I have a very similar setup and they work well ! But I must admit to my only indulgence I put an air conditioning unit in! And with the extractor fan it keeps it really comfortable in summer! Most of my stuff came from eBay for not a lot of outlay! Great video again Roger 👍😎

Thanks for sharing! I recently bought a house with no basement or extra room for a darkroom but it came with a good sized shed in the back yard. Your video answered a lot of my questions on the feasibility of converting the shed to a darkroom.

Sweet. Last darkroom I had was in a pantry closet, barely enough room to turn around inside . . . but it had shelves & a tiny counter, room enough to hold 3 11x14 trays. The air was awful. Next one's in progress and will be just a tad larger.

Thanks. We just bought a house with a two story detached garage. I plan to use the space under the stairs for a darkroom. Power only no plumbing in there. I've got it sorted after watching your video. Thanks.

I have used everything from a bathroom to an outside shed and now a basement. You can make anything work just look at Edward Weston who made some of the best prints using contact prints with a bare lightbulb! You have a great set up here for sure!

What an awesome set up! I am planning to do temporary darkroom work in a shed. A bit of a dilemma here is that the internal walls and ceilings are light in colour (common in most sheds.) I won't be able to paint the walls black or cover them. I think what I'll do is place diffusion material over the safe light to make it extra dim. There could be a fire hazard doing that with a traditional safe light so perhaps I could use something safer like a red LED bike light or something like that and wrap it up with some sort of opaque material. The other thing is many people use bathrooms as darkrooms (which are usually white in general) and they seem satisfied with the results (no mention of fogged prints.)

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  Рік тому

Should be fine with the walls being light.

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Ive had a look at the shed today with the sun out and there are way too many light leaks for my liking. I think I may have to reconsider. Another option is special tents like those plant growth tents but they're pretty pricey.

Very well thought out indeed, it’s a very nice size and I especially like the foam idea. It looks like it’s half way between regular foam and the oasis they use for flowers. It’s very much a place for everything and everything in its place, which works really well, there’s nothing worse than losing an important item in red light. I have the same enlarger timer as you, which is the third I’ve had and it’s by far the best. I like my good old fashioned clockwork one for my chemicals. I've always thought the enlarging onto a wall for your larger prints a fantastic idea. When I finally get a 120 enlarger I think I'll steal that. Is the bubble wrap purely for insulation?
Mine is the spare bedroom which also has my iMac in it. It’s amazing how many little green, blue and red lights I have to turn off. It was certainly a learning curve making it light proof. I was lucky enough to have had a four slot Nova given to me for my chemicals which has its own thermostat and heating built in. Each slot holds about 2 litres of diluted chemicals so I'm extra careful not to cross contaminate them, then they'll last about 6 weeks. I have another four slot holder for washing the prints, so I give my prints a quick wash in the room then take them to the bathroom to give them a more thorough wash.
    A great video, thank you.

Shoot Film Like a Boss Thanks Roger, hope you are too. I have one of these below, I bought it initially for my workshop but I find I use it for everything. It’s a penknife (pocketknife to our friends over the pond) and Stanley knife all in one and it’s very useful indeed. I have a Swiss Army Knife Champ that I keep in my photography bag, but this Rolson is much more useful for craft type situations. It’s also UK legal though I never go out with it, and quite weighty which I like. I never thought I’d be recommending knives but this is a good one.

For RC prints I just use a hair dryer. Just put it on a flat surface and blow on it for a few seconds. Then lift it up, blow on it for another 10 seconds and You’ve got yourself a dry print.

Nice one, dude! Wondered about summer heat, as you mentioned keeping it warm in the winter at first. I did a darkroom session in our bathroom earlier in the year when we had a hot spell. Jeeeeez, that wasn't pleasant! Haha
Surprised you haven't had the electrics plumbed in permanently after 3 years. Do you ever notice the lights flickering at all when your heater comes on? I wouldn't be surprised if you'd be getting some volts drop on the long cable. Plus trip hazards in the garden :p
Anywho, enough of my negative comments! Haha
I'm rather jealous of your permanent darkroom setup and hope I can do similar some day.

You "For when I develop my films"

Yes. When I print large the fixer can get a bit strong. I keep it bottled until I fix, then bottle it back. In which case I open the door just after fix. I must really get an extractor.

  • @firstlast1406

Is lack of vent ever an issue? I've been considering a similar setup but I am concerned about air flow. I've had many a headaches from it in the past working in labs that had good enough ventilation so I'm not too sure about how to go about it.

  • @andreipaul968

So my chemicals are in a plastic box. I take them in and out of the darkroom. They are stored in a dark cupboard and always around 20°. I left my developer in there once in the summer heat and went bad.
