress in painting skill, even just a year into the hobby, there's definitely been an improvement.
To be fair to Ian Watson, if any chapter has a brother named Biff, it'd be the Imperial Fists... :P I always thought it was interesting artistic choice to make them bright yellow, given that they're all about misery and misfortune. Still, I'll always have a soft spot for Space Marine chapters that actually care about people. It's nice to see them fighting to protect humanity because they (presumably) feel some sort of empathy for the downtrodden and defenceless, as opposed to just Alex Jones-ing over the slightest hint of anything alien.
My favourite astro-shooty-lads! Started playing them because I'm genuinely terrible at the game and their lore of 'they always lose, even when they win' just kind of hit home. These days I've got a demi-company of Badab War veterans (all Firstborn with heavy use of mk3+4 parts) and slowly building up the rest out of Primaris. Very neat way to contrast the 'old guard' and the post-Indomitus recruits.
I've painted one Lamenter. He's the basing detail on my Toxicrene. I am somewhat tempted to get a few squads of old-style (i.e. Horus Heresy) tactical marines, and paint all the different armour and camo schemes from that 1st ed Badab War article. Including in particular the Salamander patterned after real- world salamanders, and the Space Shark with the goofy shark logo on his pauldron.
Oooh, it's my first Codex Compliant since I randomly booted up an old copy of the Space Crusader video game and sat stunned when the music started playing...
So glad to finally have a nice summary of Lamenters fluff, done by the best old 40k researchers on the internet! Your army is looking killer these days.
despite being similar in bad luck, I feel like the Lamenters and the Crimson Fists would not get along form the outset, considering the Crimson Fists have been used by the Adeptus Terra as there enforcers for unruly Space Marine Chapters. But I guess if they get over the initial awkwardness they would become fast friends.
I guess as a person who actually has a whole army of Mantis Warriors I have to chime in...... I would say you should cover them in a video like this, but I think this video covers most of it.
that is great, I love it when people make Warhammer armies of fairly obscure factions - always find that more interesting than when they use the better known ones
So, the Lamenters rebel and, as a punishment, are sent to fight a 100-year crusade; as, opposed to, not rebelling, and spending the next century fighting the enemies of Mankind as normal Space Marines? I wonder if a Lamenter was visiting the Crimson Fists' Fortress Monastery when the Arch-Arsonist of Charadon arrived at Rynn's World. That could explain the malfunctioning missile. It is always great to see Snipe and Wib produce another fun and informative video.
Right now, the Tome Keepers, White Dwarf's personal chapter, are my favorite successor chapter. The Angels Penitent, Necropolis Hawks, Rift Stalkers, Mortifactors, and Black Dragons rank highly too.
It's great to see a codex compliant video in my box 2day. Especially as this is now a mortifacter h8 channel. Tomorrow is Canada Day, where we celebrate not being Mericans by drinking beer, singing patriotic songs & exploding stuff. As you can see, we are very different as our national holiday is 3 days earlier and I had to take a number of courses and certifications to obtain firearms instead of buying them at a kwiki mart. But this video is nearly as good and fills my bitter heart with joy. Keep up the amazing work.
As a Raptors player its always funny seeing really old Badab war material that has us in our horrendous old colour scheme. Also that 1999 list has the Raptors as "unknown founding" whereas today they are a 2nd Founding Raven Guard Successor, which is a pretty major change. Forge World really gave us a glow up
I think that the Lamenters never get back to full Codex strength before they get decimated again, so they aren't losing hundreds of battle-brothers every time it happens.
That Lamenters army paintjob is absolutely gorgeous! A very nice video with good presentation that makes it enjoyable even when one knows their story! :)
Hey! I collected a Fire Angels back in the early '90s and they fought in at least 2 games of 40k back then. Admittedly most were in an alternate "low visibility" grey paint scheme as I discovered how unpleasant it was to paint white armour with early '90s paints while doing the first squad, but they definitely existed and many survive to this day. I was however kind of annoyed to discover that Forge World retconned them to have silver armour, as that would have made painting my army so much easier back in the day.. Your Lamenters look far nicer than my Fire Angels ever did!
I always love it when people do Warhammer armies of factions that are super obscure in-universe, interesting that Forge World have suddenly started giving more attention to them
I just started an Oldhammer Mantis Warrior project... but mostly to make players at the local FLGS go "huh? What chapter is that?" and because the new contrast paint is really nice!
When you're finished with all the classic Codexes, please keep doing deep dives on the OG Chapters from the Rogue Trader days! I thoroughly enjoyed this video about everybody's favourite Space Marines. Actually, a similar deep dive on the Space Wolves would be lovely: another RT Chapter, and of course they are Snipe's favourite.
