"IRVING, Texas (AP) - The Boy Scouts of America is changing its name for the first time in its 114-year history and will become Scouting America. It’s a significant shift as the organization emerges from bankruptcy following a flood of sexual abuse claims and seeks to focus on inclusion.
The organization steeped in tradition has made seismic changes after decades of turmoil, from finally allowing gay youth to welcoming girls throughout its ranks. With an eye on increasing flagging membership numbers, the Irving, Texas-based organization announced the name change Tuesday at its annual meeting in Florida.
“In the next 100 years we want any youth in America to feel very, very welcome to come into our programs,” Roger Krone, who took over last fall as president and chief executive officer, said in an interview before the announcement."

In Canada, the name has been 'Scouts Canada' and it's been co-ed for many years. Interestingly, Girl Scouts still exists in Canada as a girl-only organization.

As an Eagle Scout, here is my reply: The Boy Scouts asked me my thoughts YEARS AGO!!! Doesn't matter WHAT my answer was to allowing girls into the Boy Scouts. I don't see a problem with changing the name. That had been part of my answer.
Old people should stop raging and enjoy their lives.
Learning to be a Scout for the US should be a right for all, no matter the gender, religion, or political belief. If done right can give guidance, mentorship, and direction to the youth of today. Otherwise it can and has been a disaster.

30 years ago we had Indian guides at the YMCA . I was a Chief . Boys and girls were both included together. No big deal. The constant outrage is silly.

All they did is change the name
When Scouting movement was originally formed in 1907 there was no segregation, girls just joined as Scouts. By 1909 there were 6000 girls who had joined, so a separate movement was eventually set up which began the segregation of girls and boys into separate scouting groups. So if anything, allowing girls to join the Scouts is how it was in the beginning. Perhaps those right wing Pearl clutchers should spend a few seconds doing some research, but then again, it wouldn't go down very well with the snowflakes who are terrified of everything.

As someone who earned my Eagle in the Boy Scouts, and my sister was a girl scout. The Boy Scouts taught young men how to do basic things that are not taught in schools. My sister learned nothing really from the girl scouts, and she ended up leaving the girl scouts, after some time she kind of joined the boy scouts. I think what the organization is doing is for the best. I look forward to when my niece is old enough to join the scouts, because I know that she'll learn skills and knowledge from the scouts that'll help her when she's an adult.
I'm an Eagle Scout and I've served as a scoutmaster for 12 years. I'm also a religious conservative. I can't understand why conservatives are upset at this. The inclusion of girls and the name change to Scouting America were VERY GOOD changes. We need to get more people, boys and girls, off the Nintendos and the woods. They need to learn how to care for the US flag and what it represents. Opening it up to girls is helping to spread conservative values to more young people.
The Girls Scouts of America is a good organization but, imho, the BSA has a lot of things that make it more appealing. It's more focused on the outdoors (we go camping much more often than Girl Scouts). It has the Eagle Scout award, which has more recognition and gravitas than the Girl Scout Gold award. I also like that I don't have to take my son to one place on one night and my daughters to another place on another night.
As a left leaning Eagle Scout the simple fact is the Exploring programs (Split in 1998 to Learning For Life and Venturing) of the BSA has been Co-Ed since 1969-71 when Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls were allowed to join. The fact they're getting all pissed off shows how ignorant they are to the BSA's history and the fact that something like this would fully happen eventually.

Edit: PS. At present far more girls now are joining the scouts in the UK, 2.5 girls to every boy. Personally I'll be impressed when trans girls and boys are made welcome as well as non-binary young people.

When I was a kid there wasn't a girl scout troop in my area. So I joined Campfire. I got to do arts and crafts every week. It was lame. My younger brother got to do Boy Scouts and he did all sorts of awesome things like camping in igloos and rock climbing. This is awesome. Including more kids will only make things better.

As an Eagle scout, I thought they'd done this a decade ago. Didn't care then, don't care now.

I did scouts like 20 years ago in Australia. it was called scouts, we had girls in the troop. they still had a separate girls only org called "girl guides" or something, but i've always known scouting to be mixed gender.

In my youth, I was a Girl Scout, and we did silly things, not really life saving skills, so I think this is a good thing to combine the two, and teach everyone those skills!!!!
It's not just to stay the same. They really specifically do not want the boys and girls to understand each other. It would lead to equality... eventually... maybe.
John, it won't be the same. Boy Scouts learned the art of fire building, shelter building, tracking game animals, archery, fishing, using camp tools safely, etc., for when they get lost in the wilderness. Girl Scouts, on the other hand, learned how to tie an apron, turn on the stove and oven, select and grease the correct pans, mix ingredients, and clean up afterwards, because everyone knows they don't need all those "boy" lessons, cause girls never get lost. Ever driven anywhere with one in the passenger seat? "Left, left, left, no, it was left back there. If you won't listen to me, just stop and ask for directions, they'll tell you". And usually they do, and she was right, now I'm gonna hear about it all the way to the falls. (sigh), But hey, I got my bow on my shoulder, got my arrows to, and I ain't even lost yet!
Besides, I think boys should have to learn to cook and do housework as well. An all inclusive 'American Scouts'. of boys and girls, regardless of race, religion sexual orientation, color, gender, in fact, the whole nation is stronger if we all know how to survive outside our homes and grocery stores. Go girl, and I'm coming with you so I don't get lost out here.

I agree, see my post here. GSA was no good in the 70s that's for sure. The 1 time we camped we were in wooden shelters, not allowed NEAR the fire, and some prissy suburban mother ruined our meal by putting a coating of bar soap on the bottom of the pot the had over the fire. Soap soup is what we called it. I quit at age 8.
@@micmic7814 Scouting in Canada made the change in 1976, and the world didn't come to an end. My daughter's best friend in high school was a young woman who was a leader in Scouts. She's super outdoorsy, and is now an accomplished scuba diver and early-career marine biologist. The opportunities are still there, regardless of the name change.

