I found this video very reminiscent of what my father did here in England over 25 years ago. He had the very same problem with the Lucas magneto on our Fordson Model 'N' tractor. What my father did was to use the magneto contact points to fire a 12volt coil. that was slung below the magneto bracket. The high tension wire from the coil was fed back into the magneto distributor cap. This was achieved by dad drilling a hole into the distributor cap so as to feed onto the rota-arm. Because our Model 'N' had no other electrics, dad had to sling a small 12volt car battery on the side to the engine (where some 'N's have a tool box). With dad's modification, starting our Model 'N' became one very easy task and showed up just how poor the Lucas magneto really was.

I just picked up a 1936 N that has also had a distributor added. Modifying the mag as your father did is also a great idea.

Boy I am very impressed with your ability to fabricate parts from things that I would throw away I am wondering how many Fordson/Black and Decker drills/ angle drive distributors I have thrown away in my life!!! Carry on Canada 🇨🇦👍🪝🏗 I loved every minute of it 😀