This is one of those beautiful videos that feels tailored for me. I'm currently making a (very) small Lamenters army for a Badab War event some friends are putting together. I love these boys!
the Lamenters stealing a bunch of prisoners sounds like they've gone from the Crusade fleet set up to Nomad-Predation. the nomad-predation fleet chapters we've gotten lore on, like the Carcharadons, tend to target prisons and similar isolated sites for their recruitment drives. taking the inmates and then running them through extreme versions of the Aspirant trials.
As fate would have it, the same day as I decide to start a lamenters army you guys decide to go into full detail about them 😁 The best chapter! Its always so nice to see your rogue trader era army Wib! Makes me happy 😊
Space marine is a hilarious book. The farting as the plank their way up a chimney and them ‘skating’ in power armour to appear like elder. Made me laugh.
i've been really into the Lamenters recently. there's a mk6 plastic set now, they got rules for 3rd edition, i've been thinking about how to adapt their colour scheme into something that's easier to paint and in the style of the campaign colours and squad camo schemes of the RT era.... there's a lot going for them.
This coverage of successor chapters is seriously awesome snipe and wib! I would love to see both of you cover the Mortifactors chapter, personal and underappreciate favourite :D thanks!
I'm currently painting the marine parts being munched by the tyranid psychophage as a Lamenter. Yes, it's Leviathan and not Kraken, but seemed kinda appropriate.

i painted a Lamenters Dreadnought army for 6th edition, had traded it away and it came back recently - have spotted Wib's across the various videos so looking forward to hitting 10th with them!
The Emperor did not stutter when he ordered the space marines to be a bulwark against the terror. The realms of humanity must be protected, and it is not the job of space marines to determine which are worthy of salvation. Every life must be protected at all costs. When compared to the Lamenters, all other chapters have been negligent in their duty.
Ooooh! Oh! Teacher! Teacher! Mater Lacrimarum probably IS a reference to Argento. Argento was known for a particularly over-the-top style of horror film known as "giallo", which is Italian for yellow!
Chapter badge hack from someone who hates freehand: paint the checks first across the entire pauldron. Then seal this layer of paint and stick an imperial fists transfer in the center. Seal that, paint the symbol white and do the heart. Nicely aligned checks and no painting circles.
"Scumnik, Bigman asks: What is the namenz of the Emp?" 'Emp's namenz is "Bigger-Than-You." Emp's namenz is Death.' From Watson's "Space Marine", when an underhive scum from Necromunda was chosen as a recruit to the Imperial Fists.
I was in a Deathwatch campaign once where we had a Lamenter Assault Marine. His player couldn't make it to a session one week so the reason he wasn't there was that the Lamenter Luck kicked in and some luggage fell off a shelf and knocked him out when he had his helmet off.
Bruvva, the Badab War always felt to me like a 'cooler' Horus Heresy in so many ways. My own favorite boys there are the Executioners, who I've recently learned that their chapter icon - the red shield with 2 axes - was 'poached' from the depictions of the knight Wolfram von Eschenbach, a knight and minstrel/minnesanger, in the famous codex Manesse
Awesome video! I was already putting together a a Deathwatch army using some of the marines of the "Cursed Founding", and I thing that the Cursed Founding would make a pretty good video.

fascinating to see obscure sub-factions that have been a part of 40K lore since the beginning suddenly get so much more attention and more fans playing them
As the proud owner of 2 whole squads of mantis warriors I'm honestly just glad they got a mention. I feel like they and the Lamenters are part of a fairly exclusive club of colour schemes that would never be designed by modern GW but have somehow survived into the current canon.
I have a number of Tactical marines collected on the cheap, that I don't want to incorporate into my existing Fallen force. (I use mostly marines from the Dark Vengeance box, with the raised shoulder symbols. I would rather not freehand them.). I've been wondering what to do with them for a while. At first I thought Salamanders, since I have both a Melta and Flamer marine among the models. But most were painted as Blood Angels, and one even has the blood drop symbol on their backpack. So I've considered either painting them as Blood Angels or Flesh Tearers. But this gives me another possibility: Lamenters. Like the Salamanders, they're also a chapter that is one of the nicer "violent arm of a fascist theocracy" groups in canon. On the downside, signing up to paint yellow, checkerboards, and red hearts sounds like a real pain. I still haven't decided, and will probably put that project off in favor of expanding my existing armies. But then, I only really need to paint them for a Kill Team, so it wouldn't be a _big_ investment of time...
I had one spare push-fit intercessor that I had no idea what to do with... and now I think I'll paint him up as a Lamenter... just a single guy that got lost and is now fighting alongside my dark angels successor chapter.
I don't know why, but the little throwaway plot of Lamenters confiscating prison inmates immediately made me think that they're recruiting prisoners into their chapter, which would fit the theme of "Downtrodden individuals trying to do the right thing for others despite their foul luck, and derision from others for their past" very well.
It is REALLY interesting seeing the salamanders with no successors and the fists with only 2. and the wolf brothers still existed at the time. i always thought they just made them up as an excuse why they don't have any.
Lamenter: “Brother, I’ve been shot”
Calix: “Yes, but how does that make you feel about your mother?”