My daughter, now 40 always wanted to join the Boy Scouts instead of Girl Scouts because she wanted to do the activities that the Boy Scouts did. She tried brownies but it wasn’t for her.

My father was a fireman and they have a credit union that used to be called the FIremen Credit Union. They changed it to just Fire Credit Union. What is the big deal. This of course happened several decades ago before everything was so controversial and politically motivated. Makes you wonder if they just can't handle change and just want things to be status quo
It's also because financial organizations want a larger customer base and don't want people to think it's only for firemen.
At one time there was talk of the two scouting organization merging due to lower membership. I think it is great to allow anyone the chance to take part of what activities they want to and also anyone can be an Eagle Scout.
I was a Den Leader in the Boy Scouts. They accepted Women Leaders, but not girls. It never made sense.
I, a male, was a Girl Scout from the age of 6 (first grade) to 10 (5th grade) years old. It was a sub-troop of little brothers of all the girls. Mostly it was just finding ways to stay busy, like taking all the warning flags off of the poison ivy at day camp.
There aren't any Den Leaders in the Boy Scouts. That's a Cub Scout thing.

Scouting has been coed for decades. Explorers, Sea Scouts, Venturing. The Scout program has been coed since 2019. The name just reflects reality.
As an Eagle Scout, I have to process this a bit. BSA was an important anagram for me just as I have always respected the explorers clubs and my friends in the GSA.
My son was assaulted and called racist names at our local troop at summer camp last year. The dad of the kid who did it witnessed it and said nothing even though he was a mandatory reporter. They put us off for several months while they ‘investigated’, only to come back and say they believed the other kid and his dad, as well as the scoutmaster who inserted himself as a witness during the process. What a joke. I would have thought they would have learned with all the abuse they’ve had there, but apparently not.
Girl Scouts sell expensive cookies. Boy Scouts sell expensive popcorn in a collectable tin. Now it will be Scouting America selling expensive popcorn. There. Solved it

Fifty years ago, the Boy and Girl Scouts used to divide activities more strictly along traditional gender roles. Girl Scouts, for example, were taught “good grooming,” and how to use a sewing machine. Boy Scouts learned woodworking and camping skills.
It is clear no Americans, or at least, no right wing Americans, have the slightest idea about this change which has been going on for years. Decades. I am a Scout Leader in Britain and we've had girls in the Scout Association for at least a generation and I wouldn't have it any other way. It would seem the Girl Guides (Girl Scouts) haven't suffered much, if at all and the "Boy Scouts" have gone on in leapos and bounds. I certainly wouldn't go back.
About twenty years ago, our District had a 'Summer Camp' in, I want to say Pennsylvania and they ran in to a bit of American idiocy. Of course, they had girls with them as part of 'The Scouts' and yet the Boy Scouts of America had completely ignored the fact and threw a wobbly when they realised the girls were expected to camp on the same site! Eventually some solution was worked out, but then some random geezer turns up, asking for the British Contingent Leader. Our Roy put his hand up and said; "That's me" and was promptly handed a Subpoena to appear before a local Grand Jury! Apparently a bunch of parents - of girls - were suing BSA for discrimination because their daughters wanted to join. Roy reported this to our Headquarters and the British Embassy. Our HQ were unsure what to do, but the British Embassy went bonkers! They would only allow our contingent leader to answer his name, his relevant position and did the party include girls and the Grand Jury had to meet and take his statement before our contingent went home. This was more than twenty years ago!
The move to accepting girls in the BSA was blatant and entirely justified EXTORTION on behalf of the World Council of Scouting. They said, in effect, that if the BSA wanted to host the World Jamboree in America in 2019, then a concrete plan for admitting girls MUST BE put in place. The BSA blagged their way round it by saying girls could join the Cub Scouts (Webelows?) which was accepted. The BSA had literally zero idea of what they were setting in train and it must have hit them like a freight train (I'm glad to say.) All those right wing arseholes on Fox need to learn something about young people and the way they work together. Go Scouts of America.
Of course we're aware of it. That's yet another reason we find it so repellent. They've insisted on allowing girls, and have been doing so for years. But-surprise-that's not enough. So they have to push more ADDITIONAL lunacy...it never ends with these people...they will never be sated til there's nothing remaining of normalcy...and the saddest part is, the people who know better stood by and ALLOWED it, through sheer cowardice...

The first boy I kissed and who kissed me as well was in Scouts in a tent on a camp out. (heheheeee camp OUT everyone!) That was in 1972. Everyone should be able to contribute and join in. EVERYONE!

Boy Scouts wasn't a big thing in my youth since we lived out in the boonies already, but I did join for a couple weeks till I got a job. I don't think having girls included would have been a negative. It wasn't a negative in the Army, Navy, or Marines, at least not for me. I guess if you're worried about being shown up by a girl......

So Boy Scouts will be Scouts and Girl Scouts will exist for Girl Scouts. Why not combine the two? Values will be available to both, camping, wildlife discovery, Jamborees, etc.

Scouting had begun this change a long time ago. Just ask scouting officials who no longer enjoy the support of the Mormon church when girls first started being allowed to join. Scouting is very traditional in its goals. Just read the scout oath, scout motto, and scout law. Its not perfect, but for many, it's a way to try to live by some standards.

Did those two guys at the beginning join the Boy Scouts? Long ago when I started in the Boy Scouts at Jr. high school age, there was a skill that I didn't pick up which I wish I had. That would be picking-up girls.
The message is segregate.
Dividing people by whatever chosen characteristic helps sell product. Color, class, gender, religion, place of birth... Segregate and sell.