Lamenter: 🥺

The realms of humanity must be protected, and it is not the job of space marines to determine which are worthy of salvation. Every life must be protected at all costs. When compared to the Lamenters, all other chapters have been negligent in their duty.
Ooooh! Oh! Teacher! Teacher! Mater Lacrimarum probably IS a reference to Argento. Argento was known for a particularly over-the-top style of horror film known as "giallo", which is Italian for yellow!
That is an excellent point! I did not make the giallo connection. A gold star for you!
I have to say, this channel made me a Lamenters fan before this video. I even made a few custom action figure JoyToy 1:18 Lamenters.
I'll always have a soft spot for the Lamenters for having a 'starring' role in my favourite, brutal 40k short story, The Fall of Malvolion
That long walk for the Fire Angels dunk was excellent I must say.
Chapter badge hack from someone who hates freehand: paint the checks first across the entire pauldron. Then seal this layer of paint and stick an imperial fists transfer in the center. Seal that, paint the symbol white and do the heart. Nicely aligned checks and no painting circles.
"Scumnik, Bigman asks: What is the namenz of the Emp?"
'Emp's namenz is "Bigger-Than-You." Emp's namenz is Death.'
From Watson's "Space Marine", when an underhive scum from Necromunda was chosen as a recruit to the Imperial Fists.
I was in a Deathwatch campaign once where we had a Lamenter Assault Marine. His player couldn't make it to a session one week so the reason he wasn't there was that the Lamenter Luck kicked in and some luggage fell off a shelf and knocked him out when he had his helmet off.
Nice to see snipes looking well and getting her hair back
Definitely here for the needless pedantry.
Also glad to see Snipe doing okay. Best wishes.
I remember reading something about a heroic last stand at Giants Coffin with the Scythes who were keeping tabs on them on their penitent crusade.
I shall complement your Lamenters army once again: it looks amazing, I get an itch to start a Lamenters force each time I see one of your models!
What
Awesome video! I was already putting together a a Deathwatch army using some of the marines of the "Cursed Founding", and I thing that the Cursed Founding would make a pretty good video.
Hey, "Tried to do the right thing and got screwed over for it" Chapter In Yellow(ish) Armour buddies! I personally play the Celestial Lions, who rather than having a spiritual aura of bad luck, simply exist to show what happens when someone who isn't a Space Wolf tries to tangle with the Inquisition. You may know us from the "Ork Snipers" meme.
Badab War chapters are all so cool. I almost went with Mantis Warriors myself, but decided on Sons of Medusa instead.
Those IA: Badab books are some of the BEST Space Marine lore you can get! Absolutely
Good video!
I have now learned the Lamenters' lore, learned to hate the Mortifactors and I'm feeling obliged to paint atleast 1 mantis warrior
Lamenter: Hey can you help xyz?
Mortifier: hmmm, very sus. Show kd or we leave
Lamenter: WHA? PLEASE BE REASONABLE
user has disconnected from your channel
fascinating to see obscure sub-factions that have been a part of 40K lore since the beginning suddenly get so much more attention and more fans playing them
I didn’t know much about Lamenters, but now I love them !
The Lamenters being so depressing that people just run away because of it is hilarious.
I... I kinda, you know, love the dinosaur at 13:45..... I, just, you know, wanted to say that. I really love him...!
Malakim Phoros got mentioned in the new Lamenters short story, giving hope that he still lives
As the proud owner of 2 whole squads of mantis warriors I'm honestly just glad they got a mention. I feel like they and the Lamenters are part of a fairly exclusive club of colour schemes that would never be designed by modern GW but have somehow survived into the current canon.
Tempted to ask for a Mantis Warriors brief now
I have a number of Tactical marines collected on the cheap, that I don't want to incorporate into my existing Fallen force.
I'm just saying, being cursed is an interesting way to describe being capable of routinely accomplishing impossible feats without being wiped out.
Love you guys! Happy to see you make more videos ♡
Good to have along with Arch’s video. Considering his is old and probably misses out on info (been a bit since I watched)
"Nobody makes me bleed my own blood!" - Malakym Phoros
Did you spot the lil Ian Watson? That's very cheeky of you Snipe and Wib.
The Argento/De Quincey thing is in reference to the same thing as a lot of Suspiria especially the Mothers are based on De Quincy’s work!
My favorite minor Space Marine Chapter is the Black Dragons, who are coincidentally also part of the Cursed Founding.
As to the tyranids and Lamenters, this is where I always get confused between them and the Scythes of the Emperor...
Hive Fleet Kraken: "Tassssty, tasssssty sssssad bananasssss."
Lamenters: [inconsolable crying]
It is REALLY interesting seeing the salamanders with no successors and the fists with only 2. and the wolf brothers still existed at the time. i always thought they just made them up as an excuse why they don't have any.
I want to see a story where the Lamenters fight along side the Salamanders. They can share their perspectives of compassion towards humanity.
